POSTERS reading “blacks banned” are springing up around North Perth.

Halinka Lamparksi spotted one at Robertson Park and alerted Vincent city council. Rangers swooped and removed about eight.

While the shock headline indicates racist intent, the smaller text suggests the signs may have been slapped up by Aboriginal activists unhappy with police moving them out of the area’s parks.

“Aboriginal people are banned from coming here,” the fi ne print states.

“No Indigenous people are allowed to be on their traditional grounds of Perth in this area.

“If they do, they get a move on notice from the police and a fi ne of $200.

The posters follow revelations that last year 40 per cent of WA’s move-on notices were issued to Aborigines, who represent about four per cent of the population.

Linda Black, the president of the WA Criminal Lawyers’ Association complained on ABC Radio in December the laws were being misused. They’d supposedly been introduced by the former Labor government to control disruptions outside pubs and clubs, not turf Aborigines out of the CBD.

TO bee or not to bee. Steve Fletcher found himself pondering his own mortality after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in November 2012.

The cancer has a very low survival rate—six per cent survive more than fi ve years—as it often goes undetected and is diagnosed at an advanced stage.

Instead of wallowing in self-pity, the 65-year-old from Inglewood decided to revisit a childhood love of bee-keeping to keep focused and stay active.

Now in remission, he says his hobby got him through a year of gruelling chemotherapy and a 10-hour surgery to remove a section of pancreas.

“I found bee-keeping very therapeutic, it got me back in touch with nature and the outdoors, without being too physically taxing,” he says.

“On a social level it was good too and I met loads of great folk at the WA Apiarists Society.

“I like to think I’m giving something back—bees are great for the environment and are responsible for pollination and keep the ecosystem churning over.”

Married with two sons, Mr Fletcher is looking for homeowners in Inglewood and Bedford who are interested in hosting hives in their back garden.

He off ers a free bee removal service on Gumtree and is looking for new homes for the pollinators.

“Usually a quarter-acre lot is big enough to have a hive in the back garden,” he says.

“I would come around and maintain them—they won’t cause neighbours any problems if they’re set up correctly.

THE developer of a Mt Hawthorn apartment block that was rejected by Vincent council has confi rmed he’s appealing to the powerful but unelected state administrative tribunal, which has the authority to overturn decisions made by elected councils.

Six locals fronted the fi nal council meeting of 2013, saying the project was too big and would bring extra traffi c to Shakespeare Street.

Dominations Homes managing director Domenic Minniti says the 18-unit plan is largely compliant with local planning rules about overlooking and having the

THE games console is set to mingle with the cello at Perth concert hall.

As part of the 2014 Perth festival, the WA symphony orchestra will play music from famous video games as they are projected onto a huge screen in the background.

The recital will include music from BioShock one, two and infi nite; Grim Fandango; Uncharted two and three; and Journey.

The video game cross-over is part of a push from WASO to attract a younger audience to live classical music.

The orchestra has previously performed live scores to movies, including Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean, but this is the fi rst time it has accompanied video games.

WASO bassoonist Adam Mikulicz, 30, says as long as the music has integrity, members of the orchestra aren’t overly concerned about its origins.

“The cross-over concerts are extremely popular and both Lord of the Rings shows sold out,” he

told the Voice.“That soundtrack was

extremely intricate and used every ounce of the orchestra, including a children’s chorus.

“Attracting people to classical music who wouldn’t normally go is a good thing, as far as I’m concerned, it’s good to play a diff erent type of audience.”

The concert will also have an interactive section, where sounds and noises submitted

by the public leading up to the event are incorporated into a live WASO performance.

The event is the brainchild of Tod Machover—composer and professor at MIT’s Media Lab—whose students went on to create the hit console game Guitar Hero.

The concert will be conducted by Carolyn Kuan.

driveway cross the minor street rather than feed cars into a busier road makes sense.

Neighbour Vanessa Lombardo criticised the developer’s communication and said she’d had trouble getting hold of him via phone and email after part of her backyard was damaged by the demolition.

