TRAIL MANNERS

Good manners is the grease that helps people get along with each other avoiding friction. UNDER 16 MUST WEAR A HELMET. Be aware of the effect your actions have on oth-

ers, their horses and their property. Do not upset your co-rider’s horses. Ride at a quiet, controlled pace. NEVER PASS OTHERS AT A GALLOP. Keep a safe distance… don’t crowd others. STAY WITH A DISMOUNTED RIDER Respect the property of others. (ie: lawns, farm

fields, crops, groves, livestock, etc.) Leave gates as you found them: Open gates

should remain open. Closed gates should remain closed.

DO NOT PASS THE TRAIL BOSS or drop behind the drag rider.

Stay with the trail boss on the same side of the road. Do not split the road.

Clean up after your horse. Pick up manure or spread it depending on where you are. Do not clean your trailers out when you unload.

NO PROFANITY ON ANY SFTR EVENTS. REMEMBER! If you mind your manners others won’t mind when you and your horse return to ride.

HORSE CHARITIES

The SFTR donates to these charities once a year. These charities are badly in need of donations. Please try to send what you can to help them. Thanks from the SFTR.

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

BOTTLE CAPS DONATIONS

Terry Schulte received the bottle caps and sent an e-mail thanking everyone at the club for collecting them. She asked us to continue to collect them and they do not all have to be white, you can collect different colors of bottle caps. Please let us all continue to help her build benches for schools. Hopefully with the next news-letter we will be able to send some pictures of the benches that they are making! Thank you all for your continued support. My thanks to Cesar Saavedra for sending out the package of the caps to Terry!

Hello Trail Riders, We had a great turn out for the Freedom Walk. Great to see everyone there, remembering a time that touch everyone of us. Thank you to everyone that help organize the event. Thank you to our Varela FFA group that help carry our banner and walk with us honoring this day. Thanks to all the Flag bearers - it was wonderful seeing all of the flags out on the parade a hot day but we did it and did it well. We have a lot of activities on our calender. Activities include an obstacle course, yard sale at Robbie's , and plenty of trail rides this October. This year Carolina and I will be hosting a afternoon Halloween ride on the 29th -so get your costumes ready- there will be a contest for the best costume and a menu that will continue as a tradi-tion- pulled pork. We will notify everyone on the time and address in Homestead. This information will be posted on our SFTR Facebook page. Please don't forget to renew your memberships and spread the news about our club. See you all on the trail, Nelson Rodriguez President

MEMBER CARDS TAKE 6-8 WEEKS TO PROCESS.

SUNSHINE REPORT

We have condolences to send out to several SFTR members who have lost their pets or their riding buddies. Christy Torres sadly had to put Duke down in August. Michelle Byriel and Tim lost their beloved cat “Jim Beam” August 18th. Jennifer Dachton lost her “Momma dog.” Jennifer had rescued her years ago on Krome Avenue and gave her a loving home and found homes for her pups. Diane Patenaude lost Chewie at the age of 17. Chewie passed with his dad while Diane was in Maine. Congratulations are in order for Leyanes and Rolado Lopez on the birth of their new nephew Carlos! Debra, Raven & Erin Davis lost their kitty, Minion, to severe anemia. My team at work received a 50K grant to build a life skills gym at the University of Miami Hospital. The gym will help many of our patients get home more quickly and with more confidence after orthopedic or neurolog-ical surgery with increased ability to meet their needs after practicing the skills of daily living with their therapists. Take care everyone!

VIETNAM VETERANS FLAG ADDED TO OUR FIELD OF FLAGS

At the September General Meeting, the South Florida Trail Riders dedicated a new flag to join the Field of Flags we now carry in parades and other events. The new flag is the Flag of the Vietnam Veterans. It joins the American Flag, State Flag, POW/MIA Flag, Army Flag, Marines Flag, Navy Flag, Air Force Flag, Coast Guard Flag, and the SFTR Flag. This new flag was dedicated to SFTR friend and Vietnam Veteran Ralph West. Ralph and his wife Lois were on hand for the unfurling for the first time. Ralph served in combat and was wounded. Ralph rides horses, is a western artist, his-torian, and collector. He lives in Redland. Recently he and Lois single handedly made it possible to build and dedicate a memorial to all the Miami-Dade men and women killed in Vietnam. He also financed the pro-ject. Vietnam Veterans are sometimes referred to as the “Forgotten Veterans”. However, as far as the SFTR goes, they will never be forgot-ten. The Flag will be at the October general meeting to give everyone the opportunity to see this beautiful flag.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Freedom Walk 2016

