Summartónar is organized by Felagið Føroysk Tónaskøld (Association of Faroese Composers) in collaboration with

Norlurlandahúsið í Føroyum (The Nordic House)

Beginning in 1984, Faroese composers started organizing concerts of their own music together with works by international composers. After establishing the Association of Faroese Composers (Felagið Føroysk Tónaskøld) in 1987 these concerts became more regular, especially with the annual Spring Concert and a series of concerts over the summer in collaboration with the Listasavn Føroya. In 1991 a concert with works by several Faroese composers was presented at the St Magnus Festival in Orkney. After participating at a festival in a community comparable with the Faroe Islands, we decided to establish a similar festival the following year in the Faroe Islands. We used the name Summartónar from the beginning and in 1992 15 concerts were held in Tórshavn, Kirkjubø and Runavík with compositions by William Heinesen, Edvard Nyholm Debess, Alti K. Petersen, Pauli í Sandagerði, Heðin Meitil, Bjarni Restorff, Ólavur Jøkladal, H.J. Højgaard, Esmar Jacobsen, Sunleif Rasmussen, Kristian Blak, Richard Stanley and Graeme Rudd in addition to classical repertoire.

This year we celebrate the 25th festival with all the performing artists being either residents of the Faroe Islands or Faroese

musicians living abroad. However, several of the participating ensembles also include musicians from other countries: Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, England, Russia, Togo. It is a sign of the strenth of the Faroese musical scene that it is now quite possible to set up a programme of more than 150 concerts with predominantly local musicians performing mainly Faroese compositions at an international level, and we are also proud of the fact that Faroese musicians and composers are now an integrated part of an international musical network.

During the early years, Summartónar’s programme consisted mainly of classical and newly written music in contemporary classical style. From 2005, however, jazz and new folk became an integral part of the activity.

Over the years more than 1600 concerts have been presented and each year several new works are performed - over 500 compositions have had their world premieres at Summartónar, the majority of these written by Faroese Composers.

This year we celebrate the 25th Summartónar festival

e Faroese Stamps - The Wreck of Westerbeek

This stamp issue from February 2016 is

presenting the unique story of the Dutch

VOC ship 'Westerbeek' which ran ashore

on Lopranseiði on the west coast of

Suðuroy in 1742. Most of the men miracu-

lously survived the wreck.

The stamp issue contains two single

stamps and a two-stamp mini-sheet.

The Faroese artist, Anker Eli Petersen

designed the stamps which also show

items from the wrecked ship: a small

casket made of tortoise shell and a

wooden ironing board. The wood comes

from Westerbeek's ornamental decorati-

on.

On 20 March 2015 a Total Solar Eclipse covered the Faroe Islands in darkness at 9.41 am.

Seeing a total solar eclipse is perhaps one of the most spectacular astronomical and natural phenomena that you will ever see.

alda maGNa comprises four musicians who all live

in the Faroe Islands. The compositions the group perform

are atmospheric wanderings into abstract soundscapes

with references to historical and contemporary music.

aldUbáRaN In 1995 seven young Faroese musicians

formed an ensemble with the main purpose to perform

and promote Faroese music. This ensemble is Aldubáran.

Today Aldubáran has 14 members playing the flute,

clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola,

guitar and piano. This rather untraditional combination

of instruments makes for great diversity in concerts and

gives scope for composers. Aldubáran has commissioned

and premiered a vast number of works by Faroese and

foreign composers which have been well received by

the press and public. Albeit Faroese music plays a major

part in their programmes the masterpieces of the music

literature are equally important. They have performed

works such as Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, Stravinsky’s

Septet, Octet, and A Soldier’s Tale, and Schubert’s Octet.

aNdReaS ReSToRFF studied cello at the Royal

Danish Academy, Copenhagen. Since then he has been

a regular cellist in the Faroese Symphony Orchestra and

has recently also played pop music with artists such as

Teitur and Eivør.

aNGeliKa NielSeN has premiered several new

compositions by Faroese composers as a classical soloist.

She also tours worldwide with folk/world/jazz bands

yggdrasil, Kvonn, Dánjal, Norðan and Norland Wind.

aNNa KaTRiN ØSSURSdÓTTiR eGilSTRØð.

Inspired by raw nature and big city life, Anna Katrin

sculpts her voice in an electronic landscape of

soundscapes and beats. With songs written in Faroese

and English. Normally Anna Katrin performs with vocals

and electronics but for the Concerto Grotto concert it will

be her pure, naked voice that meets with the cave and

the ocean’s roar. Anna Katrin is also known as the singer

in the band valravn.

aRNold lUdViG is a Faroese composer and the

2005 Atlantic Music Event, award winner for Best bassist.

In 1992, he studied Jazz Performance at FIH music

school in Iceland, was awarded a scholarship for Best

performer, and furthered his studies in jazz at McGill

University, in Montreal, Canada, from 1993-95. His cd

releases on Tutl Records include, Arnold Ludvig Sextet,

vOyAGES, in 2013 and ICELAND, in 2016, both have

received great reviews from DK and FO.

blUe GRaSS bRaSS baNd plays compositions

for brass instruments and drum kit by drummer Rógvi á

Rógvu.

dáVUR & aNdRaS A friendship that started in

Tórshavn Brass Band. They went their separate ways

through Europe, and after many years in different

countries they have now put their heads together again

for a special duo project. For the occasion they have

written original works, as well as adapted music from

their classical music heritage.

daNiSh chambeR bRaSS was founded in the

fall of 2013 by 5 young Danish brass players, who all
