"New kid on the block."Bronze Mannikins are small, brownish birds about half the size of a sparrow. Normally only found north of Port Elizabeth, they are now seen more frequently in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. Possibly escapees from a private aviary, they have established themselves and are breeding in the areas around Kirstenbosch.They breed singly or in loose colonies and are mostly seen in a group. Juveniles are uniformly a dull greyish-brown colour lacking the contrast between a dark face and a pale throat. They are seed-eaters and are commonly found on bird tables.

Einstein is credited as once saying: “Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius – and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.”

MAKE SPACE, BREATHE AND CREATEWe live in a fast-paced, adrenalin-filled world where it is desirable to have more, do more and to generally be busy. ‘Busy’ is a status symbol. People are afraid of missing out and seemingly also afraid of finding themselves in a place of spaciousness and solitude – after all, what would you do? This lifestyle is filtering down to our children, causing levels of stress that have not been seen before. If your busyness and devices are making you feel like you’ve lost your child, then perhaps it’s time to simplify. Make space, breathe and create.

HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY AND TECHNOLOGYThe human body has not changed physiologically to keep up with the developments in technology. We still need the same nutrition, exercise, rest and number of hours sleep that our ancestors did 2 000 years ago. Before the advent of electricity, people went to bed when it became dark and woke up when the sun rose. Now with artificial light and the global village in constant chatter across the internet, we are able (and sometimes expected) to work 24 / 7. Remember when shops closed at lunchtime on a Saturday and opened again on a Monday?

BEWARE ACTIVITY OVERLOADWe all flourish when we have time and space to examine, explore and interact with our world without the pressures of “excess and clutter”. This can be in the form of excess: choices, information, belongings, activities or deadlines. Our children are hurrying from one (often good) activity to the next without having time to take stock,

appreciate or just play and be children. What starts out as a genuine attempt to enrich our children’s lives can end up as activity-overload and over-stimulation. ‘Boredom’ can be a good thing. Most times it indicates a spacious place and can be overcome with a bit of thought, initiative and creativity.

A WORLD FREE OF EXCESS AND CLUTTERA few years ago my wife and I embarked on an interesting exercise of de-cluttering the stuff which we owned. The questions we asked were along the lines of: “How often do we use this?” and, “Can we do without this?” It is amazing how much you can get rid of and the physical space it creates. In the same way we as parents can simplify our children’s routines and excess toys. As we decrease the number of toys our children play with, we increase their attention and capacity to play more meaningfully. Too much stuff results in a superficiality in the way that our children see and explore their worlds.

SPACE WHERE CREATIVITY CAN FLOURISHWhen thinning out toys, focus on keeping a mix that seem to keep your children engaged for long periods of time. These are often simple ‘open ended’ toys such as building blocks, cars or dress-up items for fantasy play. During the sorting process, throw in some rope, cardboard boxes and other items which can be transformed into a fort, truck, doll's house or whatever the play requires. Many so-called educational toys can be useful but

they can also suppress creative thought as there is often only one ‘correct’ answer or outcome to the activity.

WHAT IS IMPORTANT FOR YOUR FAMILY?The reality is that we have to live and parent with a conscious intentionality to simplify and create space - or it won’t happen. This is a work in progress and can’t be done instantly. Habits take time to form and new habits therefore also take time to re-form. It’s not easy to change things when it seems as if your family’s on a fast-moving vehicle. Start by visualising what you would like your life to look like and then begin making small changes. When I think back over my life it is the feelings, places, smells, people, hugs and laughs that I cherish and remember fondly – not the things I acquired or the status I have achieved in the eyes of others.

BUILD A SIMPLE FIRM FOUNDATIONBruce Fordyce once said of the Comrades Marathon: “The most important step is the first step.” The same applies in this process. Be true to our families’ values and needs before we capitulate to the world’s demands and pressures. Let us keep life simple and real.

