JASPER COUNTY CONSERVATION
Get Kids OutsideBy Nathan Unsworth
I am only in my mid-twenties, but I have no-tice a change in what kids do for fun during the summer months. As I drive around town, it is a rare occasion to see groups of kids riding bicycles, playing a backyard game of kickball, or running through the sprinkler. When I think back to my childhood, I cannot remember a week that went by that we did not do all of those activities. Granted, I also lived in a town of 900 people that provided no entertainment for chil-dren (we did not even have a swimming pool). Therefore, it was up to us to create our own fun. There are a number of things that infl uence the lack of playing outside by children. Here are a few of my ideas that have the biggest impact: video games, over protective parents that set boundaries that do not allow kids the freedom to have fun outside, too many structured activi-ties for youth, and society’s tolerance of chil-dren not playing outside. For this week’s con-servation column, I have created a top ten list that all children should do during the summer months. Some are things they can do in their own backyard while others might take a little planning. Nevertheless, these activities will get kids outside and enjoying the great outdoors!
1.Enjoy a hot summer day by setting up a sprinkler, having a water gun fi ght, or a water balloon fi ght. 2.Go camping… in a tent in the backyard or at one of your favorite Jasper County Conserva-tion campgrounds.3.Grab your fi shing poles and head to a local fi shing spot. Nothing is more exciting for a child then to see their bobber go underwater and to reel in the “big” fi sh. 4.Try a new summer recreational activity like rollerblading, kayaking, canoeing, archery, golfi ng, etc. 5.Take a ride out to the country at dusk and look at the stars. You will be amazed at how many more you can see outside the city limits. You might even want to make a trip to the Ash-ton Observatory on a Saturday night, too!6.Take a trip to a local zoo…It is educational, fun, and memorable for a child. 7.Find a good tree and climb it!8.Play in mud puddles after a summertime thunderstorm.9.Go on an insect hunt and see how many creepy crawlers you can fi nd. 10.Sit around a campfi re one evening, but
alwaysremember the S’MORES.
