Where Shropshire meets Wales
Historic - Friendly - Surprising
HistoricMarkets have featured in Oswestry since 1262 and there is nothing better than being here on market day when stalls are scattered from Bailey Head down to Llwyd Mansion right in the centre of town. From the ramparts of the 3,000-year-old hill fort- Old Oswestry, to the stunning castles of Whittington and Chirk that once guarded the borders of the Marches, Oswestry and the Borderlands are ready to share their fascinating history with you.
FriendlySometimes English, sometimes Welsh, Oswestry and The Borderlands are known for their friendly folk. Take a stroll round town, call in at some of our independent shops,
stop for a cuppa or visit one of the town’s traditional pubs – you will be very welcome.
SurprisingOur visitors often say the surprise is that there is so much to see and so many different events to go to and yet they hadn’t been here before. Don’t miss the dramatic metal sculptures at The British Ironworks or a walk over the awesome ‘Stream in the Sky’ at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Be here in July for the fun and free Food and Drink Festival or in August when the Hot Air Balloon Carnival takes off from our beautiful town centre park. Stay a day or longer – we are sure you will find surprises around every corner.

VISIT OSWESTRY
OswestryFriendly
It’s traditional, it’s friendly, it’s a market town – this is Oswestry
There’s a bit of a buzz about Oswestry these days and we think it’s coming from our visitors who say, “What a friendly town, what a surprise, we love it!”
Visit on market days - enjoy the bargains as you discover the many independent shops and stalls. Browse for antiques and arts, indulge your inner MasterChef, be a bookworm or go on a discovery of local flavours in our speciality food shops.
Take to the streets - and enjoy one of the many events that take place in the town centre. From the free, fun and friendly food festival to the soaring hot air balloon carnival through to the festive Christmas live, we think Oswestry is “Fest Fab” all year!
Take a walk in the park - its “much loved” status says so much about how it brings together locals and visitors alike. Stroll past the stunning flowers in the memorial gardens, the life size bronze statue of Wilfred Owen the war poet, then on to the Victorian Bandstand and play areas.
Enjoy ice creams and picnics all summer long and why not spend a sunny Sunday afternoon chilling while you listen to one of the free summer concerts?
Relish the tastes and flavours of Oswestry – the café culture is scrumptious and the pub scene lively. Many of Oswestry’s oldest buildings are pubs and the town was once said to have over 100! Now the pubs, cafes and restaurants are as lively or laid back as you could want. Celebrate local produce in the restaurants or experience the growing pub music scene. We’re a friendly bunch so come on in!

Begin at the beginning - Old Oswestry. This 3000-year-old hill fort is consideredto be one of the finest in the country and legend even has it that Queen Guinevere was born here. The ramparts have softened over time and are now a haven for plants and wildlife. Take a walk to the top and enjoy views over Oswestry town and the Shropshire plain.
Get to know King Oswald - the town is said to be named after this king and saint. Visit the Church of St. Oswald and the timbered old school building in the churchyard and you will be in one of oldest parts of the town. Walk on a little further and you will come to Oswald’s Well. The folklore and myth say that when Oswald died at the battle of Maserfield a large raven scooped up his severed arm and where it dropped was the point that the first water of Oswald’s Well sprung. St. Oswald’s Day is 5th August and in 2020 there will be the first St. Oswald’s Festival.
Ready to ride? – Oswestry’s Cambrian Railway heritage is fascinating. It began with Thomas Savin, the gunpowder expert and visionary who brought the railway to the centre of town. Later, Wilfred Owen’s father Tom was posted to Oswestry after being taken on as a junior clerk by Great
Western Railway. In 2020 the long-awaited connection from Oswestry to Weston will re-open. Should we mention there is a brewery and distillery at the other end?
Walk the Wilfred Owen trail – the war poet was born in Oswestry in 1893. Follow the trail around town to see Victorian Oswestry that he and his family would recognise. Then, take a quiet moment in the park to see his life size bronze statue. Want to know more about the history of town? Visit The Town Museum in the Guildhall on the market square or, on summer Saturdays, why not join one of our volunteer guides for a walking tour of historic Oswestry.