On Saturday 3rd August, Pinelands Library celebrated the conclusion of this year's successful Reading Programme themed Explore South Africa @ Pinelands Library 2019. For five weeks, the little readers expanded their knowledge and improved their reading skills, managing to surpass last year's total of 1 282 books read, by 592, making this year's total 1 874 books! In the 7-9 year old age group, Josiah McGill was the winner with 154 books under his belt. In the 10-12 year old age group, Anna Gibbon, the winner in 2018 and also in 2017, once again rose to the top with 150 books to her credit.The readers and invited guests enjoyed the happy interaction with special guest author, Sihle Nontshokweni, who introduced her wonderful new picture book titled 'Wanda'. Everyone enjoyed her vivacious company and we wish her well in the literacy world. A big thanks to the special guest author Sihle Nontshokweni, the sponsors, Topline

In July this year the Commonwealth Cup Dance Championships (CCDC) united dancers and their teachers from all Commonwealth countries, at the Super Bowl at Sun City. The event has Grand Prix status and the Dance Co team won the section for Modern Jazz, coached by their resident Dance Co teacher Jodie Jackson.Viv Pullin, director of Dance Co which offers professional tuition in modern dance and hip hop, is very proud of this acheivement.

The deliberate choice of not setting the musical in America allowed the students to connect to their roles and express themes that are relevant to them as teenagers in South Africa in 2019. This was evident in the professional and authentic portrayal by the lead characters. The company was made up of a diverse group of 65 learners whose ensemble skills enhanced every element and the overall picture of the show. The music, choreography and ensemble work were of an exceptional standard and showed off the students’ wide range of talents. Sitting in the audience one could feel the unity and joy amongst the cast during their energetic performances. As well as keeping the authenticity of the show there was an added Pinelands flair.

VREDENHEIM Big Cats and Animal Farm

Vredenheim Wildlife and Winery has something for everyone including beautiful gardens surrounding a dam for a pleasant walk. We enjoyed a delicious brekafast and were tempted by the craft gin tasting. Most interesting for children was the animal farm where children could feed the animals, and play on the jungle gyms. We visited the gift shop and came away with some tasty moskonfyt ideal with cheese, or with a bowl of ice cream. Find the farm by taking the R310 from the N2 - the farm is just beyond the Van Ryn's Distillery. Call 021 881 3878.

Ms Notcutt, as the director, was able to draw out real, fabulous performances from each learner, and allow the cast the chance to shine on stage. It is rare to witness such a well-orchestrated blend of creativity on a school stage. Referred to as a three-course meal by one of the audience members, this production was a true reflection of the rich and powerful portrayal of a classic favourite.

On 8th August 2019 the Hugo Lamprechts Auditorium was filled with music by the Pinelands High School Music Department. The annual Gala Music Concert showcased the talented musicians as they entertained the audience with marimba, piano, brass bands and a string ensemble. The choir with soloist Buhle Swelindawo sang the moving Emlanjeni and music teacher Garth Kayster did a wonderful performance of The Way you Look Tonight with the orchestra conducted by Mrs D Chandler. Music has an essential, much loved and significant role in the life of the school.

A child-centred approach

to learningBeing a teacher and keeping up with technology can be daunting. One thing that was shared with me when I was still a student-teacher was: “don’t fall into the trap of always trying to entertain”. But I do love entertaining my students! Telling anecdotal stories, creating over-the-top explanations and putting together some whizz-bang presentations are all techniques I like to use. The technological tools that can help us do this are readily available for many teachers. However, the reality is that many students do not have a deep understanding of what we are trying to teach. For example, I find that students too often repeat the more anecdotal facts I entertained them with when they get to their end-of-year exam, rather than explaining the actual concepts being questioned. Furthermore, the thinkers in the class still tend to quickly lose focus and get bored.

THE LAYERED CURRICULUM FRAMEWORKIn grappling with the issue of getting all my students to engage with the content, I came across Kathie Nunley’s Layered Curriculum1 framework which I have been excited to adapt and start using with my classes. The basic idea is that you break up a series of tasks for a topic or module into three levels: - the essentials,- intermediate and- extension.

Students earn points by working on any tasks with maximums that can be awarded for each level. These tasks can include any learning activity such as listening to a lecture and making notes, making summaries, doing practice questions, completing a practical (a hands-on activity using science apparatus), conducting research or testing hypotheses. To obtain points, the students verbally have to defend the work they have completed to the teacher.