As the SFTR tradition that it has become, once again we joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Homestead Post 4127 Sunday September 11 for a day of remembrance for the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and their families, and the hundreds of first responders who were also killed that day. Foremost in our minds as well, were the over 6,800 men and women of the Armed Forces killed since 2001 in the war against terrorism. We are doing our part to make sure these victims are not forgotten. This year we had 49 members check-in. thirty rode their horses (twelve carried flags. Six of the Juniors rode horses or ponies. Seven other Juniors walked the parade route. We also had the help from five members who assisted with ground support. Once again we also had the valuable help of the Felix Varela members of the Future Farmers of America. They were there early that day and assisted with various duties. They also walked the entire parade route and carried the SFTR Banner. SFTR members JC and Lynn Vina, of Vina Meat Distributors, donated 320 qt. lb. burgers to the VFW for the lunch after the parade. Other generous merchants donated pizza, ice cream, so-das, and water. Bonny George Jr., co-Trail Boss, and I would like to thank everyone who made this year’s Freedom Walk a great one. Our hats off for the VFW Auxiliary who did a magnificent job of coordinating the event. Auxiliary President Stephanie Rae, and Jodi Nerney are to be com-mended for this year’s Freedom Walk. Hope to see you at next year’s Freedom Walk.

ing took place in September. So far the fol-lowing people have come on board for this worthy and fun project: Megan Barnes, Mike Maldonado, Sylvia Cruz-Alvarez, Do-mingo Hernandez, David Ruiz (my co-Trail Boss), and Bonny George Jr. Jingle Bells Jaunt founder Carrie Hershberger will also be available to help in any way she can. The SFTR Annual Christmas Toy Drive will kick-off October 15, culminating with the tradi-tional Jingle Bells Jaunt on December 10. This year we are partnering with Kegs South of Homestead to collect at least 1,000 toys for needy children in the Homestead, Redland, Flor-ida City, Goulds, Naranja, Princeton, and other parts of South Dade. We are keeping it all local. The kick-off will be hosted by Kegs South, 27591 S. Dixie Hwy, Homestead. FL. The entire family is invited to this family friendly festive event featuring music, good food, raffles, auction, and a free Kegs South fa-mous hamburger for everyone bringing an un-wrapped, new toy with a minimum value of $10. We might get lucky and Santa may drop by to provide photo opportunities with all the children and adults in attendance. Dougie Hitchcock from Thunder Radio 100.3 FM will be broadcasting live from Kegs South that day and might bring his radio personality cow “Jezabelle” with him. The Christmas Toy Drive Committee needs helpers. We will have a short meeting in early October to coordinate our efforts. Our first meet-

TROPICAL PARK HURRICANE STALLS Yes, Hurricane Season is here and following are a few things to consider. First! Reserve your stalls with Debi Cat-Priest. When a Hurricane Watch goes into effect, the barn manager, Pablo Tejeda, will attempt to reach every-one to confirm that you will take possession of your stall. If unsuccessful, he will reassign your stall for that hurri-cane to someone else. Please call him either way at 305-554-7334 and leave a message. Your reservation fee per stall is $26.00. This reserves a stall for the 2016 Hurricane Season. Once a Hurricane Watch goes into effect and you take possession of your stall, on the 25th hour you will owe Miami-Dade County an additional daily fee, plus an additional $26.00 to re-reserve your stall for the remainder of the 2016 Season. Upon arrival, Pablo will need to see your Coggins papers. Suggested items are flashlight, buckets with clips for water, (muck buckets work), a fly mask, your name, horse’s name and phone #’s tapped to your stall doors, halter, written on your horse, etc. You can’t leave anything but your horse at Tropical Park. Depending on the storm’s estimated arrival, Miami-Dade County will lock the park gates. Once the Hurricane Watch is lifted, you have 48 hours to remove your horse. All stalls must be cleaned before leaving or an addi-tional charge per stall will be applied and you will be unable to reserve stalls in the future. Hope to see you on the trail – not at Tropical Park! Have a great summer! Debi Catarineau-Priest 305.274.7484