Historic - they say that Queen Guinevere was born at Old Oswestry Hill Fort. Did she play there and watch the dawn from the ramparts?
Friendly - take a stroll round town to meet our friendly independent shopkeepers
Surprising - watch the hot air balloons as they glide over town after launching from Cae Glas Park at the Balloon Carnival in August
There is a great pride, tradition and optimism about Oswestry and at Oswestry Town Council we celebrate this in our day to day role within the town. As a council, we believe that by supporting many of the community activities and attractions throughout the year, the vibrancy of the town will be enhanced, and visitors and locals alike will enjoy being in Oswestry and will want to return.
The markets are an inherent part of Oswestry’s identity. The traditional weekly street markets continue today and often include speciality themes – why not visit the bustling monthly Artisan Market or our Autumn Apple Day? The indoor market, open every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, has an eclectic mix of speciality stalls that offer everything from fresh local produce and street food to collectors’ stalls and dressmakers.
We enjoy supporting Oswestry ‘s fast growing programme of events, many of which take place in the town streets and Cae Glas Park. From the free, fun, Food and Drink Festival in July to the soaring
Hot Air Balloon Carnival in August and the ultimate pre-Christmas celebration that is Christmas Live- the streets of Oswestry Town are full of people having fun.
As a council we are especially proud of award winning Cae Glas Park – in 2019, not only did we win a 15th consecutive gold award in Heart of England in Bloom but also the local Neighbourhood award and Fields in Trust gave the park ‘much loved’ status. Walk through the memorial gates, past the stunning summer flowers and the recently installed statue of the Oswestry born, famous war poet, Wilfred Owen.
Enjoy a game of bowls or tennis, challenge the family at crazy golf and have fun at the new children’s play area. Visit on a summer afternoon and bring a picnic as music soars from the Victorian bandstand during the free Summer concerts that feature everything from traditional brass bands to rock and reggae.
Oswestry Visitor & Exhibition Centre is a landmark building in the town; built in 1407, it was the second oldest grammar school in the country. Visit the Town Museum too, housed in our impressive Guild Hall, it celebrates Oswestry and its people.
We are hoping to receive coach friendly status in 2020 and are already welcoming many coach tours to town. We can meet your coach and give you an introduction to our lovely market town. (See map on page 55 for coach park and drop off points). If visiting by coach, let us welcome you. Contact [email protected] to help make your visit easier.

Take a day out from Oswestry and head towards North Wales.
Dare you walk across the Stream in the Sky? - Thomas Telford’s awesome aqueducts are part of the 11 mile long UNESCO World Heritage site. Take a stroll along the first on the Llangollen Canal at Chirk – look up to see a train passing on the viaduct or maybe be overtaken by a narrow boat headed towards the ‘Darkie’, a 460 yard long canal tunnel. Now catch your breath when you reach the wondrous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Walk across and dare to look over the parapet, this is Thomas Telford’s “stream in the sky”.
Song and dance time - the riverside town of Llangollen is also famous for The International Eisteddfod, a unique and colourful festival of song and dance.
Performers come from all over the world to showcase their country’s love of performance. The evening concerts feature everything from pop to jazz and world music, Be there too for The Choir of the World competition- the highlight amongst many at the week long event.
Travel with horsepower – take a trip on Llangollen railway, the trains steam up the Dee Valley and there aren’t many summer weekends when they don’t have a special event – you might even meet that famous tank engine, Thomas. Since 1884 there has been real horsepower on the canal, take a trip on the horse-drawn boats in Llangollen and relax as you enjoy this most picturesque stretch of the canal. Go a little further to the Horseshoe Falls where canal and river split.

Visit a castle or historic house - the imposing castle at Chirk is only a short drive away and is perched overlooking Shropshire, Cheshire and North Wales. Events throughout the summer bring knights and princesses into the courtyard one weekend or battling soldiers in heavy armour the next. The spring snowdrop walks are a perfect way to discover the wooded estate grounds or how about an autumn bat walk?
Or historic house - another impressive mansion will demand a visit. Erddig Hall at Wrexham couldn’t be more different to the Marcher castle at Chirk. This red brick hall was left untouched for many years and now gives glimpses of a fascinating stately home which boasted an unusual and close relationship between the masters and their servants. A real “upstairs downstairs” experience – don’t miss the poems written about many of the staff – some of them sound real characters!

Take the scenic route – don’t miss the drive through The Ceiriog Valley. You will find charming and tiny Welsh hamlets then travel through wild landscapes back to Oswestry.

