Many Boone Countians, especially those with roots in Chicago or the closer-in suburbs remember these outings fondly. It’s a family time and a tradition well- worth passing down. While the trip is ostensibly about shopping, it’s really a chance to climb out of the everyday rut and have a relatively inexpensive fling in a big city. Conde Nast Traveler has ranked Chicago as their number one tourist city in the United States. Think of the Christmas season as an excuse to go to Chicago. It’s a chance to catch up and see what is new and exciting. And there are plenty of new things to see. We are going to make the assumption that you are making this trip on the weekend. We are big fans of the one-year-old Park-and-Ride lot at Interstate 90 and Randall Road for weekday trips. But for a weekend trip, we recommend Metra from Crystal Lake. (Buses from Randall Road do not run late on Saturday and not at all on Sunday.) Parking is free in Crystal Lake on Saturday and Sunday. A round-trip, weekend ticket is only $8 per adult, children 11 and under ride free. At first blush, a shopping trip may seem a little old- fashioned. After all, shopping is largely done online nowadays and the idea of spending a day at Marshall Field and Company’s gargantuan department store seems strange. Only a few decades ago, there were six huge department stores on State Street between Randolph Street and Congress Parkway. Not one of them remains. Department stores seem so 1965, don’t they? It’s not retail that’s passé, it’s the many chain stores that simply haven’t kept up with the times. All too often, the emphasis in modern retail has been about finance and carrying only the lines with the highest margins and fastest turnover. Lost is the idea of presenting an exciting retail experience and the merchandise that the lady actually wants. If your tradition is to go to the Christkindl Market at the Daley Center; the windows, tree and Santa at Macy’s; then hot chocolate and ice skating at Millennium Park, by all means, go and enjoy. But this year we thought we’d focus on Michigan Avenue, also known as the Magnificent Mile. We are pleased to report that retail is alive and well and still exciting in Chicago. As John Chikow, President of the Magnificent Mile Association, said, “The density of The Magnificent Mile retail offerings is unparalleled in the country. The retail experience extends far past the point of sale. The iconic architecture and unique gardens along Michigan Avenue surprise and delight those who have never experienced them.” North Michigan Avenue boasts five department stores and hundreds of boutiques. It’s said to be skewing more towards “experiential” retail than the more traditional retail. But we think fashionable retail has always been about the pleasant experience of seeing new things and deciding whether to acquire them. Shopping should be more fun and exciting than prowling the tunafish aisle at Woodman’s! Retail is theater--something the late Marshall Field understood well. He invented the department store restaurant and the accompanying fashion shows. Here are some new shops you might want to consider visiting while walking under the Michigan Avenue trees, famously decorated with thousands of lights: Probably no store has seen as much buzz as the new Apple store on Michigan at the north bank of the Chicago River. (see accompanying story, page 2.) Opened on October 20, the store has been doing brisk business in Apple- branded electronic goods and hosted a number of events and presentations. If you want to shop for a new iPhone X in the ultimate Apple venue, this is the place for you. If you are looking for a new pair of boots or other accessories, the Ugg store at 545 North Michigan has a full selection of the retailer’s wares. Footwear and boots, short or tall, for women, men and kids. There is also a full selection of outerwear. No retail story seems to be complete without discussing Amazon, who has a seasonal, pop-up store across the street from Ugg in the Shops at North Bridge. The store apparently focuses on electronics and services that Amazon provides. Sears started out as a catalog merchant, and increasingly, Amazon seems to be treading down the same path toward brick and mortar stores. A Century’s Impact on Belvidere Education By Sofi Zeman The building pictured below is 520 Pearl Street, known as the Pearl Place Senior Apartments. 101 years ago, this building, located at Pearl and Pleasant Streets, was an addition to Belvidere High School. Before this 1916 building was built, the original building was the Garfield School, serving students from the grade through high school level. The building displayed above became a junior high school that many members of our community attended. Yet, the student populace was ever-increasing in a developing Belvidere. About a decade later came the construction of Belvidere South Middle School. A few decades later, overpopulation in the schools again became an issue. Students were attending school in shifts. Classrooms were overcrowded. Thus, followed Belvidere Central Middle School and most recently, Belvidere North High School in 2007. District 100 made the executive decision to split the city’s academics by location. One side of the Kishwaukee River attended school on the south side of town, the other side would attend school in the northern part. From this divide came a little friendly, crosstown competition. Whether it be through academics, athletics or the arts, a rivalry can be found between Belvidere High School and Belvidere North. All competition and population growth aside, it’s clear to see that the education system in Belvidere is constantly developing. We began with traditional arithmetic, chalkboards and lecture style classes. These methods are almost rare in a modern educational setting. Technology and advancements made in science and mathematics has become vital in a classroom setting. New hands-on learning tactics have been encouraged in the classroom. Dr. Woestman, the superintendent of District 100, has been meeting with students across the district to discover new ways to improve educational methods. Within the past 100 years, education has come this far. Where it will take us in another 100 years starts with improvements being made today. General Primary Begins in Boone County By Sofi Zeman Election season is upon us, here in Boone County. Due to lack of opposition, nearly all county board positions and county offices have already been determined, at least for the primary round. Many of these candidates will likely hold these positions come general election time due to lack of opposition. The position of County Clerk will not be designated as easily. In the upcoming year, newly appointed clerk Julie Stapler will run against Diann Helnore to maintain her current position. Stapler is running as a Republican. She was appointed as County Clerk and Recorder earlier this year when then- Clerk and Recorder, Mary Steurer, retired. Steurer held the position for six years from 2011 to June 2017. Stapler, for the past six months, has overseen the county’s records, as well tax records and land transactions. Diann Helnore is challenging Stapler as a Democrat. Helnore served as the Belvidere Township Tax Assessor from 2009 to 2013. Earlier this year, she attempted to challenge Township Supervisor Bill Robertson in the April election. She failed to do so, after Clerk Steurer reported to the Township Electoral Board that Helnore missed the 244 required signatures on a petition to get on the ballot by eight votes. She filed to be placed on the ballot for County Clerk this past Monday morning. On a larger scale, the race for Governor of Illinois is just beginning as well. Governor Bruce Rauner, aspiring to be elected to his second term, has secured the Republican nomination, running unopposed in the primary. On the Democratic side, three candidates will run against each other in the primary: J.B. Pritzker, Chris Kennedy and Daniel Biss are all running. Pritzker, part of the well-known Pritzker family, founded Pritzker Group Venture Capital, the top venture investor in the area. Kennedy is the Chair of Joseph P. Kennedy Enterprises, Inc. He also served on the Board of Trustees for the University of Illinois. Daniel Biss has served as an Illinois Senator since 2013. He was also a member of the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2013. In order to stay up to date on the political goings- on of both Boone County and Illinois, keep these dates in mind: February 8 is the first day for early voting for the primary election. Regular voting registration ends February 20. But, online voter registration will be available until March 4. The primary elections will be held on March 20, 2018. The general election voting will begin on September 27 until early voting closes November 5. The official general elections will be held on November 6. Congressional Race Narrows As we go to press, Nathan Arroyave, Democratic candidate for Congress in the 16th District, has dropped out of the race and is backing Rockford immigration attorney Sara Dady. Boone Democratic Board Member Jessica Muellner has also endorsed Dady.