Mr Minniti says the criticism was unfair, as he’d taken care to keep locals informed and has an email trail showing he’d alerted neighbours to the date of demolition and erected a replacement fence for the parapet wall that was removed.

“If I had done the wrong thing I’d cop it on the chin,” Mr Minniti told the Voice.

The matter will now go to mediation, and progress to a full SAT hearing if agreement can’t be reached.

The appeal of ShakespeareTHE dream lives on, with Vincent

council allowing Dream Studios to continue on Oxford Street.

Vincent staff ers wanted to close the non-compliant business down last year after a noise complaint, saying the business doesn’t “protect and enhance the health, safety and general welfare of the city’s inhabitants”.

They’d wanted to deny retrospective approval, but councillors deferred it to let owner Jo Poole get his paperwork in order. Councillors have now given the business the thumbs up, with Cr Ros Harley moving to ease up cash-in-lieu restrictions which would’ve otherwise seen the business have to pay $22,375 for not having enough car bays.

“To impose a cash-in-lieu contribution of $22,000 for what is essentially a small business, I think is fairly harsh and would aff ect the viability of the business,” she said.

That fee will be deferred for fi ve years.

A DOG owner was spotted leaving her animal inside a hot car while she made two shopping trips.

Katrina Montaut contacted the Voice saying she’d come across the pooch outside the North Perth plaza on December 29.

The former Vincent council candidate says the dog was trapped for about 10 minutes with the owner nowhere in sight.

She called rangers but it was a Sunday so they couldn’t get anyone out before the dog owner returned and left.

When the woman fi nally came back to her car, Ms Montaut confronted her but the woman was unrepentant and sarcastically said “oh, I feel terrible about it”.

The woman claimed a bottle of water had been left in the car for the dog.

FORMER Bayswater mayor Terry Kenyon has accused the man who beat him for the top job of playing favourites.

The criticism follows mayor Sylvan Albert attending a tennis club function with two other councillors, but not Cr Kenyon.

Cr Kenyon says every elected member should have the opportunity to attend civic events, “not the mayor selecting favoured councillors to attend and denying all other elected ward councillors the opportunity to attend such events”.

The criticism has the new mayor scratching his head.

“I didn’t deliberately not invite Terry to the tennis club. If he was left out it must have been a clerical error because Stephanie Coates and Martin Toldo from the west ward were both there,” he says.

“Since I was elected in October, I have attended 95 per cent of events I’ve been invited to. The other fi ve per cent, to the best of my knowledge, has been attended my deputy mayor Mike Sabatino in my absence.

“I am certainly not favouring other councillors—I want a united council.”

Cr Kenyon was contacted for comment and did not respond.

The motion will be voted on this month.

opposable thumbs!” Ms Montaut says. “She had no remorse.”

The woman then went on a second shopping trip into the bakery before fi nally leaving with the dog.

The RSPCA says dogs trapped in hot cars can die in as little as six minutes.

RSPCA tests showed the

interior of a light-coloured sedan rose to 57 degrees after being left in the sun for just 12 minutes.

RSPCA inspectors have the power to force their way into cars to save animals, so anyone who spots a pooch trapped in a car over summer should call them on 1300 278 3589 or call the police.

WALTERS BROOK in Mt Lawley is getting a $173,360 facelift following years of campaigning from a local environmental group.

The Swan River tributary—eff ectively a Water Corporation drain—has been heavily eroded by fast-running water and contains little of its original vegetation.

Vincent city council will restore the brook by re-contouring banks, installing gabion baskets (wire frames fi lled with rocks) and planting 3500 native plants and trees.

Caroline Cohen, co-chair of the Banks Precinct Action Group, says planting native fl ora will attract migratory birds to Banks Reserve.

“In 2007 a truck crashed at the nearby Mt Lawley subway and engine oil spilled into the brook and straight into the Swan River,” she says.

“A few birds died, so hopefully the restoration will shore it up and help to avoid a similar incident.

“It took a while to get things moving on the brook because we had to consult with so many stakeholders, including the former Swan

River Trust, Noongar people and the Water Corp.”