Historic - Chirk Castle has been gazing over the Marches countryside since 1295. Take a walk to the ha-ha, you can see for miles on a clear day
Friendly - get to know the performers at the International Eisteddfod in July. They come from all over the world to this colourful spectacle of music and dance
Surprising - when you take a cruise with the horse drawn boats of Llangollen, we believe you will be travelling with Britain’s oldest travel company!
Take a day out from Oswestry and head towards North Shropshire.
Meet the New Saints football team – at the Venue. Our local team crosses the border, they are based in Shropshire and play in Wales. It’s a fun family venue too, there’s soft play, 10 pin bowling, gym and places to eat.
All creatures great and small – The place to meet everything from guinea pigs to shire horses and to learn lots more about rural life is the award winning, Park Hall Countryside Experience. This is not only the place to meet the smallest and cuddliest rabbits and guinea pigs but also to learn lots more about rural life. It’s a fun filled family day out with a farming theme and so much more. Pig racing, lamb feeding and tractor rides can be followed by a war time trenches experience or a visit to the Welsh Guards museum. Want to know more about farming? Then visit Oswestry Show in August. Meet Shropshire
and North Wales championship farm animals, watch show jumping and see the biggest and best farm machinery in this one day farming spectacular.
That pantomime connection – we have to mention Dick Whittington (though possibly not his cat). The legendary figure has strong connections to Whittington village’s own castle. He would probably still recognise what remains of the castle and moat though could be surprised to see wedding couples posing in the castle grounds!
What a performance! – 2020 will be Whittington’s 8th festival of classical Chamber music and will take the theme Folklassical - Hungarian, Alpine and Celtic Folk Music and Classical Music. This friendly music festival brings an exciting line-up of folk and classical musicians from around the world to a tiny border village.

Historic - you can’t find a more quintessential English village than Whittington. The moated castle is right in the centre and a perfect summer day out would be to their village fete in August Friendly - meet the animals at Park Hall Countryside Experience – but look out you could be nibbled by an over-friendly goat!
Surprising - A Welsh football team in Shropshire? Follow the New Saints if you are a football fan.

Our own lake district – the Ice Age saw the formation of the meres and mosses that are known as Shropshire’s Lakelands. Ellesmere, Colemere, Blakemere are renowned for the birdlife and a visit in spring to the Heron Watch can be rewarded with a close-up view of these elegant birds. In summer, enjoy The Mere and hire a rowing boat or enjoy a trip on the little cruiser that tootles around the lake. Take to two wheels and hire a bike to explore. Want to see a bit more of this pretty town? The historic canal wharf is right in the centre of town and from here you can follow the iconic Ellesmere Sculpture Trail back to the mere and beyond.
Off the edge - go to the furthest edge of North Shropshire now. Wem, Whitchurch and Market Drayton are more of Shropshire’s unique market towns. Then visit Hawkstone

Follies. it’s a 200 year old extravagant woodland fantasy with caves and grottos. Climb to the top for striking views over the Shropshire plain.
Take a day out from Oswestry and head towards Shrewsbury, our county town and on to the Ironbridge Gorge Museum.
Begin the day with iron – start at the British Ironwork Centre and Sculpture Park on the outskirts of Oswestry. This unique attraction will intrigue and amaze you. Their metal sculpture trail will introduce you to everything from a golden giraffe to a dragon perched quietly on top of a car – not yours, we can assure you! Home to the well travelled and emotive Knife Angel, this sculpture park is always offering something unique and fascinating. The 2 day transport rally in July adds a different metal perspective to your day out!
Wet but definitely not wild - imagine when the canals were the main transport arteries and discover the tranquil Montgomery Canal heading towards
Welshpool and Newtown. The canal is now creeping back to life as parts are restored and you will be fascinated by the birds, bees and butterflies as you stroll along. A very pleasant way to see more is to take a ride on a traditional narrow boat at Maesbury and let Cracker the horse pull you along this unspoilt stretch of the Monty.
Then wild but not wet - turn left at Nesscliffe and climb up to Kynaston’s cave. Shropshire’s only highwayman (as far as we know!) lived here with his horse Beelzebub. He was more Robin Hood than gangster and he must have loved the glorious views over Shropshire and Wales. Follow the view to Melverley and the River Severn and visit St. Peter’s black and white timber framed church. It sits on a bend of the river and has been welcoming pilgrims for over 1000 years.

Get to know Sabrina, goddess of the river - discover Shrewsbury nestling in a loop of the River Severn. Charles Darwin’s birthplace is a higgledy piggledy mix of black and white buildings. Don’t miss the world famous flower show in August – a spectacular event with flowers, music, arena events and the occasional celebrity chef.
Another day out with iron - the second UNESCO World Heritage site in our area is Ironbridge. Recognised as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, the iconic iron bridge is the centre piece for a fascinating collection of 10 museums. These highlight everything from Victorian life to industry, bone china and science. Spend time at the Victorian town of Blists Hill and experience the nostalgia of childhood sweet shops, you could spend a penny or two in the bank or enjoy a sing song in the village

