Year of Women in Jazz: Son MonarcasYear of Women in Jazz presents Son Monarcas, a Latin Folk Fusion ensemble led by Mercedes Inez Martinez and Irekani Ferreyra. Son Monarcas is comprised of musicians who are well-versed in the Afro-Mestizo genres of folk music from Latin America and blend the traditional with the contemporary. Their original compositions include influences of Cumbia, Samba, Jazz and Experimental music in English and Spanish.

Grown Folks StoriesGrown Folks Stories, created by Cara Brigandi and Eric Williams, founder and owner of The Silver Room, is two hours of five minute stories that range from the hilarious to the absolutely somber. Come join this ever-popular gathering of nonprofessional, unrehearsed storytellers, who give us the real stories we live everyday. There is no theme, no judging, no poetry, no readings. It’s storytelling that you’ve never experienced before.

Experience Amid Kinship, the culminating exhibition for the 2018-2019 resident artists featuring new works produced during their ten-month residency at the Arts Incubator in Washington Park.

About the artists:

Jarvis BoylandJarvis Boyland (he/him), originally from Memphis, TN, navigates intersections of black identity through portraiture. Boyland’s paintings focus on queer men of color within intimate spaces, sensitively highlighting the nuances of complex interpersonal relationships, identities, and locales. jarvisboyland.com

Brandon BreauxBrandon Breaux (he/him) is a fine artist and multidisciplinary designer from the South Side of Chicago, whose creative experience is comprised of painting, sculpture, web, video, print, and interactive projects. Widely known as the artist behind all three of Chance the Rapper’s iconic album covers, Breaux’s work has a distinct aesthetic for depicting life in Chicago and primarily focuses on providing representation of diverse narratives within the fine art space. brandonbreaux.com

Amina RossAmina Ross (they/them) is an undisciplined creator. They work across mediums, including video installations, sculpture, and curatorial engagements. Ross has exhibited work, spoken on panels, and taught workshops in various spaces throughout the United States. aminaross.com

Game Night hosted by Josue PellotGame Night brings together friends, artists, and community stakeholders to play unique board games that dissect social systems and structures. The main objective is to stimulate challenging conversations in a space set up for fun and creativity. Game players are encouraged to engage on topics that are taboo through healthy, enlightened and entertaining discussions — with education being the end game.

Also, we’ll examine the role disco played in the creation of house music, a genre and culture created in Chicago.

Hear the Changing Voices ensemble’s true stories of adversity and strength in Light In My Darkness, Volume 2: three plot threads, three young lives, and countless chances to make it through the darkest parts. Changing Voices staged readings bring down the house with new songs and stories based on their lives. It’s a unique energy and experience that you’ll never forget.
