Fraser Alexander Constructionplays an active role contracting

in the geosynthetic industryA project involving geosynthetics by Fraser AlexanderConstruction entailed the extension of the existing tailingsdam footprint for a chrome mine in the Rustenburgarea. Knight-Piesold was appointed as the designengineers on the project and Fraser AlexanderConstruction was contracted to facilitate the constructionof the complex extension.

Driven by regulatory changes, tailings dam facility areasthat previously were unlined would now have to beconstructed with a liner system. This has been designedto minimise the intrusion of contaminated water fromthe tailings facility into the under-ground water supply;and was achieved by the installation of a 1.5mm HDPEliner system in crucial areas during the constructionphase of the project.

At the tailings dam HDPE liner was installed in theblanket drain and inner toe drain; primarily to avoid anyseepage. Liner was also installed in the solution trenchfor the same reason, as well as the added benefit of

minimising the loss of return water required at the plant.

Included in the project scope was the lining of theexisting return water dam also with a 1.5mm HDPEliner. The return water dam was partially silted up.Water was pumped out of the return water dam and allremaining silt was removed and disposed of. Thisoperation was challenging as the return water dambasin remained very wet. The site team of FraserAlexander Construction de-watered the dam successfully.The team then de-silted the return water dam basin;excavating until competent founding material wasencountered. A norite layer was imported from borrowand was placed as a bedding material inside the basinon the floor to act as a protection layer for the liner. Allexposed surfaces in the dam basin were then first linedwith an A6 geotextile. This gave addition protection forthe liner. The liner was then installed through an anchortrench on the crest of the return water dam’s wall andplaced over the entire internal footprint of the dam.

Dura-Line Holdings, Inc a portfolio company of Chicago-

based CHS Capital, has completed the acquisition of

Nextube, a manufacturer of high density polyethylene

industrial products. Nextube is the second acquisition

completed by Dura-Line since CHS Capital`s investment

in January 2102.

Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Nextube

manufactures a wide range of cable conduit, sub-soil

drainage pipe and associated accessories. The acquisition

will increase Dura-lines capacity, penetration and

diversification in Sub-Saharan Africa.

It is an honour and privilege for me to be taking over the reinsof GIGSA from our outgoing president Anton Bain. His hasbeen a productive term of office, with a number of educationalevents having taken place, progress on specifications, doublingof GIGSA benefactor membership, re-launch of the GIGSAwebsite, and other achievements under his watch. Well doneto Anton and the outgoing committee for volunteering of theirtime and for their considerable effort for GIGSA. Specialmention must be made of three stalwarts who have retiredfrom committee: Garth James, Mike Wittman and PeterDavies. Their valued contributions over many years havegone a long way towards making GIGSA what it is today. Tomake up for their loss, we welcome several new committeemembers: Paul Pratt, Gareth Harper, Martin Schäffner, MornéBreytenbach and Darryn Meisel.

The new committee looks forward to serving you, ourmembers, over the next two years. Taking into accountSection 2 of our Constitution, my vision for my terms is asfollows:

To continue to offer one world class educationexperience on a geosynthetics related subject peryear.

To continue to raise the standing of GIGSA in ourworking environment.

To interact with and offer educational experiencesto associated fields that may have little knowledgeof geosynthetics, such as environmental practitioners,officials, auditors and newly graduated engineers.

To lead a hands-on GIGSA committee that sets outto achieve its aims over the next two years.

We have a number of ideas for GIGSA going forward. Oneof these is to introduce a lecture series, similar to thatorganised by the SAICE Geotechnical Division. The aim ofthese lectures will be to allow local and visiting geosyntheticsexperts the chance to transfer knowledge, interact withmembers on a more frequent basis and take less of ourmembers’ time and money. Our first lecture is scheduled forthe 10th April at 4PM at Ambrosia Hall in Midrand, and willbe presented by Mr Alan Bamforth of the UK on ‘DrainageGeocomposites in Landfill Containment’. See page 9 for moredetails. If you have any suggestions regarding lectures, pleasecontact Martin Schäffner, who holds the GIGSA eventsportfolio, on martins@aquatan.co.za

For our main educational event this year, we will be teamingup with the IWMSA’s Landfill Interest Group on Landfill 2013,which will be held in Gauteng from the 16-18 November2013. Dr George Koerner of the Geosynthetics Institute, USA,will be the keynote speaker for the conference as well as theshort course on the 18th November. GIGSA looks forward tohosting Dr Koerner.