pub with ales from a bygone time. Ready for a cuppa now? Coalport China Museum will show you the most exquisite china cups and saucers and more.
Take a day out from Oswestry and head south into Wales and the aptly named market town of Welshpool. Stop on the way at Llanymynech for the Limeworks and canal then onto Lake Vyrnwy and the wondrous waterfall at Llanrhaeadr.
Amble along the edge - Offa’s Dyke Path defines the border as you head south from Oswestry. From here down to Montgomery, you will often take one step in Wales and one in England, so you can imagine just how stunning the landscapes are as you walk the path. Llanymynech village could be your first stop and it is right on that border. The Limeworks Heritage Area and restored Hoffman Kiln alongside the canal give you an insight into how lime was produced. Walk along the tow path to get a dramatic view of Llanymynech Rocks.
Perched above them is the local golf club, it is the only course where you can tee off in England and putt out in Wales! Breidden Hill topped by Rodney’s Pillar soars 350 metres over the valley looking towards Welshpool and has been guarding the view since the gentlemen of Montgomery built the pillar in tribute to Admiral Rodney.
Climb aboard – Welshpool and Llanfair Railway is one of the great little trains of Wales. They steam through the beautiful Mid-Wales countryside from Welshpool to Llanfair Caerinion and back. You could be helping stoke a locomotive if being a train driver is on your bucket list. There are lots of special events in Welshpool through the year – don’t miss the summer transport festival and you can boogie into the 1940s festival in September.

You could say that The Andrew Logan Museum in Berriew is fascinating. This showcase of the sculptor’s work is also delightful, different and like nothing you will have seen before.
Where next? Hidden gems are calling - The serene and scenic Lake Vyrnwy will be a beautiful stop before you head back to Oswestry. The man made lake is renowned for the RSPB bird reserve. Why not hire a bike? All the family could enjoy the views as you cycle around the 12 mile flat circuit. Time for one more wonder in Wales? - It must be Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfall. Visit a farm - get up close and personal with the cutest animals at the national award- winning farm attraction, Park Hall Countryside Experience. Lamb feeding starts the year and losing yourself (or maybe an annoying brother or sister) in the maize maze is a fun day out in summer.
Meet a gorilla – but not as you know it! Visit the British Ironworks Centre and see how many metal animals you can count on safari. Did you spot the dinosaur sized scorpion or maybe the enormous spoon gorilla?
Go on a science quest - let’s explore and you could call in at Techniquest Glyndŵr at Wrexham for sensational demos and lots of fun at the live science shows.
Time for castle capers - for all sorts of historical fun, let’s find a castle. Anyone being naughty? They could be put in the stocks at Whittington Castle or even end up in the dungeons at Chirk Castle. Better be good then!
Let’s make tracks - how about a day on wheels or tracks? Try a train ride, you could spend a whole day going from one track to another. Steam or diesel – you choose. A gentle bike ride round Ellesmere or Lake Vyrnwy is fun but if it’s a bit more action you would like, get on a trail bike and have a day in the mud in the Berwyn Mountains.
Make a date with the New Saints – our local football club has more than just match day fun. It’s a venue for all the family with soft play and a bowling alley and bar.

Surprising - there is only one hot air balloon carnival that takes off from the centre of a town and that’s Oswestry. Watching them soar over town is a wonderful way to spend a Bank Holiday weekend.
It could be the border location that helps bring together so many diverse talents but whatever the cause the result is a great mix of arts and events that will keep you entertained all year long.
Fun, free and fab - the Oswestry Food and Drink Festival takes centre stage in July when all things local and delicious can be tasted throughout the town centre. There are often speciality markets and events too. Apple day is tasty and the dog shows are the friendliest! The sparkling finale of the year is Christmas Live. Music, art and drama, food, flowers and fireworks – these borderlands are fest fabulous all year
The Borderlands are brilliant – don’t miss Oswestry Show in August, it’s a one day show of everything rural. There are so many events through the summer, take a trip back in time and visit a castle and bring history to life - you could be trying on armour or learning to joust and the knights and princesses’ weekend is always a fun filled family event. Another family day out is Kids Fest and for a more grown up experience – there’s Oktober Fest both in The Quarry Park in Shrewsbury.
Borderland artistry - Oswestry is home to around 200 artists, including Borderland Visual Arts. The exhibitions keep flowing throughout the year at galleries such as Qube, The Visitor and Exhibition Centre, Willow Gallery and the Library. Visit in June and you can meet the people behind the art in their open studios event.
Music minded? – you are in for a treat. From the Youth Music and International Chamber Music Festivals in spring through to the International Eisteddfod in high summer, whichever music genre is your favourite, there will be an event to enjoy. It’s local too. The town music scene is buzzing. From charismatic venues like The Hermon Chapel to many of the local pubs, there is an eclectic mix of live music to enjoy. Want a different way to spend a Sunday afternoon? There are free Sunday concerts in the park - Salsa one Sunday, Reggae the next or maybe a local brass band.
And for the finale – we can’t wait for the opening of the Holroyd Community Theatre, a new venue with an exciting and varied programme of productions. The new residential Shakespeare Summer School with renowned RSC coach Michael Corbidge promises to be something special too.
