PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The extraordinary events of last season has been a hard lesson for the Board of Management and reinforces that no matter the experience you might have and the trust you place in individuals to operate within an agreed set of guidelines, in an essentially amateur sport we are exposed when the intent of operating in a spirit of good faith is seriously challenged. However with the good will of all our members, both playing & non-playing we worked through a period of tension and uncertainty and got ourselves back to thinking about our core operation of playing the sport we all love – Cricket. I am personally indebted to Dave McClean for filling the breach and taking on a caretaker coaching role and coordinating the season, Bruce Waldron for the professional manner in which he supported Dave, and the players who took on the 1st XI Captaincy, Jayde Herrick and Michael McClean for the most part.

Having teams competing for finals spots, supports the strong view that we continue to develop talented players in creating depth for our Club, also providing career pathways to the very elite levels of our sport. It has been a strength of our Club and will continue to be a focus going forward.

Governance Again we struggled to achieve a surplus, while this has minimal impact on our day to day operations, it does not allow for forward planning of preferred projects and facility improvements. Premier Cricket is an ongoing challenge to fund appropriately and many Clubs at this level are finding it difficult to find enough income streams to sustain growth. The expectations of being a regional Club and providing leadership for the sports’ development in our region continue to exceed our ability to service. Coaching and player payments are a growth industry, while some Clubs have lived beyond their means and are now suffering. We would be irresponsible to head down this path, it is therefore extremely important for the sustainability of our Club to “live within our means”, but to develop strategies that considers how we can improve our income streams in the future. I reiterate my comments from previous reports that rather than carry a significant surplus the decision to responsibly invest in our future players via the assembled coaches is a direction the Board is strongly committed too. However with operational overheads continuing to increase and other income streams stabilising there may need to be a review of the extent to which the Board commit to this policy going forward. I acknowledge and thank the dedicated group that forms the Board of Management, we have had stable, pro active and supportive Board that continues to provide leadership through innovation, forward planning, as well as strategic vision that will ensure our Club continues to provide a regional pathway to first class cricket. I commend the efforts of our home bred General Manager Glenn Davey for his due diligence across our governance operations, putting in many hours above and beyond expectations. Cricket Victoria The challenges for the sport of Cricket are ongoing, particularly in areas such as, participation, ground availability, and ongoing volunteer involvement. Twenty20 is seen as the catalyst and the spark for introducing cricket to a whole new generation. It is considered imperative to the games future for holding ground in the sporting market place. The success and continued growth of the BBL competition reinforces Cricket’s place on the summer calendar.

Volunteers The reduction in the amount of available volunteers is concerning all Premier Clubs. Building a pool of people has now become imperative to how we support our teams through a season, sharing the load to minimise the commitment is a direction the Club will have to take. I particularly acknowledge and thank all who took on the mighty challenge of managing the canteen operations, ensuring we stayed at the top of the ladder for service provision to our loyal group of supporters and visitors. The canteen operations achieved a good turnover, driven by Mary Coleman’s astute management skills and dedicated work ethic. However the future sustainability of the canteen will depend on further volunteer resources assisting throughout the season. A special thank you also to the dynamic Thursday night meals team led by Karen Voelkl, Sarah Walker, and Noellene McClean with an able supporting group providing a variety of meals for our enjoyment each selection night. This is a great tradition and appreciated by all. Congratulations to Dave McClean on being acknowledged as the best club person for 2013/14. Dave has been a wonderful contributor to the Club over many years and taken many different tasks along the way, well deserved. Another season of the “Heat in the Kitchen” luncheons was successfully driven by Mark Dunsford, even though the fixture didn’t best suit us this season. David Schwarz, Bryce McGain and Terry Daniher were all very informative and entertaining guest speakers. I again thank Mark for his efforts in establishing a significant supporter data base and a successful series of lunches and outstanding guest speakers. Local Government Butler Oval has under gone major improvements during the post season with complete drainage being installed and both the centre and practice wicket tables being refurbished after the completion of the season. I acknowledge the commitment of Council Officers and their support for the improvement works that will benefit us greatly. Sponsorship Thank you to our major sponsor BUILDSAFE, Phil Graf and his team are fantastic supporters of our Club over a long period; we express the Board’s gratitude for his continued support. The Frankston RSL, have also been long term partners supporting our Club over our journey. Mark Dunsford from Dunsford Financial Planning, Martin Scanlon from Rail Signalling Services, Jacinta Broatch from NAB Karingal and Chris Hall from Saxon Sports Frankston are all special sponsor partners and we appreciate their ongoing involvement. To all our players, loyal volunteers, members and sponsors I particularly, on behalf of the Board, wish to thank you for your continued support throughout the seasons. Your support is the very foundation from which we can better prepare to take on the challenges ahead that will make us a successful and sustainable Premier Cricket Club. Pathways Accepting our responsibility as a Premier Club in the region and the development and support of pathway squads is vitally important to our sustainability in Premier cricket. The strength of our ongoing partnership with local associations is imperative with support from Cricket Victoria and the Regional Cricket Manager, Jason Mathers, ensures a well coordinated program for young aspiring cricketers to reach their potential. To the entire pathway support groups, coaches, managers and scorers’ thank you for providing much needed support and direction. I also acknowledge the role that many parents play providing background support, guidance and for the manner in which many have embraced the “Heat” as their Club.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 5 Annual Report 2013-2014