A USEFUL WAY TO INTEGRATE TECHNOLOGYI have found that this layered approach is a very effective way to integrate technology into the classroom - for example, to access various case studies, how-to video clips or to obtain information. It also enables students to create content in many different ways. This approach would be much less varied without the use of tablets. In addition, they are also used to administer an 'exit ticket'. STUDENTSGIVEN A CHOICEFor the teacher, lessons are not spent in front

of the class, but rather circulating during the lesson trying to award points to each student as often as possible. A key aspect is that students are given the choice as to which tasks to complete as there are many ways to accumulate points in each of the three levels. Differentiation is built into this approach, with students working at their own pace. This improves the remedial requirements for some students, as well as allowing other students to be extended. An essential aspect of this approach is accountability. This is achieved through the points tally for each level, and use of the exit ticket. The built-in accountability allows students to receive progress updates long before any formal assessments.

STUDENTS ENGAGING MOREAs there is a multitude of possibilities with this approach, I feel a renewed inspiration to be a more effective teacher. More importantly, the feedback from

my students has been suggesting that students are engaging more deeply with the subject matter. Here are a few quotes from the exit ticket to their latest module: “I learned not to procrastinate”; “To learn with understanding, rather than just reading and copying down”; “I learnt self-control and time management skills because this module requires those skills.”; “We all feel comfortable with different ways of learning: some people were more comfortable learning with the iPads, others were more comfortable learning with the flashcards, others using the electrical circuits, others doing the revision activities”; “I enjoy working in groups”; “I learnt that this module gave me a chance to engage with Sir, and have a one on one where he clearly expanded my knowledge and reminded me of things I had forgotten”.

THE REGGIO EMILIA APPROACHThe international Reggio Emilia approach to teaching and learning was initiated at Red Roots, the preprimary attached to Pinelands North Primary, with direct access to grade 1 at this prestigious school. Because of the success of this approach, Pinelands North is extending it into the rest of the school as we noticed that once children know how to ask the right questions, they can direct their own learning.

In this integrated learning approach, the children, teachers, parents and the environment are considered to be teachers. Anais Chandler, left, aced the gruelling final round of auditions for the Tygerberg Choir held over two days. On the same day Anais sang at a combined Music Concert with Micklefield and Rondebosch Boys’ Preparatory Schools at Pinelands High School, which concluded with a popular massed item called Sing written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Gary Barlow.

Pinehurst is incredibly proud to have two of their Grade 7 learners, Jonathan Walker and Athra Toffar, chosen for the science team that will travel to Vietnam for the International Maths and Science Olympiad.Only the top six highest achieving learners are chosen for the science team. Good luck to Jonathan and Athra, this is an outstanding achievement and a once in a lifetime experience.

This year Ella Molema won the Pinehurst internal Spelling Bee for Grade 4 - 6 learners and Tina Tsutsu was the runner up. These Grade 6 learners were two of fifty-four learners that took part in the District Spelling Bee this year. The learners were given 1 200 words to study for the competition and the final round includes unseen words. Both girls did incredibly well and made their school very proud. Ella went on to win the competition on the word leukaemia and is one of the top three learners that will be competing in the Provincial Spelling Bee on 31 August. There are a number of habits worth forming, especially when it comes to money and finances. Here are my top ten:

Live within your meansLiving within your means is not necessarily the same as ‘spending less than you earn’. There may be circumstances – such as paying for a tertiary education – where you need to spend money to increase your future earning potential. Living within your means, even if it means using ‘good debt’ strategically, is one of the most important financial concepts to employ to get ahead.

Actively monitor your spendingAs you get into the habit of record-keeping, checking bank balances, double-checking your debit orders and querying fees, the process of budgeting eventually forms part of everyday life. Be ruthless with your budgeting.

Pay your bills ahead of time Make a habit out of paying your bills well ahead of time and try to pay more than the minimum amount required. This will help to reduce the capital amount owing sooner and reduce the amount of interest you pay over time.

Read voraciouslyWith the broad selection and range of online publications, books and blogs covering the topic of financial planning, there is simply no excuse not to educate yourself – constantly. South African financial journalist, Maya on Money, runs an excellent blog. Personal Finance, Fin24, Business Live and MoneyWeb publish regular articles from industry thought leaders covering an array of financial planning topics.

