As the world is heading towards a more advanced mobile network technology, 5G deployments are anticipated globally. The advancement is necessary to fuel the increasing data speeds and Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure.

Currently, our 4G network is enhanced to LTE-Advanced and LTE-Advanced Pro to cater the needs for more data speeds. The massive digitilization process is still ongoing and according to Ericsson Mobility Report, LTE is expected to become the dominant mobile access technology in 2018, and will likely reach 5 billion subscriptions by the end of 2022.

Whether it’s to manage personal accounts better, or to up your marketing game, be familiar with these time-saving hacks to optimize social media usage.

S O C I A L M E D I A L I F E

If you have saved a lot of images on Instagram, it’s a good idea to avoid the visually appealing clutter by saving photos in specific folders. On your profile, click the bookmark tab (the top-right tab above your photos) to view saved images. Then click “Collections” tab and start creating your folder. To move saved pictures to the designated folder, simply click “Add to Collection”. Now instead of having to scroll through your saved photos, you can stack them in specific categories like “Food” or “Favourite places”.

If you already have your favourite Instagram filters, perhaps you knew that you can’t apply a filter without having to post the photo. Luckily, if you want to use Instagram merely for the filters but are not ready to post the photo yet, you can just publish it while your phone is on airplane mode. But make sure that you have turned on the “Save Original Photo” in your settings.

So now, turn on your airplane mode, and like you normally do on Instagram, upload the photo, edit it and click “Share”. The upload will fail, but the edited photo will be in your phone’s gallery.

If a comment on your Facebook page doesn’t contain any banned words but you would like to delete it, the best way is to use the hide option. Deleting comments will only trigger the trolls to comment even more. By hiding it, only the trolls and their followers can see the comment, but the public won’t. You can simply do so by clicking at the top-right corner on the trolls’ comment.

If you want your snap to look extra vibrant and use filters like the temperature and geotag at the same time, simply swipe to add one filter. Next, while holding down one finger on your screen, slide another finger to add another filter. Now your snaps tell more stories than ever.

Long-winded stories can still be conveyed on Twitter by using a chain of tweets, or thread. All you have to do is reply to your own tweet, but make sure to remove the “@” mention to your name so you don’t look like you are talking to yourself. To keep the readers’ eyes on your tweets, end each tweet with some kind of teasers, like an ellipsis or a cliffhanger. After this, readers who see the first tweet or any tweet in the chain can read the full story by simply clicking “View Conversation” option. This tip comes in really handy when you need to elaborate on an issue.

If you run a Facebook page and want to get rid of some terrible haters, you can ban the comments that use specific negative words. In your Page Settings, go to “Page Moderation” and add words that you want to ban from your page like “unfollowing” or “unlike”. When a banned word is used, the comment will be hidden from the general public, but still visible to the person who commented and his/her friends. Although it doesn’t ban the comment entirely, at least you can reduce the negative vibes.

Is dual-lens smartphone camera really a thing right now? Importantly, having two cameras on the smartphone enables it to capture more details and produce a better quality picture. It also makes it easier to snap a picture with a blurred background and to get better pictures when zooming in. What is more,

dual-lens cameras will push the envelope for more impressive snapshots of reality!

Dual camera phones are made out of two cameras made up of a primary camera and a secondary camera. The primary camera does more or less the same work as it normally does in a typical single-lens smartphone while the secondary camera normally has either of these two features. The first is to add clarity

to the image captured through better contrast offered by a monochrome lens while the second provides a telephoto lens to enhance the zooming feature. Depending on the setting, one camera can be used to take the picture while the other captures the depth of field to produce a more professional looking

image, almost similar to those captured with a DSLR. With a lot to offer for smartphone photography, here are the top choices for dual-camera smartphones.

iPhone 7 Plus Price starts from RM3,799

Released in October 2016, the iPhone 7 Plus was launched together with iPhone 7 but with the addition of a second 12-megapixel telephoto lens that allows for up to 2x optical zoom. The second lens, which is absent in the standard iPhone 7, offers double the focal length to act like a 2x multiplier; making far-away subjects look closer in the frame compared to most wide-angle cameras.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Price starts from RM3,999

Samsung Note 8 features dual-lens technology, and this feature alone will definitely trigger many photography inclined smartphone users to give it a very close look indeed. The dual-cameras will feature six-element lenses optical image stabilization combined to provide 3x optical zoom. If you’ve ever wanted to get a close-up shot at a concert using only your phone, this might be your handset of choice.