General maNagER’S REPORT

It is with pleasure that I submit Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club’s Annual Report for Season 2013/2014. The process of compiling the Annual Report provides a great opportunity to assemble a detailed record of the achievements and records of the club from the recent season. Personally, I have completed my third year in this role, being able to contribute to the operations of the club in many different aspects. I continued to boost our social media and online profile over the last season, trying to further enhance our exposure to the community. The design and implementation of a new and much needed merchandise range was very draining and drawn out, but worth it in the end when the quality new items were introduced.

Combining this role with full time work and a young family is becoming more of a challenge. A spread of tasks and additional volunteer assistance will go a long way to make this role work. I must commend the valuable contribution from our President, Dennis Prendergast. He puts so much time into our club, managing many key relationships with our important stakeholders. Thank you also to David McClean, who serves the club for many more hours than what is expected in his role. Administration As in previous years, Cricket Victoria provided funds and assistance to enable the Club to manage its administration responsibilities in accordance with Cricket Victoria’s Criteria Assessment for all Premier Cricket Clubs. Cricket Victoria’s support is greatly appreciated. Playing Matthew Chasemore was re-appointed to the role as Senior Coach and 1st XI captain for 2013/2014. Former coaches in Nick Jewell, Peter Buchanan, Shaun Graf and Ian Brayshaw departed the club after 2012/2013. David McClean was reappointed into a Junior Development and Chairman of Selectors role, with highly experienced Bruce Waldron appointed as High Performance Manager. Following a difficult period for the club, David McClean was appointed to the role of Acting Senior Coach from Round 5. Matthew Chasemore moved to St Kilda CC after Round 6, with Jayde Herrick appointed as 1st XI captain. The 1st XI finished the year with two wins, but they were in winning positions in so many other matches – just unable to win the crucial moments. It was a year for gaining experience for the young playing group, with the expectation that they will emerge together as a powerful force in the years to come. In a positive note, six players scored over 350 runs, which helped spread the work load amongst the batsmen. The challenge is now set for these totals to all increase. Jake Wood and Jackson Mockett certainly showed positive signs towards the end of the season, indicating they will be excellent 1st XI fast bowlers for the future. It was a great reward to see so many players selected for higher representative honours. It shows that our Junior Development Programs are generating great results, with our high performing players being noticed and selected. The cost of that is seen at the selection table, where in some rounds, seven positions were made available due to representative fixtures. This presented exciting opportunities for players to move up the grades to get valuable experience. However, this realistically means that victories are harder to achieve. The 2nd XI was certainly again good enough to play finals, but they ended up missing out from 8th spot by 8 points after missing out on some likely victories – namely a reverse outright defeat to Casey South Melbourne after holding a very dominant position in the match. The side shared the captaincy once again, which does have an impact on the consistency of the message being delivered. Kierran Voelkl, Liam Tonkin, Coen Chernishoff and Aidan Wheeler did best with the bat. The bowling workload was shared between Billy Humphrey, Jackson Mockett, Aidan Wheeler, Jake Wood and Peter Sofra. The 3rd XI was well led again by Jason Wylie, who captained the side into the finals after quite a consistent year. They finished seventh and played Dandenong in the first final. After being right on top in the final, a lower order recovery from Dandenong proved to be the difference, with the Heat unable to chase down the total on

