Over 90% of the intercontinental flows of goods are moved by sea - and this means that more and more goods have to be transported on the limited routes between ports at ever shorter intervals, transhipped in the confined spaces of the ports and then transported via the extremely busy hinterland connections. Innovative system solutions in the field of maritime logistics are key to ensuring that these flows of goods are handled cost effectively, reliably and in an envi- ronment-friendly manner. The use of state-of-the-art technology, the smooth integration of flows of mate- rial and information along the process chain and the use of innovative IT systems complete with identifica- tion and localisation functionalities are central to this process. The Fraunhofer Center for Maritime Logistics and Services (CML) conducts professional contract research for private and public sector clients in the maritime industry, including ports, terminal operators, shipping companies and logistics service providers. To this end, we plan, develop and implement innovative, customer- focused problem solutions for the maritime supply chain.

MARITIME LOGISTICS – RECONCILING PRODUCTIVITY, ECOLOGY, SAFETY AND SECURITY

Economic growth and global isat ion are dr iv ing increa-

s ing demand for transport , t ransshipment and ware-

housing serv ices. Over 90% of the intercont inental

f lows of goods are moved by sea - and this means that

more and more goods have to be transported on the

l imited routes between ports at ever shorter intervals ,

t ranshipped in the conf ined spaces of the ports and

then transported v ia the extremely busy hinter land

connect ions.

Innovat ive system solut ions in the f ie ld of mar i t ime

logist ics are key to ensur ing that these f lows of goods

are handled cost effect ive ly , re l iably and in an envi-

ronment-fr iendly manner. The use of state-of-the-art

technology, the smooth integrat ion of f lows of mate-

r ia l and information a long the process chain and the

use of innovat ive IT systems complete with ident if ica-

t ion and local isat ion funct ional i t ies are centra l to this

process.

The Fraunhofer Center for Mar i t ime Logist ics and

Serv ices (CML) conducts profess ional contract research

for pr ivate and publ ic sector c l ients in the mar i t ime

industry, inc luding ports , terminal operators, shipping

companies and logist ics serv ice providers. To this end,

we plan, develop and implement innovat ive, customer-

focused problem solut ions for the mar i t ime supply

chain.

PLANNING FORECASTSPROCESSES

The challenges

The best way to meet the environmental and safety requirements

for maritime transport and transshipment processes is through

seamlessly integrated routines, anticipatory information flows and

the efficient use of technology and IT systems.

In the field of intermodal transport in particular, the high number

of interacting agents calls for front-to-end process organisation

in order to satisfy requirements in terms of speed, pricing and

service. The goal is to define the potential of the various system

elements and then to develop and jointly implement holistic

solution strategies.

What we offer

We provide our customers with effective support in the optimi-

sation of their logistics and business processes, drawing on the

latest scientific insights and methods as well as on our sector

experience and our wide-ranging technological expertise.

Our services

Potential checks

Process optimisation

Implementation support

Feasibility studies on the use of technology and IT

The challenges

Volatile markets, fierce competitive pressure and high customer

expectations of the services provided in maritime logistics chains

pose major challenges for port development, terminal planning

and fleet organisation.

The high investment volumes and the major implications of deci-

sions in this area necessitate painstaking and farsighted planning.

The flexibility and robustness of planning solutions and the ability

to integrate the various parties involved in and affected by these

decisions in the planning processes effectively and at the earliest

possible stage is becoming ever more important.

What we offer

We use innovative planning tools and models to support our

customers in their complex planning processes, contributing new

ideas and boosting both the speed and quality of planning.

Our services

Planning support using innovative planning tools

Simulation studies to assess and verify planning solutions

Support and supervision of planning projects

Cost efficiency and feasibility studies

The challenges

Infrastructure and suprastructure decisions in the field of mariti-

me logistics as well as in the development of ports, terminals and

waterways or the optimisation of fleet organisation are characte-

rised by their long-term nature and wide-ranging consequences.

Port and terminal structures are planned and implemented over a

number of years and are designed to remain in operation for de-

cades. The same applies to the use of new cargo vessels. Trends

in the development of worldwide shipment and container flows,

the anticipated development of vessel sizes and international

competition are factors that need to be taken into consideration

in the run-up to the decision-making process.

What we offer

We prepare maritime forecasts, expert opinions and studies for

our customers, providing them with reliable information on which

to base strategic decisions. When preparing this documentation,

we take advantage of our scientific network and make full use of

comprehensive data banks and innovative modelling approaches.

Our services

Technology analysis and early detection

Market analyses and forecasts

Risk identification and assessment

Strategy recommendations
