Do You Know The Five Signs of Mental Distress?Nearly one in every five people, or 42.5 million American adults, has a mental health condition.

Half of all lifetime cases of mental disorders begin by age 14. Often our friends, neighbors, co-workers, and even family members are suffering emotionally, but they don’t recognize the symptoms or won’t ask for help. Here are some signs that they may be experiencing mental distress or emotional pain and may need help:

1. Their personality changes. You may notice sudden or gradual changes in the way someone typically behaves. He or she may act in ways that don’t seem to fit the person’s values, or the person may just seem different.

2. They seem uncharacteristically angry, anxious, agitated, or moody. You may notice the person has more frequent problems controlling his or her temper and seems irritable or unable to calm down. People in more extreme situations of this kind may be unable to sleep or may explode in anger at a minor problem.

3. They withdraw or isolate themselves.Someone who used to be socially engaged may pull away from family and friends, or stop taking part in activities he or she used to enjoy. In more severe cases, the person may start failing to attend work or school. Not to be confused with the behavior of someone who is more introverted, this sign is marked by a change in someone’s typical sociability, as when someone pulls away from the social support he or she typically has.

4. They stop taking care of themselves and may engage in risky behavior. You may notice a change in the person’s level of personal care or an act of poor judgment on his or her part. For instance, someone may let his or her personal hygiene deteriorate, or the person may start abusing alcohol or illicit substances, or engage in other self-destructive behavior that may alienate loved ones.5. They seem overcome with hopelessness and overwhelmed by their circumstances.Have you noticed someone who used to be optimistic and now can’t find anything to be hopeful about? That person may be suffering from extreme or prolonged grief, or feelings of worthlessness or guilt. People in this situation may say that the world would be better off without them, suggesting suicidal thoughts. If you or someone you know displays these signs, talk with your personal health care provider or call Mayo Clinic Health System - Franciscan Healthcare Behavioral Health Services at 608-392-9555.

It’s that time of the month and you’re feeling some painful bloating and cramping. Sometimes, the pain makes it difficult to perform normal household, job, or school-related activities for a few days during each menstrual cycle. Although some pain during your period is normal, excessive pain is not.

When to call your doctorIf the pain is unbearable and self-care treatments (see orange box) don’t provide relief, talk with your primary health care provider. He or she may prescribe additional medications. Also, call your health care provider if:» You had an IUD placed more than 3 months ago» You pass blood clots or have other symptoms with the pain» Your pain occurs at times other than menstruation, begins more than five days before your period, or continues after your period is over» Treatments do not relieve your pain after 3 months

When heavy bleeding affects your lifestyle One in five women experiences heavy or frequent menstrual periods, which may greatly hamper her quality of life. There are many treatments to correct this problem. One solution many women benefit from is endometrial ablation. The procedure is intended for women ages 30-49 who experience frequent or heavy bleeding, and who do not plan to have additional children. The endometrial lining, which is the source for bleeding, is destroyed during the procedure, and most women experience relief immediately, without a hysterectomy or hormones. The procedure is often offered in the day surgery setting. To see if you would benefit from endometrial ablation, talk to your primary health care provider.

Don’t be a victim of “phishing”Phishing calls are designed to utilize a small amount of information to bully and/or coerce personal information from the call recipients. The phishers often identify themselves with names or titles that sound legitimate; they ask the member to confirm certain personal information that the phishers can then use to access personal accounts (both financial and health-related).

Health Tradition supports our members’ wellness with outreach efforts to help eligible members manage their chronic illnesses such as COPD, diabetes, etc., but our callers identify themselves as calling from the “Health Tradition Health Plan CareEnhance Program.” They are also not aggressively trying to get members to enroll – they are simply offering support to better manage members’ health. Being the victim of such calls can be quite unsettling, and we appreciate being told about the calls. At Health Tradition, we will never initiate a call to confirm membership ID numbers or financial information. If we receive or are returning a call, we may confirm a piece or two of information, but the contact would always be initiated by a member. If you have a doubt as to the validity of a phone call from Health Tradition, hang up and call us at 1-877-832-1823.