Since forming in the mid-‘90s, the BPGA’s lobbying has secured a children’s playground and restoration of the foreshore at Banks Reserve.

Vincent acting CEO Mike Rootsey says stabilising the banks will make the brook safer for children at the nearby playground.

Restoration work is scheduled to start this week and will take fi ve months.

LIFE begins at 40—unless you’re the Wellington Street bus station.

The WA government has announced demolition of the station, opened by Labor’s John Tonkin in 1973, will start next month.

It will be replaced by the new underground Perth Busport, scheduled for completion in 2016.

The old station was designed to be a central hub for buses servicing Perth’s north, slashing the number of small termini across the city.

Without ever reaching iconic status, the prosaic station was state-of-the-art in 1973, and bus enthusiasts still drool over the stylish “Clipper” buses.

The yellow city clipper, Perth’s fi rst free service, rolled out of the station in September, 1973.

It ran every 10 minutes during the week and looped round the city, including stops at William and Barrack streets.

At the weekend it only ran on Saturday mornings, because Perth shops closed at noon and did not open Sundays.

WA bus preservation society member Nicholas Pusenjak says most Clipper buses were top of the line.

“It’s funny because they used the fl agship buses as Clippers, but they

THE Beaufort Street lettering artwork is sitting dormant while Vincent city council and the developer negotiate the fi nal details.

The council has paid Bremick Group part of the $133,000 for the project, but the Voice understands the rest of the cash is being withheld till it looks more like the approved plan.

Ken Sealey is the artist Bremick contracted. He says he fi nished his part of the work way back in November but the letters have been sitting there with a fence around them for almost two months now.

only did a small loop of Perth, while the older buses were going longer distances—it used to annoy the drivers,” he laughs.

“Aside from an old Daimler Roadliner, all the Clippers were top of the range.

Businesses at the station have also been moved out, with some fi nding it diffi cult to fi nd new premises because of high rents, says cafe owner Anne Greives.

Transperth had frozen their rent over several years but now they’d have to survive without subsidy.

While Ms Greives was happy to head into retirement, given she’s 84 years old and had been there neary 20 years, she’d had to lay of three employees.

“When I was packing up my things yesterday, all the bus drivers were coming up to me and hugging me, wishing me luck and saying ‘now what will do without our coff ee lady’,” Ms Greives said.

Staff er Trish Hardman said she’d only heard rumours about the demolition and would be out job hunting now Christmas had passed.

The station was well patronised, although use of public transport in the 1970s was relatively low compared to today.

Bus passengers will be relocated to a temporary bus station from January 12.

Mayor John Carey says, “the City of Vincent is not satisfi ed with the delivery of the project”.

“We are now in contract negotiations with the project manager, which is Bremick, regarding the fi nal delivery.

“Personally I want to see this resolved as quickly as possible, but I have to make sure that ratepayers’ interests are looked after and we ensure that the project is completed as detailed.”

The budget for the Hollywood-style lettering has already blown out from $95,000 to $133,000.

We contacted Bremick for comment but it was still closed from new year’s.

MAYLANDS activist Alex Bainbridge will contest WA’s senate re-election as a Socialist Alliance candidate.

After the lost-votes snafu the high court is now fermenting a fi nal decision but a fresh poll is widely regarded as about as certain as Tony Abbott’s victory was in September.

Mr Bainbridge says the election must be held soon so new senators can take their spots as scheduled from July: Any delay in forming the new senate could result in loopholes that may allow the Abbott government to bypass the usual Senate scrutiny of its bills.

There was a public backlash when Sports Party candidate Wayne Dropulich was elected in September with 0.2 per cent of the vote following a round of maths wizardry and complex

MAYLANDS Labor MP Lisa Baker says premier Colin Barnett’s shark-baiting policy is “rushed and potentially dangerous”.

Last month the WA government announced a tender for professional fi shers to use hooks on baited drum lines to catch and kill great white, tiger or bull sharks.

The lines are to be set 1km from selected Perth and south-west beaches and target sharks more than 3m long.