Hydrogen One Price starts from RM1,195

The professional-camera company RED also announced plans to launch its first smartphone, the Hydrogen One in early 2018. However, its dual-camera system is still functionally unclarified and it is anyone’s guess if whether RED will utilize the setup for zooming, wide-angle shots, monochrome images, or something totally new. The camera module at the back is quite big and the phone over all looks rugged and tough.

Nokia 8 Price starts from RM3,030

HMD Global is also apparently working on its first flagship smartphone Nokia 8 that could give tough competition to its opponent with dual rear cameras. The dual rear camera is setup with Carl Zeiss lens optics stacked vertically. HMD is also betting big on Nokia 8’s “bothies” mode - the ability to capture images and videos from front and rear cameras at the same time.

LG G5 Price starts from RM1,999

The LG G5 is the first LG smartphone with a dual-camera setup. With an F1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization, the main 16MP module is fundamentally similar to the G4 in terms of specification and provides a 78-degree angle of view which is not much different from most current high-end smartphone cameras LG is accomplishing something very surprising with the G5, because each lens can shoot independently, and both are free to be used with any of the camera features available on the G5.

1. How did you start your career in broadcasting?

I joined the company as an announcer and music executive in 1996. I still remember how excited I was with the thought of embarking onto something revolutionary in the radio broadcasting industry. It was also a timely opportunity as I wanted to make a transition from the previous job that involved a lot of late nights for my daughter, Larissa who was just a baby then. 20 years has passed, and I have gained so many great friends whom I can proudly call family.

2. The biggest challenge you encountered in your career and how did you overcome it?

It was a difficult decision to leave Astro when I was offered to serve at iM4U in 2012. I was the CEO of iM4U for a year and returned to Astro in 2013.

3. Celebrity that you consider as icon?

I enjoy fitness, hence definitely Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

4. If you could travel back in time, what would you say to the 10 years old you?

Learn a skill or trade when you are young…and there will be this one thing called the computer that is going to revolutionize everything!

5. Your first handphone was…

A Nokia.

6. You’re embarrassed to admit it, but you watch… (TV series/movie)

A lot of Disney Movies.

7. If you could let loose on your social media for one day, you would post…

Somehow I don’t think it would be any different from what I’m doing now as I mainly focus on health, fitness and motivation.

8. You’re an Apple or Android fanboy/fangirl?

Apple!

9. Five of your favorite apps that you must have in your smartphone?

I have a few. I love Snapseed, definitely a great photo editing tool; Waze as I am bad with directions and my Pacer app which I use to track my runs.

Data. It is important to get your facts right.

11. First thing you check on your smartphone when you wake up in the morning?

My social feed and football scores.

12. Which would you choose? A phone with awesome camera or long-lasting battery?

Definitely a longer-lasting battery as you can always edit your photos.

10 Q U A R T E R T H R E E 2 0 1 7

The first Malaysian Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) female fighter, Ann Osman is not settling for a mediocre path. The MMA fighter and businesswoman has some losses and wins throughout her career, but her fierce array of fighting skills is what has made her the role model in what she does.

A N N O S M A N , M M A F I G H T E R

After getting my Diploma in Computer Science, I worked in various companies, mostly in the Sales & Marketing line including Astro Radio and a travel company. When I first made my Pro MMA debut, I was working as a Business Development Manager for iProperty.com Malaysia. I left my job the year after my debut to focus on my fight career as well as to start my own travel company which is Travel Rite Tours Sdn Bhd today.