We are also looking to develop a one day course introducinggeosynthetics to newly qualified engineers, to be offeredthrough SAICE’s Candidate Academy. While adding anythingon geosynthetics to the engineering undergraduate curriculumis a challenge due to the full curriculum, we believe thatoffering a short post-graduate introduction to those whocould gain from geosynthetics would be useful. This will bepresented by suitably qualified GIGSA committee members.Again, watch this space.

Following on from the successful GeoAfrica 2009 conferenceheld in Cape Town, the second regional GeoAfrica conferenceis scheduled for this year. GeoAfrica 2013 will be held inAccra, Ghana from the 18-20 November 2013. Gigsa will beassisting with the technical programme. Please considerbeing a part of our second regional African conference,particularly as this is situated in a key mining area of Africa.

News from the IGS is that Edoardo Zannoni has been secondedon to IGS Council, and Irene Nyirenda is chair of the YoungMembers Committee of the IGS. Congratulations to both.

News from the SABS is that eight new SANS geosyntheticsstandards have been published, with more in the pipeline.

IGS European Young members sub-committeeThe IGS European young members sub-committee wasestablished at EuroGeo5 in September 2012 in Spain.Irene Nyirenda was elected as the sub-committee chair,Laura Carbone as co-chair, and Maria Crespo assecretary. IGS Council member Nathalie Touze-Foltz isoverseeing the sub-committee.

The sub-committee is required to draft a documentstating what the aims of the sub-committee, and toundertake initial technical tasks by the next IGS councilmeeting in Ghana in November 2013.The IGS has suggested that this group of young,energetic, multi-lingual members undertake the followingitems:

Multi-lingual terminology (already initiated in2012 in Spanish and Portuguese)

Review of the IGS Power Point presentations inthe “members only” sectionAdditional leaflets (in other languages)Proposing the contents for a web page for thisYoung Members Committee.

Requirements for membership are still being drawingup, but are l ikely to include the following:

That the candidate members are IGS members,That they be young (less than 36),That there is not unbalanced representation, andThat the candidate member is committed towork (not just put this membership in his/herresume).

The Fifth European Geosynthetics Conference (EuroGeo5)was held on 16 to 19 September 2012, in Valencia,Spain. The three day conference was organized by theIGS Spanish Chapter, under the auspices of IGSInternational with over 830 delegates from all over theworld participating and nearly 300 technical papers onhydraulic structures, soil reinforcement, environmentalapplications, mining, erosion control, transport andbuilding construction applications.

The conference provided a platform and an internationalbenchmark forum to discuss recent developments inthe various applications of Geosynthetics as well as thesubjects related to the research and development ofnew products and uses.

Preliminary short courses were offered to those delegatesnot so familiar with the Geosynthetics industry and wantto gain more knowledge. The two short courses thatwere offered were “Introduction to Geosynthetics usesand design criteria” and Quality Assurance and Controlof Geosynthetics in Landfill application”

Educational sessions and keynote lectures were givenwhich facilitated an exchange of knowledge with regardsthe latest developments in the field.

The Four Keynote Lectures presented were;

1. Jean Pierre Giroud “Geosynthetics: a remarkablediscipline with great achievements in the past and exciting challenges for a bright future”

2. Jorge Zornberg “Geosynthetic-reinforced pavement systems”,

3. Nathalie Touze-Foltz “Performance of geosynthetics for environmental protection inlandfills”

4. Manuel Blanco and Angel Leiro “Spanish experience in Geomembranes in hydraulicapplications”

Three Educational sessions and two panel discussionswere also present. A special session for the eleven

students’ recipients of the IGS student award was madeavailable, one of which was GIGSA student awardrecipient Irene Nyirenda. This allowed the students topresent their relevant research technical papers to abigger audience.