Thousands gathered at Cottesloe Beach last Saturday to protest the policy.

Ms Baker—co-chair of the

preference swapping deals with other parties. Mr Dropulich must recontest a new poll if he wants to keep his spot.

Mr Bainbridge is hoping that blowback won’t harm his chances, noting the Socialist Alliance has been around in one form or another for decades.

“It’s true we’re a minor party, but it’s not like we’ve come from nowhere like a lot of these parties have done.

“We’ve got an active record of engaging with elections and activism.”

He says a major policy of the Socialist Alliance is “to bring the big mining companies and banks under public ownership” in order to “democratise those resources and enable a fair distribution of wealth”.

Mooted Medicare copayments (which would see many pay $6 for a doctor’s visit) are also in his sights. He wants the government to reduce support for private

health insurers and channel that money into Medicare.

While his party’s chances at the polls are slim, Mr Bainbridge says it’s still important to get out and run.

“We are trying to build support, we are trying to make a gradual progression, one step at a time, to go from a minor party to a major party.

“We are saying something in this election that no one else is saying.”

While he supports most Greens policies he says Socialist Alliance’s plans are “more far-reaching and more practical.

“Implementing the Greens’ agenda in full will necessitate a challenge to the capitalist system, which so far they haven’t made clear that they are prepared to do that.

“Over the last term of government we’ve seen compromise [from the Greens] that I’ve found disappointing.”

parliamentary friends of the RSPCA —says other marine life will be caught in the lines too, and their carcasses will attract sharks to the area.

“The Barnett government’s shark policy is an indiscriminate cull which could result in the deaths of other marine species including dolphins, turtles, and non-threatening shark species,” she says.

“It may increase the risk to swimmers by attracting sharks to popular beaches.

“It is not a policy which is based on science—baited drum lines are opposed by marine experts and many within the fi shing industry.”

Ms Baker says a safer alternative is increased

tagging of great whites and the installation of real-time satellite tracking beacons to alert authorities when tagged sharks are near beaches.

“Currently sections of regional coastline in the south-west and south coasts have no such beacons installed,” she says.

Ms Baker says a WA Labor government would accept the off er of tagging and research assistance from the US group Ocearch but “this off er sadly has been rejected by the Barnett government”.

The baiting policy was introduced after seven fatal shark attacks in three years.

It is scheduled to be introduced this weekend.

If you think that all salons are the same - think again. Every

salon is different and every salon offers a unique service with large variations in skill set and experience.

That’s why there’s salons and then there’s great salons. And let’s face it, most of them just don’t cut it, leaving you feeling less than impressed and salon hopping in the hope of fi nding “the one”.

Lilla Corvaia and Tony Gorgone, owner and operators of Trenz located on the fashionable Angove Street in North Perth, believe the difference between a salon and a great salon lies not only in its skill and experience but its ability to combine these to create styles that are expertly engineered to suit individual needs. “It takes workmanship, talent and precision and also an eye for detail and dimension to design a great look” says Tony. “And the ability to ‘style’ only comes once you’ve mastered cutting hair”

he continues. Being a family owned and

operated business, Trenz are proud to offer a “generation of hairdressing” and with over 20 years of experience cutting hair in the North Perth area they have become part of the local

DNA and watched it go from bust to boom. “Angove Street has turned into a really beautiful thing” says Lilla with a smile “and we’re excited to be a part of it by moving Trenz from the North Perth shopping plaza onto the main strip”.

The move marks an exciting expansion for Trenz, now a North Perth icon, and also catering for

all your spray tanning needs. Understanding that no two complexions are the same, Trenz can personalise every tan to your skin tone, seasonal event and even choice of wardrobe using only Paraben and alcohol free tanning solutions such as Technotan to give you a natural looking sun-kissed glow. “The benefi ts are numerous - not only does it give you a radiant and healthy glow but it also reduces the appearance of stretch marks and varicose veins without the damaging effects of UVA” says Lilla. “In addition, it’s quick and convenient, it takes only 10 minutes, and the result is fl awless without nasty streaks or orange residue”.