I first got involved in MMA after my coach, AJ “Pyro” Lias (also ONE Championship fighter) invited me to his small MMA group class after I have been training Muay Thai with him. There weren’t many other women training MMA at the time however after joining my first class, I was just hooked! AJ didn’t have his own gym at the time however I would always come for training every chance I get. Soon after, I competed in my first Amateur MMA competition which was in Petaling Jaya (Sept 2012). I lost my first Amateur MMA fight but it drew a much bigger interest in me – to compete more. I started competing in other Muay Thai fights and later on that year, I was

C O N N E C T E D

signed by ONE Championship to fight on their Singapore card in Oct 2013. The rest is history.

In general, I train at least 2 hours a day everyday. Training becomes more intense and longer when I am preparing for a fight. My coach always tell me to “keep calm and dig deep”. It has helped me both in and out the cage.

I am very passionate in what I do and that itself becomes my drive. On days that I feel low, I take a breather and visualize myself achieving my dream and my goals. Visualizing the end result always keeps me motivated to keep pursuing my goals.

Outside of the fighting arena, I am very active on both Instagram and Facebook. I enjoy sharing my experiences and a bit of my daily life with others however I do try not to go overboard with social media by posting too much personal details. I love staying connected with old friends and of course making new ones from within the industry as well. On Facebook, I enjoy articles and videos shared. On Instagram, I love following other MMA fighters and Martial Art practitioners, fitness advocates and inspiring entrepreneurs.

To CFM readers, believe and hustle – that’s what it takes to achieve anything you want in life. Believe in yourself, in the things you do and your goals. I always tell my Sales staff, “If you don’t believe in the product, how are you going to sell them?”. That applies to you too. If you don’t believe in yourself and your talent, it’s a dead end from the get go. Believing is not always achieving if you don’t put in the work so earn it and work hard for it.

H E A D I N G T O W A R D ST H E F U T U R E : 5 G

Right now, most of us are comfortable with our 4G speed. As the data speed is good enough, and not to mention the availability of a multitude of different data plans that put us in dilemma, it is kind of hard to imagine anything that’s faster, but also cheaper. So it’s a no-brainer that the mobile world is all hype about 5G now. In the future, a speed that peaks more than 10 Gbps (Gigabits per second) won’t be unheard of.

5G is the fifth generation of cellular networking. Here is a breakdown to compare it with the previous ones:

• 1G was all about voice (analog cellular)• 2G, which is also the first generation

of digital cellular technology, enabled voice and texting

• 3G was about voice + texting + data, and at this point, we were able to reach speeds from 200 Kbps to a few Mbps

• 4G technology is faster, and the networks are currently evolving to LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) and LTE-Advanced Pro (LTE-A Pro)

LTE-A Pro stunningly offers data speeds of 3 Gbps, but full commercial usage of LTE-A Pro is still some time off. According to Deloitte Global, it will be commercially available by the end of 2017, and not all carriers are going to offer it. But simply put, the world is currently taking the necessary pre-5G steps.

WHEN IS IT COMING?

There isn’t an official definition of the 5G technology standards just yet, so the shift won’t happen that quickly. According

I S S U E O F T H E Q UA R T E R

to Ericsson Mobility Report, the adoption rate of 5G mobile broadband is expected to be similar to that of LTE, and rollout will commence in major metro areas, reaching around 15 percent population coverage by 2022. 5G revolution is more than just offering faster data speeds to your phone. Soon, devices in our homes will be interconnected, and everything on the road will be talking – driverless cars will interact with each other to offer better safety. This kind of information travels in small packets of data, but it needs to be done instantly. And here is the advantage of 5G – it offers very low latency (the time taken for a packet data to travel from one point to another). So as you can see, incorporating 5G technology involves massive infrastructure upgrades.

IS 5G HAPPENING IN MALAYSIA?

In May 2017, Celcom Axiata Berhad partnered with communication technologies provider, Ericsson to conduct its 5G technology trial. Both companies have signed a 5G memorandum of understanding (MoU) earlier in February 2017.

The trial was the first to be conducted on the 28GHz band in South East Asia. It also featured 5G Radio Prototypes from Ericsson, achieving a peak throughput up to 18 Gbps and latency as low as 3 milliseconds. Both companies also showed futuristic 5G uses during the trial – robotic control, connected environment, virtual reality, Internet of Things (IoT) and more.

