Free EntranceONE WEEKEND OVER 300 PROPERTIES AND EVENTS
European Heritage Open Days (EHOD) is a key event for this EYCH year, as it provides a taste of the value of our historic environment while ensuring you can enjoy exploring our heritage. The theme for EHOD this year is “The Art of Sharing”, as heritage buildings are shaped by history and people and
their authenticity is derived through the connections with community development. Our theme for 2018 links with the theme of EYCH to encourage you to share your story and deepen the connection between people and heritage, and build a legacy of increased public engagement.
Our historic environment supports our prosperity, strengthens our society and shapes our character. Which means that by treasuring our past, we can enrich our future. These themes provide a focus for the European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH) 2018. In Northern Ireland, historic environment organisations are using the year to provide a platform to develop what we do, strengthening the sector and building for the future.

This year European Heritage Open Days will take place on 8 and 9 September. Over 360 heritage buildings and events are opening during the weekend FREE OF CHARGE. Not all of the event and property details are in this brochure, please visit our website: www.discovernorthernireland.com/ehod
You can also experience our rich heritage through living history events, enhanced experiences and various talks at our State Care sites. Investment in heritage supports business growth and increases tourism. Appreciation and enjoyment of heritage can improve health and wellbeing and may boost cultural and economic regeneration. The reuse of old buildings and structures is crucial to
sustainable development and heritage preservation, and it is a great way to engage the private sector!
EHOD are a great success due to the efforts of a wide range of communities and individuals which help deliver a largely volunteer-led programme. I would, therefore, like to take this opportunity to thank the many individual owners, groups and volunteers who allow access to these wonderful buildings which capture our heritage. Without their enthusiasm and generosity these weekend events would not be possible.

The Art of Sharing
Many events have been organised to share our
heritage stories in new ways. 2018 is the year
of infrastructure and we have partnered with
ICE (Institute of Civil Engineering) to bring you
some new and innovative events sharing some
of Northern Ireland’s engineering heritage.
Sharing heritage stories of our buildings and
their connections to locations and people
through talks, tours, exhibitions, craft, art
and performance or screen, we have an
excellent programme of events for you to
enjoy this weekend. Some highlights are
detailed below:
EHOD 2018 will be a highlight of the European Year of Cultural Heritage. Uniquely placed to celebrate our shared connections, EHOD this year aligns with the European-wide theme “The ART of SHARING”. Cultural heritage is evident in our buildings, our monuments and our natural environment in our villages, towns and cities. It is the structure of our lives and communities.

Historic Monuments of NI in state careWhat is an historic monument? It is hard to give an answer that covers the sites that are in State Care and listed on the map attached. Some are grand structures, surviving today as imposing cliff-top ruins, mysterious settings of stones or great earthworks. Some were everyday places where ordinary things happened – farmsteads, sites of industry or places of worship. Some are amongst the oldest structures to survive in the modern landscape such as elaborate tomb stones over 5,000 years old and of course some are from much more recent times such as Martello Tower, 1812 and Grey Point Fort, 1907.
All of the historic monuments listed on this
map are in State Care and are buildings or
structures that were made and used in the
past. They are all important reservoirs of
information about societies that once lived
here. They are places where one can literally
touch the past – places that were built or
used hundreds or thousands of years ago.
Many of the historic monuments are open sites
you can visit and some are being opened with
free admission for the EHOD weekend. We hope
you will be encouraged to go out and explore
this diverse resource which is part of Northern
Ireland’s rich archaeological heritage.
