We had a fantastic Opening Week! The sound of little footsteps could be heard allaround the Temple early Monday morning as ourFreedom School “Scholars” set foot on the StephenS. Wise Temple campus for the first time. Theywere greeted by our “Good Morning” chant as theystepped off the bus and smiling faces lined thewalkway towards their breakfast room.

Guests included community members who madethe dream of a Freedom School a reality at StephenS. Wise Temple, as well as Temple and School staff. We were honored to be joined by our Senior RabbiEli Herscher, Councilmember Paul Koretz who aidedin our ribbon cutting ceremony, and LAUSD BoardMember Steve Zimmer who was our firstHarambee guest reader.

Though there were a few “first day” jitters as towhat this new program would look and feel likeafter months of planning, the children and staffwere excited for what the day, and week, wouldbring.

We want you to know that our first week was a BIGsuccess! Scholars enjoyed reading their IntegratedReading Curriculum (IRC) books and classroomactivities. They got to know their Servant LeaderInterns (what we call teachers) and other

classmates. They loved the different afternoonenrichment activities, especially swimming in thepool and our field trip to Skirball’s Noah’s Ark!

We are already off to an incredible start for weektwo and we hope you will come and visit us atFreedom School soon!