Say ‘no’ to your childrenEven if you can afford to spoil your children materially, it is good to deny your children their ‘wants’ once in a while. They need to learn that no smart device or fashion item will make them a cool kid. There is no easier route to becoming popular and well-liked than by being a decent human being. Kindness costs nothing and has a higher rate of return than any other investment.

Automate your savingsBut be strategic about it. Find the balance between long-term investing and making provision for short-term emergencies. There’s no point tying all your savings into a retirement annuity while leaving your emergency fund short.

Practice delayed gratificationThe ability to delay gratification can have important consequences when making financial decisions because every purchase you make today is actually a withdrawal from your future financial security. When considering a purchase, you need to make a decision between what you want now versus what you want more.

Ignore short-term market noiseIf you are investing for the long-term, as opposed to speculating for short-term gains, then daily, weekly or even monthly market fluctuations should not distract you from your longer-term investment goals. By their very nature, investment markets ebb and flow. Part of being a successful investor means riding out volatility while waiting for the markets to rise.

Communicate about financesTalk to your partner and/or your children daily about personal finances. Be open with your loved ones about your financial goals, what you are working towards and how you plan to achieve them. Have age-appropriate discussions with your children, ensuring that all conversations about money are framed positively.

Give to othersA recent study by Oregon University demonstrated that charitable giving creates a response in the brain that elicits a surge of dopamine and endorphins. Studies also show that pleasure from charitable giving is felt regardless of the size, nature or value of the gift being given. So, whether you give of your time, resources or money, it is likely that you will experience greater satisfaction than people who do not.

DONOVAN ADONISPinelander Donovan Adonis, found his passion, in retirement, as manager at Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS (GAPA). He describes for us his experiences with the women of GAPA who have a motto, "Together we are stronger."

RETIREMENTOpting for some volunteer work after retirement, Donovan drew on his experiences at Christian Brothers High School in Athlone and his visits to St Joseph's Home in Philippi - spending mornings with young, very ill children, really touched his heart. He had experience as a board member for two NGOs chairing one of them for seven years, so it was no surprise when he was asked to give a professional overview of the functioning of GAPA - Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS. He worked as a volunteer with the organisation for four months preparing reports for the board and ultimately was asked to take on a part time position. He is very happy here although he actually works 8 hours a day! He has built up relationships with the community and admires the way they make every effort to provide for themselves and their families.

WHAT IS GAPA?During the height of the AIDS crisis many grandmothers were left as care-givers for grandchildren when their own children died from HIV/AIDS. Kathleen Broderick, an occupational physiotherapist continued the work started 20 years ago by the Albertina and Walter Sisulu Institute of Ageing in Africa at the University of Cape Town funded by Bristol Myers Squibb. GAPA was formed to spread information, and meet the needs of the community struggling with the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

GAPA SERVING A LARGE COMMUNITYToday the organisation operates from Khayelitsha - a community of more than a million people with few amenities. The grandmothers have become a strong band of women who have learnt to raise money through crafts to care for their families. They run organic vegetable gardens and attend weekly educational workshops to improve the lives of their children and grandchildren.

WHAT IS DONOVAN'S ROLE?"I see myself as a person transferring skills to the GAPA community. I am involved with international fund raising; developing and supporting projects ranging from the breakfast club where grandmothers can have a wholesome breakfast, to the educational presentations and the craft shop where goods handmade by the grandmothers can be sold."

EDUCATING THE WIDER COMMUNITYThe organisation employs five child carers, cooks, an occupational therapist and a field worker. International visitors are encouraged to have an "African Experience" by joining the African Impact project coming to Khayelitsha for 2 weeks or as long as two years to work in the community — sometimes bringing toys and playing with the children in the after care centre, teaching them about their countries. Grandmothers from GAPA share their knowledge with the wider community on the local Radio Zibonele and speak

about topics such as human rights, HIV/AIDS, cancer, elder abuse, will writing, parenting skills, vegetable gardening and business skills.

EMPOWERING THE GRANDMOTHERSLast year Donovan was invited to be part of a discussion at Wits regarding the illegal deductions from SASSA grants. He felt it would be better for the grandmothers to represent themselves and organised plane tickets for two speakers to go. They grew through the experience. Another opportunity that Donovan arranged was for two grandmothers to fly to Canada for a book launch — where one chapter had been written about the fight against poverty by GAPA. These dynamic grandmothers found themselves on their first trip outside the country and were also interviewed on television in Canada!

