Woodridge Community Association News

Become a member of the WCA $5 a year

Woodridge Business Board $50 per year

Place the money with your name, postal address and telephone number in an envelope and put it in the silver

letter box in the wall next to the PO Boxes.

The Lower Coastal Community Association had its quarterly meeting in Woodridge on Monday 19th Feb. The main agenda was the progress of a primary school in Woodridge, a silver chain service for the Lower Coastal Area and paying costs incurred for the school survey last year

Representatives from Guilderton, Redfield Park, Sov-ereign Hill, Neergabby and Woodridge were present, Seabird the only Association missing.

It was agreed that each association pay $45 to Sover-eign Hill who had organised the school survey. Paul from Sovereign Hill had written to Silver Chain on behalf of the LCCA and asked if the Lower Coastal Area could have a service, the reply is that a larger survey is currently under way and they recognise that Gingin Shire is under serviced. So we live in hope of hearing from them again.

Sue Moir from Sovereign Hill wrote to our State Gov-ernment representative Gary Snook after she correlat-ed the results of the school survey, he replied on 17th January and enclosed a letter from the Hon Mark McGowan MLA minister for Education and Training. He quoted that the 3 schools, Bindoon Primary, Gin-gin District High and Lancelin Primary that over the last six years the combined Semester 1 enrolment at these 3 schools had increased by 5 students from 855 in 2001 to 860 in 2007.

With only 21 students in Years 11 and 12 a fuller pro-gram cannot be contemplated, and there are no pres-sures in Gingin therefore a primary school in Woodridge is not planned. We found these statistics very hard to believe given the number of families moving into the area and the fact that more busses have been laid on!

They also seem to have missed the point that we have 4 year olds travelling in busses with teenagers for a good part of their day from the Coast to Gingin. Also that a lot of children are now being either bussed or driven to the Wanneroo Shire. We would particularly like to hear from parents who feel they would like a school in Woodridge to contact their local Community Association, or write to the Moore River News, Gin-gin News, Sun City News or Advocate. Maybe with a bit more publicity we will be heard. The LCCA will be there to help and will continue to write to the rele-vant departments but the drive needs to be from the parents.

One other problem arose and that is that virtually eve-ry Association is in need of a secretary. Surely

there are people out there in the Lower Coastal Area that have a few hours to spare a month to write up the minutes of meetings, write a few emails and letters and keep the Moore River News informed of local news!!!! It was sad to hear that Wendy West, who has done so much for our area will be retiring for at least a year, she will be missed

The Woodridge Community and especially the Ambulance, Fire Brigade and the Cadets will sorely miss Jean Grimsey who has been such a willing and dedicated volunteer for many years giving her time working with each group, always on call and always there to give help and comfort for whoever needed it. Jean and Greg are moving on after many years in Woodridge raising a family and watching their grand-children grow. We all wish you both well in your new adventure together. Enjoy putting your feet up know-ing the phone isn't going to ring!!! Thanks Jean We shall miss you.

30 little “chicks” and their mothers attended the library on Monday 21st January for stories and painting and they all had a great time. GINGIN OBSERVATORY Events for March

RETURN OF SATURN! (SATURDAY, 15 MARCH 2008)

Saturn has been deeply missed from our night skies of late. There is no more beautiful astronomical object to observe at closer quarters! Peter Birch, professional WA Astronomer, will again be making a visit to Gingin Observatory and joining in to welcome this wonderful planet back into view. The quintessential Southern Cross will also be visible and Peter will examine this constellation in a bit further detail.

“Return of Saturn!” is to be held at Gingin Observatory on Saturday, 15 March 2008 from

8.00pm to 10.30pm. $34.00 adults, $30.00 concessions and $15.00 children

in the evening.

B.Y.O. TELESCOPE CLASS! (SUNDAY, 16 MARCH 2008)

Having difficulties using that telescope you bought last year or the year before? Is it hiding in the back of the cupboard or garage? Now’s a great time to pull it out, dust it off and bring it up to Gingin Observatory where you can learn how to use it. With the assistance of the Gingin Observatory astronomers, this single evening class will demonstrate the basic techniques of telescope use, how to set them up and how to use them. Perfect for the beginner astronomer who may have bought a telescope but has never been able to use it to its full potential.