Trenz welcome old and new customers to a boutique salon experience that has it all: proven experience topped off with contemporary styling skills to give both men and women a modern look.

independent Perth Voice. by DAVID BELL

JAMES PEART will have another tilt at the Vincent council by-election, after narrowly missing out in October ’s eight-way race.

A south ward vacancy was created when Cr John Carey was elected mayor.

The nearest two contenders were former Labor adviser Katrina Montaut with 907 votes and Mr Peart with 828.

Mr Peart, who’d coordinated volunteers in Vincent’s eff orts to get fully merged with Perth, says he wants to run again because he had a great time working with the council on the campaign.

“It was a really positive experience, everyone working towards a common goal: The councillors, staff , and volunteers,” he says, having become a regular sight around town on his campaign banner-laden bike.

The urban planner says one key priority is to make sure Vincent’s new bike plan works for pedestrians too. He says there are some easy fixes that can be made while putting in the paths to make sure pedestrians have an easier time getting around.

He also wants to set up a schools network which would work like “a super P&C” so schools can meet regularly with council to discuss issues like parking and traffi c management.

Mr Peart says a greening plan to plant more trees around town has to be followed with an eye to detail, so that walking to town centres doesn’t involve a sweltering march through sun-baked terrain (an oft-heard criticism of Beaufort Street).

He says a detail-oriented councillor is important as he’s heard criticisms from locals that sometimes elected members don’t understand the intricacies of policy.

“One of the things I’m keen on is being there in the council meetings to say: ‘Does everyone understand the policies?

“I’ve seen it in council meetings that people haven’t got their heads around it.

“From my experience—and this was a

• James Peart with his campaign bike, with son Ludo and partner Rebecca Mackay. Photo by Jeremy Dixon

few years ago—but there was a clear lack of understanding of the heights policy for Oxford Street.”

Mr Peart says when staff recommend items for approval that are contrary to regular policy, there should be detailed explanation of why.

He is not a member of any political party but says he can get along with everyone, from the Labor-aligned mayor to the local state Liberal MP.

“Last week I had a beer with John Carey, this week I had a coff ee with Eleni Evangel,” he says.

Mr Carey has endorsed Mr Peart for council.

“I think he’s an outstanding candidate and this is based on a number of reasons: Firstly he brings experience and expertise

KATRINA MONTAUT has expressed doubt about running for council again, despite being fi rst runner-up in October.

Ms Montaut, who worked for ex-Perth MP John Hyde, says she’s been approached to run again but isn’t keen as she isn’t part of the inner-circle on council: “I don’t know how easy it would be to eff ect much change given that I’m not in the loop that’s been created.”

Mayor John Carey says there is no inner-circle: “I fi nd those sorts of comments just bizarre. We encourage diversity of views on council, we encourage debate, but we have council working together as a team.”

as an urban planner so he’s going to hit the ground running. He’s not going to need to learn the ropes, he has that experience, and given that many of the issues we’re facing regarding density, zoning and the new town planning scheme, I think he’s a great choice.

“Secondly if you look at all the candidates that ran at the last election, he was the standout in terms of his commitment and energy for the ‘Vincent all-in, one-in’ campaign.”

Mr Carey says in other parts of the country mayors will back candidates of their own party, but “that’s not the case for me: James is independent”.

He says his endorsement is based on Mr Peart’s “energy and experience” and adds “I don’t have any expectations or promises about how [Mr Peart] is going to vote”.

MY alfresco dinner guests refused to believe the opera coming over the fence was live, the

sound was so glorious, and the volume off the richter scale.

“It really is the opera singer from a couple of houses away,” I insisted as Penny Shaw continued to belt out an aria for the birthday boy next door.

Shaw and DivaLicious songbird Fiona Cooper Smyth will be dampening their volume a tad when they kick off this year’s Perth Fringe Festival with their new Hollywood-style show An Intimate Evening with DivaLicious.

“You sing quite diff erently when mic’d up, you don’t have to belt it out,” Shaw says.

The show is a mix of comedy, classic opera and movie songs with a bit of an opera twist.