Christmas in Chicago

A Tradition in Transitionby Charles Herbst

For decades, the Chicagoland tradition has been to take the family downtown to see the decorations, do some shopping and otherwise experience things not found in suburbia. Many Boone Countians, especially those with roots in Chicago or the closer-in suburbs remember these outings fondly. It’s a family time and a tradition well-worth passing down.

Architecture Review

The Retail Theater by Charles Herbst

For generations, “retail is theater” has been a familiar allegory in the retail world. This past autumn, Apple turned the allegory into reality.

The new Apple store on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue is probably the most exciting new retail space in the city since the opening of Water Tower Place in 1976.

The store sits along the north bank of the Chicago River immediately east of Michigan Avenue. Access is via Pioneer Court, the plaza to the south of Tribune Tower, across from the Wrigley Building. The location is arguably in the center of one of the most architecturally important spots in the world.

This striking building, designed by Foster and Partners of London, forms a stairway between Pioneer Court on the Michigan Avenue level and the riverfront. The site provides an important access to the river from the street level. Four interior columns support a Macbook-shaped, thin carbon-fiber roof. The curtain wall of the building consists of huge, curved glass walls, making the interior and exterior of the building blend together.

When viewed outside from the river or the south bank, the store appears to be a huge theater, enclosed by a curving, 32-foot high glass box. Both inside and out, the building features tiered seating, starting at the Pioneer Court level and extending down to the riverfront level. The stairs and trees extend beyond the glass walls and diminish the boundary between interior and exterior space. The inside tiered seating area is used to host presentations and other programs, with the audience facing the river. While seated or descending down to the main, riverfront level of the store, the audience can watch boat traffic on the river beyond the stage area and a relatively compact backdrop.

Underneath the upper seating area on the river level is the primary sales area of the store where various phones, computers, printers and other Apple merchandise are displayed. The store appears to be as much of a display salon as a place where retail sales are intended to be made. In addition to the stairs, a large glass elevator connects the street and river level. The store can be entered on either the street or river levels.

Whether you are an Apple, Linux or Windows user, the store definitely makes a striking design statement implying that Apple is a well-designed, avant-garde product.