Day 2. Kiefer Peries was the stand out player in the team in his first season, and will no doubt have a very successful career. The bowling was led by the economical Blake Hogan-Keogh and Aaron McIlroy, with Mitch & Tim Drummond providing good support to a well rounded bowling attack. Cameron Chasemore captained the young 4th XI side again and they had a very successful and dominant year. After spending much of the season in the Top 4, they finished third and defeated Ringwood in the Quarter Final. Unfortunately they were outplayed in the Semi Final against the eventual premiers. With such a young side finding their way in Premier Cricket, it was always going to be a season of development for this group. However to make a Semi Final, it is safe to say they exceeded expectations and will be looking forward to building on these results next season. Cameron Chasemore, Nathan Harford, James Vela and a late season cameo from Jake Bardwell were the key batting contributors, whist Billy Quigley and Liam Bennett were the stand out bowlers. Arrivals The club secured the addition of the following players to the senior list for Season 2013/2014: Brad Baptist (Hawthorn Monash University), Jamin Barron-Toop (Baden Powell), Liam Bennett (Clyde), Simon Black (Hawthorn Monash University), Jake Brown (Carlton), Michael De Iacovo (Darwin), Jarratt Eastburn (North Melbourne), Ben Frith (Heatherhill), Jayde Herrick (returning to FPCC from Casey South Melbourne), Nick Mann (Somerville), Michael McClean (returning to FPCC from Camberwell Magpies), Brad McDonald (returning to FPCC), Aaron McIlroy (Myrtleford), Kiefer Peries (Clyde), Nick Taranto (Tyabb), Liam Tonkin (Hawthorn Monash University), and Luke Walker (record runscorer returning to FPCC). Departures Players who left the club following the 2012/2013 season included: Tom Baron, Alastair Christy, Matthew Christy, Tyler Cox, Chris Dew, Michael Edwards, Robert Fisher, Sam Frawley, James Freeman, Ben Hillard, Ryan Hillard, Zafar Khan, Matt Lineker, Nathan Martin, James Miller, Regan O’Brien, Andrew Proctor, Joshua Wilcox, and Sean Wilson. Thank you to these players for their service to Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club, in particular to Life Member James Miller who contributed significantly to the 1st XI over many years for 175 1st XI matches before moving to Prahran where he won all senior Prahran awards in his first season along with the Premier Cricket Ryder Medal. All members of FPCC were extremely proud to see James recognized with the highest individual honour in our competition after an outstanding all-round career, whilst at the same time sad that it wasn’t with his home club. Volunteers There are a significant amount of volunteers within the Club who deserve recognition for their contributions. Thanks must go to David McClean (Chairman of Selectors), Ian Boldiston (Training and Matchday Setup), Brian Nankervis (Photographer), Martin Wylie (Team Manager), Ivan Ashkenazi (Team Manager), Adrian Coleman (Team Manager, Scorer), Wayne Ross (Scorer), Matt Davis (Scorer), Glen Elmi (Linemarker, Team Manager), Graeme Brewer (Matchday Assistance, Scorer), Jannine Reid (Scorer), Ethan Lock (Scorer), Nick Salerni (Team Manager), Cameron Chasemore (Team Manager), Jason Wylie (Team Manager), Mary Coleman (Canteen), David Archer (Canteen), James Keenan (Canteen), Karen Voelkl (Meals, Afternoon Tea), Noellene McClean (Meals, Canteen, Afternoon Tea), and Sarah Walker (Meals). Thank you must also go to Gary Woolard, Gavin Bock, Chris Cay and Phil Regos from Frankston City Council from their efforts in maintaining the high standards of the Jubilee Park precinct. Board of Management Finally, recognition should be provided to the hard working FPCC Board of Management which included throughout the year: Dennis Prendergast (President), David Archer (Vice President), James Keenan (Vice President), Glenn Davey (Treasurer), Ivan Ashkenazi (Secretary), Richard Brett, Glen Elmi, Chris McCormick, Karen Voelkl and Jason Wylie. Personally, it has been a pleasure to work with a great team in achieving positive outcomes for the Club.

