Thousands of non-profits around the world face the same challenge everyday; collecting, organizing, and receiving information for their field staff who work in remote locations with limited connectivity.

The 2010 earthquake in Haiti was a catastrophe of epic proportion that killed more than 300,000 people and left more than a million homeless. The epicenter of the quake was in Léogâne, a seaside town located 18 miles west of Port au Prince. One of the most important objectives for the local health clinic was to understand how it should best serve its constituents: What ailments were most common in the region? What medicines should be stocked? What types of doctors were needed? But conducting this type of survey was problematic on a number of fronts.

Traditional survey methodologies would not work: the burden of carrying hundreds of paper surveys across harsh terrain, the time required to manually tabulate survey results, and the lack of any connectivity in the field made the use of ‘online surveys’ infeasible. This is an example of the Last Mile Challenge that many international non-profit organizations encounter everyday.

To overcome this challenge, the Rasin Foundation, the non-profit organization spearheading this project, partnered with QuestionPro, to help solve it’s Last Mile challenges. Through this innovative program, field workers armed with iPads or Android-powered devices, can now administer their surveys offline, couple survey responses with GPS data, then upload their data once connectivity is available. Once uploaded, survey results are instantly available to Rasin Foundation staff anywhere in the world.

Project ChallengesWith no connectivity of any kind in the surrounding area, field workers required a lightweight, portable way to collect and record data while working in remote areas of the province.

The majority of individuals and families being surveyed continue to live in temporary housing – since collected data could not be correlated with a fixed address, the ability to associate response data with geo-data was vital.

With multiple field workers concurrently collecting data, the clinic needed a simple, automated way to aggregate and collate all of the data without further burdening an already limited staff.