I found the store to be functional and an impressive place with only two detracting aspects. Birds have been having a difficult time with the building and crashing into the windows. Apple is trying to ameliorate this. The other disappointing aspect was the lack of access at the riverside level to both the south bank of the river and the north bank west of Michigan Avenue near the Wrigley Building. An upgrade of the Lower Level Michigan Avenue Bridge as well as a better vertical connection (perhaps a glass elevator on the south bank) would make the riverfront more accessible.

One of the early 1980s bon mots often heard at cocktail parties was that if everyone who claimed to have voted for John Anderson for President had actually done so, Anderson, rather than Ronald Reagan, would have been elected.

Born in Rockford to Swedish immigrants, Anderson obviously worked hard to become valedictorian of his high school class. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and earned both undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Illinois. He went on to obtain a masters degree in law from Harvard. He was a member of the debate team at Illinois and served in the US Army during WWII. He became a skilled orator and learned how to persuade others to his point of view.

John Anderson started his life as a very conservative man. He was a prosecutor and initially a very conservative Congressman from Rockford. But not only was John Anderson persuasive, he was also persuadable. When he went to Washington, his world view expanded and his opinions changed. He supported open housing, opposed the war in Vietnam and was one of the early Republican voices demanding Richard Nixon’s resignation.

Like most Americans, I first heard of John Anderson when he ran for President in 1980. He was an interesting man, with a definite point of view. His agenda was that of a progressive, and most notably called for a hefty gasoline tax to reduce American dependence on foreign oil. Anderson was not afraid to express this view, despite its repulsiveness to many, if not most Americans.

Remembering John B. AndersonAs a young man, I voted for John Anderson, despite my Aunt

Lois telling me that I was wasting my vote. He made a credible case for an alternative future that wasn’t either about turning back the clock or simply accepting the “malaise” and broken dreams so common in the late 1970s.

Twenty years later, I once again saw John Anderson. Ralph Nader ran for President in 2000. A huge Nader rally was held in the University of Illinois at Chicago Pavilion. There was a paid attendance of over 10,000 people. The list of speakers was irresistible. In addition to Nader, the long lineup included Phil Donahue, Jello Biafra, Michael Moore, Studs Terkel, and John Anderson.

Anderson was one of the last to speak before Nader. It was interesting to watch John Anderson speak to a youthful audience who had not heard him before and, in many cases, were too young to remember the 1980 election.

As I watched from a side seat near the front, facing the crowd, John Anderson discussed his ideas of international rights and freedoms. These concepts were far beyond the experience of his audience. Yet the crowd was quickly mesmerized and enthralled by both his words and arguments. Watching Anderson captivate and persuade this young audience was memorable.

Rather than an outstanding career as a Congressman, Anderson’s ability to persuade and be persuaded is what made him an extraordinary public servant. We learn that the United States was founded on a bundle of compromises. Our government is based on the notion that people of good faith come together to forge a consensus, that will ultimately lead to a more perfect union.

We will miss John Anderson.

It’s the last call for Crate and Barrel at 646 N. Michigan Avenue. Crate and Barrel has been on Michigan Avenue, selling martini glasses and serving bowls for as long as any of us can remember. Only the Michigan Avenue store is closing in January; other locations will remain open. The Michigan Avenue location will be converted to a Starbuck’s Roastery, which will open in 2019.

Rumors abound that Tesla is about to open a showroom on North Michigan. A deal isn’t final, and the store won’t be available for this trip, but shopping for an electric car probably will be part of the experience in future years.

If you’re looking for a new bomber jacket or parka, you’re in luck. Canada Goose has just opened at 800 N. Michigan. The store is one of only seven Canada Goose locations in the world. The company is known for high-quality, made in Canada outerwear, suitable for a polar expedition. The store features warm furs, goose down and Merino wool. The company prominently advertises its commitment to humane treatment of animals that are used in their products. Their activities include preserving habitat for polar bears. Parkas average $900-$1000. Bomber jackets are $800. A Merino wool beanie is $75.

If all the shopping has made you hungry for a treat, there is a new Sugar Bliss Cake Boutique at 820 North Michigan. It’s a premium Chicago bakery with other locations on Wabash Avenue in the Loop and in the Palmer House. Across the street, in the lobby of Water Tower Place, is a new Frango Chocolate Boutique. If your tastes run to something stronger, the Ritz-Carlton at Water Tower Place has recently remodeled its lobby, where you can obtain your favorite adult beverage. You can enter the Ritz from the second level of the shopping arcade or the Pearson Street side of Water Tower Place.

After the long hike, why not splurge and take a taxi (or Uber) back to the train? Tell the driver to take you to the Ogilvie Transportation Center, where you can catch a train back to your car in Crystal Lake.