LONG TIME PINELANDERDonovan moved to Pinelands 27 years ago - seeing the suburb as a welcoming leafy green village, and an ideal community in which to raise children. His son and daughter went to the Red school and his grandson will go to Red Roots pre-primary school. Proximity to his work in town as the office administrator for a law firm was an added bonus. Two years ago he retired from his formal employment and is now a pivotal part of GAPA.

It was towards the end of a jovial evening of good food and drink, spent with friends regaling us with their stories of camping in Moremi, that I had taken the unthinkable step of agreeing to a camping trip. Those people who know me, also know that I don’t camp. Why on earth would one want to give up the comfort of a room that you can stand up straight in and an en suite bathroom with a flushing toilet for a tent and a long drop?

DRIVING FROM MAUN TO MOREMIAnyway, Mark thought this was a great idea and that’s how I found myself on a game drive vehicle from Maun to Moremi. The tar road soon gave way to a dirt road, flanked by Mopani trees. None of us minded the day- long journey as the weather was great and we saw a lot of game along the way. Our guide, Ace, had an extensive knowledge of the bush and was excellent at identifying birds. I was in the right mood to forget that there was a tent with my name on it at the end of the journey.

THE BIG FIVE SO CLOSE TO CAMPWe stopped to admire the biggest obstinacy of buffaloes that I have ever seen – a herd of 200 animals. About 10 minutes further, we saw a memory of 20 elephants. There are very few things that are as cute as a baby elephant, but breeding herds are not docile and the matriarch will protect her babies against any perceived threats. The dust hardly settled after passing the elephants, when we happened upon a pride of lions. By now, we could not believe our luck. To see three of the big 5 so close together is a treat, but I realised that it was already late afternoon and that we were

bound to be close to our camp. The big 5 are very dangerous animals and my delight at spotting these beautiful creatures was marred by an uneasy churning in my stomach. By the time we reached the tented camp my stomach felt a bit like an old washing machine on its spin cycle. We had snapped many close-up pics of the lions and I felt nervous as I confirmed that there is indeed NO FENCE around the camp. Luckily, the lovely aroma of a camp-fire cooked three course dinner, soon set my nerves at ease and the only visitor was an inquisitive honey badger.

NATURE'S DINNER TABLE ON OUR DOORSTEPThat first night in the tent, I had the best sleep ever. We were woken by the excited whooping of hyenas and the traumatised trumpeting and stampeding of the elephant herd as a baby elephant had to surrender to the hungry attack of the hyenas. Not long after that, the lions joined in the fray and stole the kill from the hyenas. It was both fascinating and truly disturbing to watch this big pride of lions tussle over the pieces of baby elephant. I can’t figure out why I feel less emotional at a buck or zebra kill. This particular scene was quite unsettling especially as this all played out unnervingly close to our camp site.

LIONS APPROACHING THE CAMP!With lots more animal sightings and good bird spotting all day long on our drive, I was getting into the spirit of camping and even managed to enjoy my quick shower under a bucket of water in my shower tent. The events of the morning felt boxed and shelved by then. That night after dinner, we all sat around the campfire sharing safari

stories. My heart skipped a beat when I shone my torch around the campsite — there were two lions standing a mere 15 meters away from the staff busy cleaning up the cooking area of the camp! It was such a surreal feeling, that I forgot to be scared and hid behind the big tree near us. In retrospect, I can’t imagine how I thought the tree would be a useful line of defence.

RESCUING THE THREE COOKSAce immediately ordered us all onto the game drive vehicle parked right next to us, and we went to rescue the three cooks who were huddled next to their trailer. The two lions retreated a few meters to join the rest of the NINE strong pride. It took us over an hour of hooting and banging loudly on the side of our truck, to convince the lions to leave our camp. They seemed amused by our efforts to scare them off. By this stage, I had more adrenalin than blood in my veins.

AN UNEASY NIGHTWe all reluctantly returned to our tents. I wondered how I was going to make it through the night without my regular visits to my long drop a good 10 meters away from the safety of the tent. It was not long afterwards that we heard the lions take down a zebra somewhere in the distance. I felt that the bush was returning to normality and that we were not the focus of the pride any longer.