COaCh’S REPORT

Season 2013/14 was one that will be looked back on with different feelings by everyone at the club, losing senior players is always going to set a clubs progress back and that is a fact. It’s a natural progression that we turn over players and you accept that and get on with the job. I feel it took us a few weeks to brush ourselves off, pick ourselves up and get on with playing cricket. As a club I think we can all be proud of our efforts to do so. I have always believed its easy to hide behind great players but you really learn where you are at when you are fully exposed and out there on your own. We learned some hard lessons along the way but players responded and took on everything that we threw at them.

Our results in the 1st XI were below where they should be and I expect a vast improvement in the coming season. Having said that we did put ourselves in winning positons on several occassions only to let key moments come and go. The 2nd XI once again just missed finals after putting themselves into a good position to make it, they will look back on the season and be hungrier to correct that result. The 3rd XI made the finals after a steady season but were knocked out in the first week. The 4th XI also made finals and went to the second week and fell just short of making a grand final, they all can be very proud of their efforts. There were positives that came out of the season and they were all noted at presentation night and that’s where they should be celebrated. We know we had a lot of Victorian and Australian reps and this impacted heavily on us at the selection table, but would we want to change it? Absolutely not. What it does is give others an opportunity to play in a grade higher than they normally would at that time of their development. We can’t and won’t accept the results that were achieved last year, we can’t and won’t think that we can’t improve. We have heard it all before, the little things are the big things, get fitter, be mentally tougher, learn from our mistakes and make the adjustments needed to become a better player. I can guarantee you that you will hear them over and over again until we get it right. No longer is it acceptable to put on a FPCC shirt and cap and not accept the responsibility that goes with it. We are the guardians of this club for the future generations. I would like to finish by thanking all the captains who filled those rolls throughout the year, to all of our fantastic volunteers, to all of the board members and to Dennis and Glenn, thankyou just does not seem enough lads.

DIRECTOR OF COACHING

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 8 Annual Report 2013-2014

Finance

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club realised an audited net loss of ($522) for Season 2013/2014 compared to a net profit of $2,283 in Season 2012/2013. This is a reduction of $2,805. The financial information is based on accrual accounting, is exclusive of GST, and includes non-cash transactions such as depreciation and adjustments. To expand, $14,525 of the listed income was still receivable at 30 April 2014, while $13,587 of the listed expenditure was still payable at 30 April 2014. When non cash accounting items (depreciation and inventory adjustments) are disregarded, the actual Operating Profit sits at $2,094. The following explanations are provided for clarification of the result in some areas.