Previously, Celcom also announced its Lightning Fast LTE service, which is based on LTE-A Pro network, that has been available in August. To enjoy speeds of up to 400 Mbps offered, users will have to upgrade their mobile devices to the latest models that support 4x4 MIMO (multiple-input and multiple-output) like the Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+, for instance.

As the inevitable digitalisation and continuing evolution in the communications industry is growing, so is the demand of the consumers in the country. So far, the future of 5G in Malaysia seems bright and hopeful. What we can expect now is things are going to be a whole lot faster.

Security has become such an important aspect when it comes to owning a mobile device. Regardless of your preference, be it Android or iPhone, users have become rapidly informed in all matters involving security. Android might be an open source system, but third-party developers are coming out with apps that can take on Apple’s security system at any time of the day. iPhone users, on the other hand, can rest assured of Apple’s heavily secured

and encrypted database. But the onus is still in the hands of the users to ensure their data and privacy are safely secured.

Several of the basic functions of a good phone security app these days are listed as having an antivirus, device and data theft prevention, intelligent diagnosis (booster and cleaner), and VPN connection, to name a few. But which one is the best app for you? Check out these reviews

and decide for yourself.

The Cyber Security Awareness Month was initiated in the U.S in 2004. It was known as the National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) and celebrated every October. This 2017, the NCSAM will enter its 14th year in the U.S.

For this year, NCSAM will be celebrated with these weekly themes:

Since a few years ago, the Cyber Security Awareness month received global recognition, and countries like Canada, Norway and other European countries started to observe the month as well. Basically, Cyber Security Awareness Month is held to inform and raise awareness on the importance of cyber security.

Although cybercrime is not common in Malaysia as it is in other countries, it’s worth to know at the very least the simple steps towards a safer use of the internet. The global time-space barriers are blurring and soon Malaysians will also be experiencing the explosion of digital interconnectivity. So it is crucial that each of us play a role in making the internet a safer place.

Now if you’re into travel photos but not that dedicated to travel with a DSLR, then fret not. With your decent smartphone and a little practice, your photos can still shine its way on that Instagram feed.

By capturing photos horizontally, it gives extra room for you to play with framing. It gives a wider view than the vertical orientation and compliments the image of wide landscapes, like the vast plain of green grass or a wide river. This doesn’t mean that vertical orientation isn’t good though, but it limits the frame. Use a tall photographic orientation when you want to amplify a subject’s height, or up and down movements.

U S E B U R S T M O D E T O C A P T U R E T H E P E R F E C T M O M E N T

We can’t predict opportunistic events and that’s when the burst mode comes in handy. Picturesque scenes of birds flying outside the window, fireworks or water splashes call for the just-in-time shot. By using burst mode you’ll be able to capture multiple photos in seconds, and then choose the image you like the most from the stacks of photos before discarding the rest. It’s also useful when you want to capture the effects of windy conditions on a subject – grass, clothing or hair. This way, everything seems natural and candidly.

Not only you get the chance to experience nature’s beauty without so many people around, but the soft light during sunrise can enhance your photos. You won’t also be dealing with direct rays from the sun so harsh shadows on objects can be avoided. In addition, taking photos during sunrise can set your photos different from the common ones since the lighting is so on point.

A feature that a smartphone camera lacks compared to a DSLR is the depth of field, making photos with lovely blur hard to achieve. Faking a blur by using apps will only make things worse. To create emphasis on a subject, use a good composition.

T H E R U L E O F T H I R D S

This is the golden rule for a good composition. And almost all smartphones have this particular function on its camera (gridlines). It divides the picture up to 9 equal squares and you can place the main subject on the interception of lines. This is one effective way to create emphasis on a certain object.

Sunrise and sunset can really help make pictures look spectacular with the heavenly lighting. One of the ways to harness the mood in sunset is to use any object or person as silhouettes. Not only silhouettes make very interesting elements, they also give a sense of story and depth.

Horizontal photo gives a wider view. Vertical orientation is good to amplify height.

Here’s what it looks like if taken vertically.