“[But] we don’t over-opera them,” Shaw says.

The pair had no trouble shortening an aria they’d thought too long for today’s audience, raised on fast-paced movies and TV.

“Does an aria need to be six minutes

when it could be three?” Shaw asks, adding: “We are easily bored and like to move along.”

The show includes music from The Shawshank Redemption and the recent Tin-Tin movie.

DivaLicious has been described as “great wads of comedy slapped between two divas”, and has been wowing non-opera and opera lovers in recent years, including making it to the fi nals of Australia’s Got Talent in 2012.

But it’s not all been smooth sailing, with the pair rival sopranos in the WA Opera chorus (interestingly, they have similar backgrounds, and also emigrated from the UK the same year).

“There are only limited parts in the chorus,” Shaw says.

Now the best of mates they ham up their rivalry and initially stand-off with a miaowing cat duet in their new show.

“Fiona tells the story of something I said, but I have no recollection of it,” Shaw says.

There’s plenty of comedy in a show that off ers behind the scene glimpses and dressing room gossip.

“There are two sides to us, the poignant angelic side and the devilish dueling side,” Shaw says.

An Intimate Evening with DivaLicious is on at the Spiegeltent, Perth Cultural Centre, January 25 to 29.

Tickets $25 at www.fringeworld.com.au or call Fiona on 0438 933 635.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)No matter how hard you push your case, there are going to be equal and opposite

forces pushing back. The most productive outcome is a growing general sense of mutual respect. Nobody is going to fall into the trap of being a pushover. You might be surprised by your own moves.

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)The Moon sets you up for fl ow. You are slipping down the river of life while others

are clambering over rocks and ridges. As you slip effortlessly through heavy traffi c, be aware that this is a gift of circumstance. You still need to keep your eyes open to prevent any snags.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)Mercury moves out of earthy Capricorn and into airy Aquarius this

week. Life picks you up on a thermal and takes you back to the airy heights where you feel comfortable. The general atmosphere is one of creative friction. Diffi culties arouse inspiration, not discombobulation.

CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22)When you look around you and see that no-one is going to budge, no matter

how hard you state your case, the option of going fi shing looks very good. Even if you don’t do it literally, do it metaphorically. When life is not being logical, live it poetically. It’s ok to choose ease.

LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)Slowly you are starting to make sense of the events of the last few weeks.

There is some kind of order underneath the surface after all. This realisation opens your heart – and when your heart is open, others feel subliminally invited to open theirs too and come close. Find your smile.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)Sometimes all the foresight in the world can’t stop events from playing out the way

they are going to play out. Rather than pull your hair out at the stupidity, be on hand to offer kindness and guidance when it is required. Stay light in this. There’s no need to wear hobnailed boots.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)Mars is helping you to hold your ground. Even though he’s anchoring you in your

gut and giving self-respect, others aren’t shifting from their positions either. There’s no need to enter into any confl ict, no matter how tempting. Create something special from all this shared strength.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)The moon in Taurus momentarily illuminates your beauty, strength

and wisdom. Such moments of grace surface when we let go of our resistance and relax into life as it is. Use this break in the weather to remember that there is always light and open skies behind the cloud cover.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)It won’t pay to get too attached to any emotional funkiness that happens to

overtake you. Come out of it as quickly as you can. The more fl uid your feelings, the faster happiness kicks in. With Jupiter in Cancer, life is giving you an object lesson in the creative currents of emotion.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)With four planets in Capricorn, you aren’t going to be prevented from making your

mark. Make it a beautiful, transformative, elegant mark. Bring whatever it is that you have been creating, out into the public eye. If it’s real, it’s bound to spark a degree of controversy. Roll with that.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)Mercury arrives later in the week, lifting your spirits. This revitalises your sense of where

all this is going. It got a bit muddy in there for a while. Mercury, on a good day, is the planet of pure insight and awareness. Dare to take the veil of borrowed knowledge from your eyes.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)You are the refuge that others are seeking. It’s not that you are doing

anything particularly special. It’s more the way that you are not doing anything and relaxing in your being, that is attractive to those who are habituated with stress. Be the place of rest that others need.