AN ADVENTURE TO REMEMBERWe all agreed that this visit to Moremi, with Ace as our guide, was the experience of a lifetime. I might even agree to go camping again and what a story to add to my arsenal of safari adventures.

On the morning of Mandela Day this year, the grade 7s of PNPS made almost 500 sandwiches in the hall, to hand over to the children of Klipfontein Primary. After everything was packed in the buses, the grade 7s accompanied by staff from different areas of the school, had the privilege of spending the day with the children and staff of Klipfontein Primary in Bontheuwel. The principal of Klipfontein, Ismail Meyer, staff members and the grade 7s, welcomed us. Within the first fifteen minutes of meeting, the children had found a friend and formed groups, shared a snack, as well as stories about themselves. Each group then had a turn to work together to serve sandwiches to rest of the school. It was a cold and rainy day, but nothing could put a damper on the enthusiasm for soccer! While the two soccer teams (one boys’ team and

one girls’ team) and their supporters went next door to the community field to play a friendly match, others were enthralled in chess matches which were taking place. Curious community members made their

way over to the field to see what the excitement was all about. Staff members were taken on a tour of the school and knowledge was shared about all the different processes that each school follows. When it came time to leave, hugs were given and parting gifts were exchanged. Ismail Meyer presented us with a beautifully framed drawing to commemorate Mandela Day. There are no words to express the feeling of witnessing our

Grade 7s displaying all the values that we hold so high here at PNPS. It was a truly special event, that left us feeling humbled and grateful. By Bev Pereira, Grade 7 teacher at PNPS.

The talent at this year’s Science Fair was outstanding! Many enthusiastic budding scientists created different displays of their work, from volcanoes to homemade catapults. The competition was very close and the judges finally decided on a tie for first place. The senior winners were Seth and Ben Peers, with a homemade sound and light engineering show using laser lights and music, and the other senior winner was Daniel White-Philips who created a catapult. The foundation phase winner used sugar to make crystals: Nima Shanley showed us how crystals can form from a sugar solution, and then many children got to taste the crystals she had made. Well done to all those who participated!

1. Preheat oven to 200 °C and place the mushrooms on a baking tray or shallow oven dish.

2. Mix oil, parsley, lemon rind and pepper together. Brush the mushrooms with half of this mixture.

3. Add the tomatoes to the remaining oil mixture and spoon onto the mushrooms. Mix the two cheeses together and sprinkle on top.

4. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the cheese has melted, turns slightly golden brown and the mushrooms are just cooked, still holding their structure.

5. Serve mushrooms with dollops of pesto and fresh rocket or basil leaves. Slices of avocado are also delicious with the mushrooms.

Mushrooms are wonderfully versatile and owing to their meaty texture, are equally popular as a side dish or as a base for a vegetarian or vegan meal. The nutty flavour, especially when roasted, pan-fried or grilled, is delicious and mushrooms work well with so many different foods, making them even more interesting to use.

In this recipe Italian flavours are added to make a delicious side dish with a braai; or alternatively the tasty mushrooms can be served as a vegetarian meal – perfect for this time of the year. The oil mixed with lemon and Italian parsley is used to season both the mushrooms and the tomatoes. All of this is then topped with cheese and roasted together – yum!

Extra large mushrooms are often used as gluten-free pizza bases and roasted in a similar way as in this recipe. The list of ingredients one can use as toppings is endless. So be creative according to your preference – either ‘build’ a mushroom

pizza with more veggies, bacon, ham or other cold meat; or use cream or cottage cheese seasoned with wholegrain mustard and fresh herbs to fill the mushrooms before roasting. Almost any cheese is good with mushrooms, from good old cheddar to mozzarella, pecorino, camembert, goat’s milk cheese and even blue cheese.

Two tips with mushrooms: never wash them – they are literally like little sponges and will absorb a lot of water, only to push it out once they get into contact with heat. In a frying pan this becomes a struggle, as the mushrooms tend to boil in the liquid and do not fry. Rather wipe them with a piece of kitchen towel as the growth medium they are planted in, is in fact sterile and not ‘dirty’, and is easy to wipe away. Secondly, mushrooms will last longer in a cloth or brown paper bag, as they sweat and deteriorate faster in plastic.