Income: Cricket Victoria As per other seasons, assistance from Cricket Victoria in the form of Distributions, Internet Grant, and Administration Manager Grants is greatly appreciated. Cricket Victoria also assisted in reimbursing costs incurred to host Country Week matches. In respect to the loan with Cricket Victoria for their contribution to the electronic scoreboard, the first four repayments ($20,000 combined) have been made, to reduce the outstanding balance from $35,000 to $15,000. This commitment of $5,000 per year over the next three years is something the Board will carefully continue to plan and budget for. Bar, Canteen and Selection Night Meals. Thanks to the amazing leadership and management of Mary Coleman, the results of the Canteen were again at good levels. The revenue received in the canteen was sufficient to allow sandwiches, rolls, cakes and cordial to be provided for player afternoon teas free of charge. Karen Voelkl also did an amazing job with the Selection Night Meals, making a profit for the club of $1,330. The bar sales reduced by $8,883 (total decrease of $18,606 since 2011/12) which is a dramatic fall, mainly caused by less external functions held at the club rooms. The reduction in bar sales is obviously compensated by the purchase of less bar stock. A strategy looking at increasing the amount of external bookings will take place for next season, such as reducing the facility hire fee to just $100. Membership We again thank the playing group considerably for their strong support of their club through the current membership structure, first implemented at the 2009 AGM. I encourage supporters to strongly consider becoming a social member to further support your Club financially. In a positive note, social members increased from 16 to 26. Playing memberships will increase to $450 for the upcoming season in recognition of the increased cost of Cricket Operations. Social During Season 2013/2014, the Club continued “Heat in the Kitchen”, a series of luncheons which included fine dining, guest speakers and the opportunity to reminisce with past and present friends and family. Though organised very well by Mark Dunsford, these luncheons proved to make a loss of $132 due to reduced attendances. Even though a loss was incurred, the events still provide a valuable opportunity to entertain our sponsors and members. The $5,000 Draw was successfully operated again by Jason Wylie to conclude the season. This was very well supported by players and members, seeing a profit of $2,679 returned to the club, a fine reward after such hard work. The 20 Year Celebration Dinner was an excellent night to reunite with past and present players and members at the Frankston RSL, and it also generated a profit of $2,229. The annual T20 match against the MPCA also generated funds through canteen sales, bar sales and the luncheon.

Page 9: FRANKSTON PENINSULA CRICKET CLUB · 2014. 7. 29. · Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 2 Annual Report 2013-2014 BOARD OF MANAGEMENT 2013~2014 President Dennis Prendergast Vice Presidents

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 9 Annual Report 2013-2014

Sponsorship We are grateful to continue to receive wonderful support from our sponsors, in particular Buildsafe Building Insurances (Phil Graf), Frankston RSL (Rob Morrison), Dunsford Financial Planning (Mark Dunsford), Saxon Sports Frankston (Chris Hall), National Australia Bank (Jacinta Broatch), Reddy Roasts Frankston (Daniel Watts), Graham Quarries (Chris Hutchinson) and C&S Lightweight (Tony Stocker). Thank you to Mark Dunsford who plays a key role on behalf of the club in generating and maintaining positive relationships with new and existing sponsors.

Expenditure: Facility As expected with the quality of facility the Club has access to, there is a considerable amount of expenditure to maintain its presentation and operations such as cleaning costs of $2,368 and materials & repairs of $2,801. Following the renogtiated energy deal signed with Blue NRG, the club has further reduced our energy costs to now be $7,972 for last season. Grounds Ground rental fees payable to the Frankston City Council for the A.H. Butler Oval and Eastern Oval increased slightly to $9,428. Our Ground related expenditure included purchasing paint for the linemarker, along with the purchase of new hessian covers which were needed, and the repair of a number of covers for our new curator to reutilize them. Merchandise $8,068 worth of current merchandise purchases remains on hand to be sold. The Board implemented a new range of clothing designs by Kukri in the 2013/2014 season. This transition saw the merchandise expenditure and in turn merchandise sales dramatically increase as all players obtained a new range of apparel. Playing The Club restructured the coaching model for 2013/14, resulting in a net reduction in coaching costs by $5,123. Other playing costs also included umpiring and scoring fees, where umpiring costs increased by $2,520. Further, indoor practice, facility hire and cricket equipment costs (such as match balls, training balls, ice and training aides) combined to $21,136 to outline the significant investment by the club in playing resources. Travel and Accommodation costs related to the Bush Bash T20 fixtures in Swan Hill, which were reimbursed by Cricket Victoria.

Summary: The Club finances remain very delicately balanced, with the usual annual process of entering into overdraft occurring again in the lead up to Season 2014/2015. The Board will continue to conservatively manage the finances, and look to reassess our investment in some areas in order to ease the financial pressure regularly experienced each winter. The downward trends in sponsorship, bar sales, canteen sales and facility hire are extremely concerning. This indicates the ability to earn club income and restore a surplus is becoming evermore difficult.