OLIVER TWIST and the orphans sang Food Glorious Food in the

musical version of Dickens’ classic novel. (Oliver Twist and the Orphans? Good name for a boy band).

Veggie Mama, in Mt Lawley, is to vegetarians what steak and pudding must have been to the hungry mites in the London poor house: Heaven.

Since turning vegetarian I have never been surrounded by such choice, and not a morsel of meat to be seen.

And all of it so healthy I could feel my cholesterol plummetting.

Dancing from foot to foot at such luxuriousness I gazed at glistening savoury pastries, various patties and mouthwatering salads in the cold display cabinet, before taking in the pastas, curries, stuff ed spuds (with rennet-free cheese), casseroles and colourful ratatouille in the hot buff et.

My lunch companion is a Veggie Mama regular, but she wasn’t much help as she reckons everything is great.

Playing for time I ordered a deliciously fresh beetroot, apple and celery juice ($6.50).

My mind clarifi ed, it was the coconut curry and a serve of ratatouille for me.

At the risk of coconut overload I added a coconut coleslaw—and a broccoli salad. All up this generous serve of hot and cold food came to a very budget-conscious $15.95.

FOODJENNY D’ANGERFFFFFFJE

My companion ordered a similar dish, but with a vegetable casserole with her ratatouille.

The coconut curry was great, creamy, moist and fl avoursome, but the ratatouille was the real winner, the best I’ve ever had, wonderfully oily, with a beautiful tomato-tartness that lingered on the tongue.

The trouble with dining with a nutritionist/fi tness nut is the guilt factor if you over-do it, vis a vis eating.

So I surreptitiously grabbed a couple of raspberry tarts to go ($6.50) and thoroughly enjoyed the sweet creamy custard and sharp berries with my extremely non-judgemental loved one in the privacy of my own home.

The owners of Veggie Mama started out 25 years ago with The Granary in Barrack Street, Perth, off ering customers the chance to enjoy “yummy” vegetarian food.

Veggie Mama is the same premise, just diff erent premises.

Although today the food is organic and locally sourced where possible, the coff ee Fairtrade, the kitchen strictly kosher, no food is fried and there are plenty of gluten-free and vegan options.

IT’S not often we ordinary folk get the chance to look down on the royal family, but from this 15th

fl oor eyrie you’ll have a birds’s eye view when the Queen, or her heir, next stay at Government House.

Or you could check out the comings and goings at the Duxton Hotel—where Prince Harry allegedly stayed on his recent whistlestop tour.

As a republican I’d be spending all day on the balcony looking at the magnifi cent gardens of the governor’s backyard, backdropped by the river—you can even see the cranes at Fremantle Port from here.

Kings ParkOr gazing up to Kings Park, and

the Barrack Street arch, and when the Elizabeth Quay comes on line, you’ll be eye-balling that as well, perhaps grumbling about how much it cost.

Condor Tower started life as a commercial building before being added on to and transformed into apartments.

The result is a mix of fantastic dwellings from deluxe penthouses to two-bedroom apartments such as this.

Mind-blowingThe foyer is a mind-blowing

experience, a sweeping space of chrome, black tiles and glass, a vibrant collection of modern art, and a magnifi cent life-size silver gum tree, complete with gumnuts. Even the lift has funky art.

The living spaces are open-plan, with a wall of glass onto the balcony to take in the views from any vantage.

ESTATE JENNY D’ANGEREEJ Perth at

The well-designed compact kitchen has black granite on the island bench, white caesar stone and stainless steel on the wall bench and two large pantry cupboards.

Both bedrooms are double, with ensuite (checkout the stylish marble vanities) while the main has walk-in robes too.

For these hot days and nights there’s a pool, complete with waterfall, on the roof.

And to ensure you look toned in your togs, there’s a fully equipped gym.

Perth is literally laid at your feet like a carpet, and you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to entertainment, all within walking distance.

Ensuring the car spends most of its time in the secure parking bay.
