The City of Amsterdam offers free language courses for new residents who wish to learn Dutch, as well as residents who have difficulties with reading and writing. Living and working in Amsterdam is much easier when you can read, write and speak Dutch.

Am I eligible for free Dutch lessons?

Getting started• I am not currently claiming benefits There are three ways to enrol in a free language course: • Online, by going to the website to www.amsterdam.nl/taal>Aanmelden Taalcursus. • Come to one of the walk-in information centres. You can find the address of your

nearest centre at www.amsterdam.nl/taal>Taalwijzers en inloopspreekuren taal. • By phone. Call 14 020. A member of staff will help you.

Who is this language course for?There are courses for: • Beginners • People who speak Dutch as a first or second language • People who have difficulties with reading and writing • Advanced students: those who have some prior knowledge and wish to improve their

Dutch.

When can I start? There are four start dates for the course every year. Each course has a duration of six months. You will be expected to attend two three-hour lessons each week, which can take place either in the morning, afternoon or evening (starting at 09:00, 13:00 or 19:00.) You will also practise your Dutch for around three to four hours a week by taking part in an activity.

I do not have to fulfil any civic integration requirements

Are you subject tothe civic integrationrequirements? If so, then you must complete all civic integration requirementsbefore you can apply for free language lessons.

Expats are not eligible for free language lessons.

Practising at school and in the city The quickest way to learn Dutch is to speak it as often as you can. Obviously you will be expected to speak Dutch during the lessons but you should also try to do so in your everyday life. There are various activities which allow you to practise your Dutch. The language school will help you to choose one that meets your needs. They include: • Voluntary work • Sports • A traineeship with a company • Helping at your children’s school.

Courses

Reading and writing Dutch as a foreign language Dutch is not your first language. You cannot yet read or write in Dutch, although you may be able to hold a simple conversation. This course will help you to improve your spoken Dutch and to practise reading and writing.

Dutch for beginners Dutch is not your first language and you have little or no prior experience. In this course you will learn basic vocabulary so that you can hold a simple conversation. You will also start to read and write in Dutch.

Dutch for social participation You wish to improve your Dutch, perhaps because you wish to take a more active role in the community or support your children’s development and education. This course will help you do so.

Dutch for work You wish to improve your Dutch, because it will help you at work or improve your chances of finding a job. This course will help you do so.

Dutch (as a foreign language) and personal financial administration Dutch is not your first language. This course focuses on your personal administration and will help you with tasks such as reading official correspondence and completing your tax return.

Dutch for advanced students You have a reasonable command of Dutch. This course will help you to improve your knowledge.

Reading and writing Dutch as a first language Dutch is your first language but you experience some difficulty in reading and writing. This course will help you improve your skills.

Dutch (as a first language) and personal administration Dutch is your first language but you experience some difficulty in reading and writing. This course will help you improve your skills so that you can understand important letters and do the household administration.