THOMPSON MEDAL - BILLY QUIGLEY

An exciting moment of the Presentation Night saw young 4th XI player – Billy Quigley – be awarded with the Thompson Medal. A popular winner of the medal, Quigley had a very consistent season to take home the medal based on a 3-2-1 voting format in each match of all four grades. Quigley polled votes in 11 of 17 home and away matches, indicating how steady his season was. He played the majority of the season in the 4th XI, including the Quarter Final and Semi Final. He received promotion to the 3rd XI for two Twenty20 matches, where he took 4/25 against Carlton. Overall in his 19 matches, Quigley scored 227 runs from 15 innings, at an average of 18.90 with a highest score of 50* in Round 8 vs Dandenong. With the ball, he collected 29 wickets at a low average of 14.90, with his best figures 5/44. The vote count was extremely exciting with Quigley collecting two votes in the final match of the season against Essendon to snatch victory by one vote from Luke Walker and Will Crowder. In that match he collected 1/15 off 11 overs and scored 21* on a tough pitch. As seen from the photo below, the room errupted when the two votes

were read out, and Quigley was mobbed by excited team mates to celebrate. He is a very worthy recipient of the award, and will look to further progress his Premier Cricket career next season. The Thompson Medal is voted upon by the captains of each grade following every round. Amazingly, they were able to recognize 50 separate FPCC players throughout the season’s voting.

CLUB Awards

Donald Cameron Memorial Under 21 Award

- BEN ASHKENAZI

This award was kindly sponsored by National Australia Bank (Karingal Branch) for the third time in Season 2013-14. The award recognizes the most outstanding Under 21 leader within the club in honour of a past player from Frankston Cricket Club who tragically lost their life at a young age. Ben Ashkenazi was recognised for stepping through the grades, starting in the 4th XI in 2009 to now be a regular 1st XI player. Ashkenazi has achieved so much in the last two seasons to establish himself as one of the most promising fast bowlers in the state. After dominating the 2012/13 and 2013/14 Under 19 National Championships for Victoria, Ashkenazi received selection to play in the Under 19 World Cup for Australia, along with the final match of the Futures League Season with Victoria. He has been duely rewarded with a Victorian Rookie Contract for 2014/15.

Wills Best Club Person

Award

- DAVID McCLEAN

David McClean has been recognized as the Best Clubman for Season 2013-14, receiving the Bill & Nance Wills Award. David is a long serving member of the club, holding a Junior Development role for over a decade. David has had an influence in recruiting the majority of the current playing list, along side his long standing former role as coach of the South East Country Sharks Under 18 Pathways side. David has also stepped up in recent seasons to take on the vacant Chairman of Selectors role, and handled a very delicate situation to become Acting Senior Coach in 2013/14 to ensure the club could push forward.

Junior development

Once again, the Club was at the forefront of Cricket Victoria’s Pathways Program in respect of the South East Country Region. In August, the Club hosted the Regional Pathways Information Session and again it was standing room only with around 200 (prospective players and their parents) in attendance. Jayde Herrick was a very informative guest speaker. From September until the end of December, the Club provided training facilities for each of the Squads to utilize.

Under 14’s The Under 14 Squad was coached and managed by Peter Hall and Dane Harkin and included: Riley Bowman, Max Cairns, Lachlan Curtis, Jaxon Dooley, Jack Field, Sam Fletcher, Joshua Goudge, Tanay Katarey, Chad McDonald, Ben Proctor, Patrick Rowe, Sam Sturt, and Daniel Vela. The Under 14’s only saw victory in one of their four matches. Lachlan Curtis and Sam Fletcher led the way with the bat, and Lachlan Curtis and Max Cairns enjoyed success with the ball.

