Changes to speed lmts for HGshould please frustrated drverTHERES good news for cardrivers this week as the gov-ernment has officially in-creased the single-carriage-way speed limit for heavygoods vehicles to 50mph.

Previously, HGVs were lim-ited to 40mph by law, leavingdrivers tempers to boil overin their cars while stuck in along line of traffic.

AA president EdmundKing said: This seems likea common sense move. Everydriver has probably experi-enced being stuck behind alorry travelling at their legal40mph limit on a single car-riageway main road with anational default speed limitof 60mph for cars.

He went on: This 20mphspeed differential can leadto bunching and dangerousovertaking manoeuvres. Sowe welcome the plans to al-low trucks to legally travel at50mph on these roads to endthis frustrating, dangerous,historic a nomaly.

The government is alsoconsulting on increasing thespeedlimitforlorries ondualcarriageways from 50mph to60mph.

Mr King said an AA/Popu-lus survey showed that 81 percent of drivers did not knowthe legal national speed limitfor lorries on single carriage-way main roads.