After perfecting your technique join in the fun as you start to focus your telescope on various objects in clear night skies. All the various astronomical equipment at Gingin Observatory will also be available for use and the astronomers close at hand to help out with hints and tips.

The B.Y.O. Telescope Class is to be held at Gingin Observatory on Sunday, 16 March 2008 from 7.00pm to 10.30pm. Spaces are limited and

bookings essential. Call 08 9575 7740 or email [email protected]. The course costs

$50 for the telescope owner. Other visitors are welcome at $25.00 adults, $20.00 concession and $15.00 children. Complimentary tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits are also included in the

evening.

THIS MONTH’S SPECIAL at THE SPACE PLACE SHOP

With its preassembled, adjustable steel tripod, the Nexstar 114 SLT can be up and ready

to use in a matter of minutes. For more information call the Gingin Observatory on 08 9575 7740. WHAT’S NEW?

SQUARE KILOMETRE ARRAY PATHFINDER CONFERENCE

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a $1.8billion international mega-science project. It is a next-generation radio telescope that will be over fifty times more powerful than the world's largest existing telescope. Australia has been short-listed as one of the two sites identified as potential locations for the SKA.

As part of the bid, the Australian SKA Coordination Committee will build the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). ASKAP will be a new radio telescope consisting of 40 radio dishes, to be designed and built by CSIRO, in collaboration with leading overseas astronomers and engineers, that will provide an important test-bed for SKA technology as well as being a world-leading telescope in its own right.

A conference entitled Deep Surveys of the Radio Universe with Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Pathfinders, to be held 31 March to 4 April 2008 at the University of Western Australia in Perth, is timely due to extensive development, planning and construction now occurring for a number of major SKA pathfinder projects. Topics to be addressed in this conference include the potential of international SKA Pathfinders to address key questions in astrophysics, the current state of observations and theoretical models responsible for defining pathfinder science goals, and synergies of radio surveys with planned and possible future ground and space-based surveys across a broad range of wavelengths and technological challenges such as wide-field imaging.

Please register or send an email to [email protected] if you wish to receive further updates. For more information on SKA or

ASKAP please visit www.ska.gov.au or www.skatelescope.org.

Thanks to all those who are recycling their cans up near the fire shed. I’ve had heaps

over the last couple of months.

To all those who don’t, it doesn’t take much to keep your empty cans separate {in a carton or produce bag} and drop it of on your way past when it’s full.

As well as raising funds for the fireies, it’s helping our environment and we all know how important that is!!

Please only leave cans there for recycling. Steel cans cardboard/paper glass can be taken to

Tamalla Park on Marmion Ave, Mindarie. Not open on Mondays thanks Nic

By the time we go to print we should have a sign out the front of the proper-ty so you can locate us a lot easier. We are located at 18 Blackbutt Grove Gabbadah ( Redfield park estate )

Please check our website to familiarize yourself with our facilities and also what we have to offer in more detail. www.xclusivelife.com.au.

Once again I encourage you to come and see what the big hype is all about. We are no ordinary health club in the way that it is our main objective for you and your family to create a healthier and new lifestyle. It is our guarantee from us that you will leave a healthier person. Remember you only have a financial commit-ment to us until you achieve your individualized goal.

Health Tip of the month.

It is imperative that you eat a piece of tropical fruit within 15 minutes of completing your exercise routine. This will not only revitalize your energy but will keep your metabolism up, hence continuing to burn more body fat.

Outcome:

Greater amounts of calories used which in turn gives a greater loss of body fat loss for the same effort of ex-ercise.

If you fail to do this your body will slow its metabo-lism down and you will find that your energy levels will deplete rapidly.

Outcome: less calor ies used which in turn means less body fat loss and less energy for the remainder of your day.

Thankyou, we look forward to seeing you.

Dawn Lets walk with silent shoes through the forest and only on gentle feet lest we waken the sleeping giants. For this day was made for our awak-

ening, that you and I should know the secrets of dawn before the sunrise ceremony begins. Lets sit beside the silent pond and ask permission to wash within its stillness, when it beckons lets softly sink within its depths so cold and shiver joyously in shock awareness as its own life stirs ours. Lets play in those first rays of sun and waken our spirit in silent communion with life. When forest is ready lets dance into the day and sing alive our friends who still lay sleeping.