IGS president Jorge Zornberg also announced the creationof a Young members committee of the IGS (below 36years old). The IGS student awards recipients for 2012were automatically selected to be the first members ofthis Young members committee.

short coursesGIGSA hosted Professor R. Jonathan Fannin of the Universityof British Columbia, Canada in early November 2012. ProfFannin presented a series of short courses on Geosyntheticreinforced soil & Geotextile filtration of soil during the weekof 5th to 9th November in Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town.His thoughtful, balanced approach to geosynthetics use,polished presentation skills and wry sense of humour wereall on good form.

A total of 87 delegates attended either or both of the twodays in Pretoria, 31 delegates attended in Durban and 21 inCape Town. This is the largest number of attendees to datefor a GIGSA short course series, with 137 delegates in total.The short courses were well received with many positivecomments submitted.

Thank you to Professor Fannin for all his time and excellentpresentations, to the GIGSA organisers (Louis du Plessis,Garth James, etc) for their input and to Yolandé Ooshuizenof RCA for her tireless organisation. A big thank you is alsoextended to our sponsors for making the course a lot moreaffordable, and for supporting education in geosynthetics inSouth Africa. The sponsors for these events were GeotextilesAfrica, Kaytech and Maccaferri.

Prof Fannin was also the guest speaker at GIGSA’s AGM onTuesday 6 November 2012, and gave a very interestinglecture on ‘Critical filters in dams and dam applications:granular and geosynthetic’.

GIGSA couldn’t invite Professor Fannin to SA without showinghim at least some of the sights. Prior to the short courseskicking off, four intrepid GIGSA members accompanied ourvisitor on the Wolhuter Wilderness Trail in the Kruger NationalPark. It was incredible experience to see a beautiful, unspoiltarea of the park on foot, and come into such close proximityto creatures large and small. We saw the Big Five, with lionsand a leopard spotted from the vehicle rather than on foot,as well as several of the Little Five. With the courses still tocome, we made sure that Jonathan wasn’t in any danger.

Following the Johannesburg courses and the GIGSA AGM,Garth James ably hosted Jonathan in Durban and Cape Town.

Amongst other activities, they traversed the Cape Peninsulahighlighted by Cape Point and Chapman’s Peak Drive, tookin the SA-Ireland test at the Waterfront (Jonathan is Irish-born), and were still on speaking terms afterwards. All in all,it was a very successful visit.

Landfill 2013 and Short Courseby Dr George Koerner16th to 18th October 2013

GIGSA and Landfill Interest Group (LIG) of the Institute of Waste Management of South Africa (IWMSA) CentralBranch will be co-hosting Landfill 2013 on the 16th and 17th of October 2013 at the Misty Hills Conference Centrein Muldersdrift, Johannesburg. The theme of the conference will be “Effective environmental protection from theresidues of modern civilization”. This aims to include general waste, hazardous waste, industrial waste (slags andso forth), power station residues and mining residues. Landfill 2013 is a continuation of a conference series thatwas originated in the Western Cape LIG and which has been successfully hosted every second year since 1997.The conference hopes to draw both local and international speakers to cover topics related to design and engineeringof waste disposal and mine residue facilities. Abstracts are due by the 26 April 2013, and can be submittedelectronically: click here.

Dr George Koerner of the Geosynthetics Institute, based in Folsom, Pennsylvania, USA, will give the keynoteaddress at the conference, as well as offer a short course on Friday the 18th October 2013 on a topic related togeosynthetics. The topic of the latter will be communicated in due course. A first call for abstracts will be forwardedto GIGSA and IWMSA members in the next few weeks.

Alan Bamforth BSc CEng MICE CIHT is the founder and Managing Director of ABG, which develops,

manufactures and provides cuspated geocomposite drainage products into UK environmental engineering

practice. Alan has over 25 years of experience in geotechnical and geosynthetic engineering with particular

reference to UK and international landfill containment systems. Alan has developed Construction Industry

Research and Information Association (CIRIA) guidance for Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) and

Green Roofs, published professional papers on topics related to containment system performance and is a

qualified expert witness.

Alan’s lecture, “Drainage Geocomposites in Landfill Containment”, will reveal the importance of fluid

pressure relief for the stability and long term performance of the engineered containment facility. Specific

reference to design criteria, slope stability, key properties and test methods. This will be illustrated by

reference to examples of good and bad practice. While GIGSA has hosted a number of North American

experts in recent years, Alan will offer a European perspective.
