PHYSICIANS' ASSISTANTS DIRECTOR NAMEDDr. Mary E. Hawthorne has been appoin-

ted by the University's Board of Trusteesas head of the Physicians' AssistantsProgram. She was formerly assistantdirector of a national study of alliedhealth education and educational advisorto the commander of the U.S. Air ForceSchool of Health Care Sciences atSheppard AFB, Texas. The appointmentis for the year ending June 30, 1976. Dr.Hawthorne succeeds Dr. John Josten whowas critically injured in an automobileaccident last year.

WMU CITED IN CONGRESSIONAL RECORDUniversity Trustee Fred W. Adams of

Grosse Pointe announced at last Friday'sBoard meeting that Michigan CongressmanGarry Brown had had the recent WMUinaugural luncheon remarks inserted inthe June 10 edition of the CongressionalRecord.

Entitled "Western Michigan University--A Success Story in the American Tradition,"the remarks were a rendition of the his-torical development of the Universitygiven by Dr. Russell H. Seibert, emeritusvice president for academic affairs.

FREEDOM TRAIN WILL STOP IN KALAMAZOOOne of the three stops in Michigan

which will be made by the Freedom Trainwill be at 1776 N. Pitcher St. Aftervisits to Detroit and Grand Rapids, thecolorful steam-powered reminder of thenation's past will be in Kalamazoo from6 to 10 p.m. on July 10, and from 8 a.m.to midnight on July 11 and 12.

Tickets are priced at $2 for adultsand $1 for those 18 and under, or over65. Children under three will be admit-ted free. Campus sales for the ticketsare being handled by the/University Stu-dent Center Office.

The 10-car display featuring 200years of American history includesseveral hundred exhibits. They rangefrom George Washington's copy of theconstitution to Hank Aaron's bat.

The original site for the FreedomTrain's visit was adjacent to the WMUcampus near Waldo Stadium, but was laterchanged to the Pitcher St. locationbecause of anticipated traffic hazards.

NEW BASEBALL COACH SELECTEDFred Decker, assistant baseball coach

and one of the Broncos' all-time outfieldstars, has been named head baseball coachby the University's Board of Trustees.He succeeds Bill Chambers who has resignedto devote full time to teaching as anassociate professor of physical educationfor men.

"It's an exciting challenge and a greatopportunity for me, personally," saidDecker, who has been assistant coach forthe past eight years. He is a native ofColon who earned second team All-Americanand first team All-District honors in1963 and 1964. He coached at PortageCentral High School for two years afterhis graduation.

of $1,199,765 in gifts and grants, theBoard of Trustees was informed at theirmeeting Friday, June 20. The total in-cludes $236,706 for instruction; $12,646for research; $922,949 for student finan-cial aid; $1,900 for public service; and$25,562 in other gifts.

BOARD APPOINTS COMMITTEEThe University's Board of Trustees has

appointed its own academic affairs commit-tee. The members are John R. Dykema, GrossePointe Farms, chairman; Mildred L. Johnson,Muskegon; and Maury E. Parfet, HickoryCorners.