The squad comprised of: Alex Cann, Louis Gillies, Jack Greenwood, Matthew Herbert, Tom La Brooy, Brody Pearse, Kiefer Peries, Andrew Proctor, Mitchell Rowe, Zac Stevenson, Nick Taranto, Gordon Waterfall and Jake Wood. It was an extremely hot week for the carnival with Day 3 & 4 starting earlier and restricted to 35 overs per side to combat the effects of the heat. The Sharks lost the first three games, before winning their final match. It was quite a turn around in fortunes after dominating the competition in 2012/13. The side was missing fast bowlers Adam McMaster and Jackson Mockett due to Victorian Under 17 duties, and Victorian Under 19 bowler Jake Wood had limited availability due to injury. Gordon Waterfall led the way with 88 runs and 8 wickets. Tom La Brooy (74 runs and 3 wickets), Kiefer Peries (60 runs) and Louis Gillies (6 wickets) also had good contributions.

RETIREMENT – DAVID NANKERVIS By Andrew Groves, Premier Cricket Website, 6 March 2014 Andrew Groves caught up with Heat retiree David Nankervis who reflected on a distinguished Premier career. When the bails have been flicked off for the final time for David Nankervis on Saturday he will leave the field with a heavy heart. The one-club man made the difficult decision to hang up his gloves at the end of the Heat's fixture against Essendon last week. The keeper, who joined the CV 200 Club last season, has enjoyed a decorated career, but has decided for now enough is enough. “I’m a bit emotional about the whole thing, but I’ve put that in the back of the mind for another week or so," he said. “But all good things have to come to an end.” Nankervis made his debut in the 1998-99 season and will finish on 210 matches, scoring over 2500 runs and snaring 388 dismissals (353 caught, 35 stumped) although he'll be looking to add a few more victims to that list on Saturday. In his 16 years at the Heat he has experienced the highs and the lows Premier Cricket has had to offer. “Playing my first game in the ones is something I still remember,” he said when reflecting on his career highlights. “When I first came to the club I started in the Third XI and remember seeing the Firsts play on the main oval. Brad Glenn back then was the wicketkeeper, I thought that was the best thing ever. “Later I got to play my first game, then a dozen years later I played my 200th. Another highlight for sure was playing finals. “We’ve had a number of finals series in the firsts, and I’ve been lucky enough to make two Grand Finals, which unfortunately we lost both. “One of the Grand Finals was the epic one against Dandenong when they pretty much had a Test line-up with Siddle and Pattinson which we just lost. It would have been nice to win one of them, but it remains a great memory. “Playing my 200th game was also a big moment last season for the Firsts, I will remember and cherish that forever too. Not forgetting all the other great wins and team performances a long the way, coming from behind to win and the reverse outrights, lots of great memories there." After so many years spent at the Heat, it is understandable Nankervis will miss the excitement of pulling on the whites or colours on a Saturday morning. “I think the facilities down there are second to none,” he continued. “But most of all it’s going to be the mateship and camaraderie. I’ve been there now for near on 15-16 years, so it has been like a second home to me. “You spend a couple of days a week down there and the players coming through you develop lifelong friendships with them, be it through weddings or hanging out with each other. “I’ll probably miss that the most. Going out on a Saturday morning and spending the day with them and going into battle with the boys. “I think I’ve been very lucky where I’ve played with the best groups of guys, facilities and volunteers that run the place. The whole club has been fantastic with me and that’s why it was such a hard decision to leave after such a long service. “I’ve been a one-club player in that time. It’s been a fair journey, the support you receive from the hierarchy is something I will miss, from the President down. The club does things really well with its governance. “Seeing the younger guys come through has been enjoyable too. “Some are playing Vic U17s, U19s and Benny Ashkenazi has been doing well with the Australian U-19s, Scott Boland has gone on to play state, Jayde Herrick started off with us and went on to play state and Big Bash, Jon Holland and Matty Mott too, so there’s been a lot of development." For now, the future is all about resting his aching limbs.

Heat celebrate 20 years of cricket

By Simon McEvoy, Frankston Standard Leader, 28 October 2013

WHEN big Paul Wilson charged in to deliver the first ball in Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club's history

on October 2, 1993, two humble men shook hands and shared a special moment. Dennis

Prendergast and Bill Foley had worked tirelessly for years preceding the big day to see their dream

come true. Frankston finally had its own District cricket club. "I stood next to Bill and we shook

hands as the first ball was being bowled and I said, 'Well, here we go'," Prendergast, who has served

as Frankston Peninsula's president in 14 of its 20 seasons, said. "It was just a special moment

because we'd been so involved. We just looked at each other and without saying anything else we

just said, 'Ah well, here we go'. It was just a nice moment that I personally recall. "It was almost a

relief."

