The author introduces the essay with a brief description of the status quo. He, along with the majority of American citizens, has been instructed by president to purchase goods in order to further bolster the economy amidst the post-9/11 terrorist against. The author seems to perform this to an extreme extent, as he is often faced with personal finance issues and disputes with his wife. Nevertheless, he feels content and useful, as he is inevitably supporting his country in the effort towards combating terrorism. He nearly satirizes the subservient and uninformed nature of the American public, as he states that because the media has endorsed uninhibited public crying, he should likewise do the same. The author continues his argument of contributing to his own country by detailing the history of the United States and the extent of certain groups that have contributed to the country in a time of conflict. Specifically, Frazier tells of the women during the Civil War who remained at home sewing and preparing foods for the men in combat. He compares himself to these more domesticated individuals, and notes that the majority of the American public now serves in these passive positions. Ironically, Americans now contribute less than ever to their country. Purchasing products and consumer confidence seems to be the most direct means of aiding the government.