Foley, who gave so much to cricket in Frankston and on the Mornington Peninsula, died in 2007. But

his legacy lives on. The Heat continues to give young cricketers an opportunity to play at a high level.

Prendergast said the birth of Frankston Peninsula in 1993 "just didn't happen overnight". Planning

began in 1988. "From the report that recommended that the Geelong and Mornington Peninsula

regions be entered in I think it took us five years to walk out on to the ground," he said. "Bill Foley

and I put together submissions to councils for upgrades to grounds. We got knocked back two or

three times by Cricket Victoria delegates. "Bill used to burn the midnight oil writing reports and then

faxing them to me the next morning and all these sort of stuff."

The hard work and persistence was all worth it when Frankston Peninsula took on North Melbourne

in Round 1 of the 1993-94 season. Crowds flocked to Jubilee Park to see history made. "There was

no fence, we had shade cloth constructed by Bill Wills for sightscreens, a chalk scoreboard," Prendy

said. "And traffic gridlock with so many people wanting to get in to see the first session of District

Cricket at Frankston. That was a highlight."

Prendergast has seen a thousand players come and go in 20 years. "Someone will walk up to me and

say 'Gday Prez, I'm Billy so-and-so and I played a few games in the twos or threes and then I went

back to Clyde'. I say, 'Oh yeah, how ya going mate?' Prendergast said the aim of the club had been

achieved - to give locals a chance to play Premier Cricket. "Over the period the club feels as if it's

served its purpose - 87 per cent of the players have come from the Mornington Peninsula region."

FRANKSTON Peninsula Cricket Club celebrated 20 years in Premier Cricket with a gala dinner at the

Frankston RSL on Saturday, November 9. About 150 attended, including eight members of the

inaugural First XI side that took to the field in the first game on October 2, 1993. The club announced

a side of the 20 years (as per following page) which was a highlight of the fantastic evening.

Heat players star in

U19 National Championships

Frankston Standard Leader, 16 December 2013 FRANKSTON Peninsula cricketers Ben Ashkenazi, Jake Wood, Rob Salerni (all pictured below) and Michael De Iacovo all performed well for Victoria in the Under-19 National Championships in Hobart, which finished last week. Fast bowler Ashkenazi was a standout for Victoria, just as he was in the carnival last year. In five matches, he took 14-176 at 12.57 off 67 overs. Ashkenazi was equal second with Queensland’s Billy Stanlake (14-110) for the most wickets overall behind Daya Singh from NSW (15/156). Cricket Australia’s national talent manager Greg Chappell said the Under-19 National Championships in Hobart would double as a final selection trial ahead of next year’s World Cup. Wood, who is eligible for next year’s titles, didn’t get as many opportunities but still impressed, taking 2-90 off 25 overs for the championships. Keeper-batsman Salerni didn’t get much of a bat (usually coming in at number 8). He ended up with 111 runs from his three innings with a highest score of 85 in the final match when he opened. He also took nine catches behind the stumps. Another Frankston Peninsula player, Michael De Iacovo, made 12, 8 and 10 opening the batting for the Northern Territory before making 133 off 218 balls (18 x 4, 1 x 6) against ACT, and then 69 in the final match against Tasmania. Michael finished the fourth highest run scorer overall with 232 runs at 46.40, only 13 runs behind Jake Doran from NSW (245 runs at 81.67).

BUTLER OVAL DRAINAGE

Thanks to Frankston City Council who funded and installed a comprehensive drainage system on

Butler Oval in March & April 2014. This will ensure the ground no longer is prone to being water

logged, especially after long wet winters that previously negatively affected the surface. Rather than

waiting until well into the cricket season for the surface to recover, it is now hoped that the surface

will be in a very high standard at the start of each cricket season due to the new drainage in place.