PARADE TEAM NEWS

Veteran's Day Parade Our homestead veteran’s day parade is only a few weeks away on friday, Nov. 11th, and we hope to see lots of familiar and new faces! Like last year, we will be parking across from the VFW which hosts the 9/11 Memorial Walk. We would like to acknowledge our club’s own veterans by having them dress in uni-form for this parade. If you are already a part of our parade team, remember your parade tack and service uniform for this parade. Since this is an open parade, if you don’t have a parade or service uniform and want to join us, wear black pants, white long-sleeved button-down shirt and cowboy hat/helmet and please join us! If you love a parade but don't want to bring a horse, we can always use side-walkers! Team members wear your parade outfits and/or service uniforms and if you want to carry a flag please let me know. Arrive by 10:30am and the parade starts at 12pm. Meet at the field across from the vfw in homestead (601 NE 2nd Road,) south of Campbell Drive on US1. It will be your first street to the right about a block down. You will be turning a hard right on se 6th Ave. Drive down a short distance and you will see a field on your right. If you are driving from Krome, go to Campbell West pass the Busway and make your 2nd right turn. That will be NE 1st Road. Drive down a little ways and the parking area will be on your left. Make sure you park with the SFTR as we are sharing this field with other horse groups. We always have a great time and will enjoy lunch af-terward. Make sure you contact me so I know you are going to ride or volun-teer in this parade. We need at least 8 flag carri-ers in our team outfit. We hope to see you there! Badger is a victim of abandonment, malnutrition and neglect. He was found with Dawn on March 20, 2016. Check back soon for more information on him, has good ground manners, stands for the farrier, no problem with cross ties, and gets along well with oth-er horses. Under saddle he has a smooth trot and can-ter. 7/21/2016 UPDATE: His assessment is that he must have suffered abuse under saddle previously and has lost his trust in people. After Badger was worked with on the ground, he ultimately relaxed prior to be-ing ridden and did very nicely in his riding session Contact Laurie at [email protected] for adoption info. The award winning professional rawhide braider Pablo Lozano was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Lozano relates his success to the time spent during childhood in the family ranch in Tandil, and his inquisitive nature about Argentina’s cultural legacy. Initially Lozano started creating small items such as bracelets and knife handles and selling them to friends. While he was building a reputation founded on solid work ethics, while perfect-ing techniques and constantly learning how to produce the highest quality rawhide gear. In 1985, Lozano began his career as a full-time rawhide braider. The tradition of rawhide braiding has a long history in Argenti-na and continues to evolve uninterrupted through generations. Rawhide braiding can be traced to Spain’s first attempt to colo-nize South America when the Spanish settlers brought shiploads of livestock from Europe to the Pampas, a vast region with an abundance of pastures and an ideal climate for livestock produc-tion. With the proliferation of livestock emerged the need for the Gaucho, the horseman of the Pampas, a skillful individual in all rural activities. Through the years the cattle ranches were built and proved to be productive establishments and as result the Gaucho handcrafted specialized gear to cope with the needs of the cattle industry by utilizing rawhide. This skills were safeguarded and hand down to future generations by word of mouth. Lozano was always observant and eager to learn rawhide braid-ing from the hire hands in his family’s ranch. At the age of 15, he noticed that one of his schoolmates had started learning how to braid and the youngster informed Lozano he was receiving in-struction from the late Don Luis Alberto Flores, who later became Lozano’s mentor. Moreover, Flores always encouraged Lozano to adhere to the tradition of excellence and to associate with like-minded people with high aspirations. Lozano regularly bounced ideas off and felt inspired by Flores, over time solidifying a life-long relationship. (Photo of Don Luis Alberto Flores by Daniel Sempe). Lozano’s inquisitive nature and ranching background launched him into creating fine gear for discerning horsemen and their horses, to compete in national shows, where Lozano’s traditional rawhide braided gear gained popularity. Lozano enjoyed a gradu-al evolution into custom braid work orders consisting of one-of-a-kind headstalls, reins, bosals, hobbles, cinchas, and reatas to name a few items. Lozano’s traditional handmade masterpieces are rec-ognized for its dependable use and unique beauty due to his com-mand of numerous rawhide braiding techniques and creative tal-ent, gained by a lifetime dedicated to his chosen profession. Lozano believes that rawhide gear is made to be used and his philosophy is that preparation of the hides is critical to guarantee top quality goods. Also, highlights that is the hide that dictates its application and not the braider. For Lozano it is a pre-requisite to start with quality hides for the best yield and cut no corners as the hides are being processed from their raw state to achieve the best possible rawhide. The goal is to handcraft the highest quality rawhide gear, because it’s an honor to continue the tradition by making the best goods. Tra-ditions continue to evolve as one blends ancient techniques with creativity to handcraft one-of-a-kind pieces without compromis-ing the function or durability, because as artist that will be one’s legacy. Lozano has participated in trade shows and exhibits throughout Argentina and has received numerous awards for his traditional

rawhide braiding since 1995, to include the best Braider of the Year 2007 in Argentina. Furthermore, Lozano has been recog-nized by the Academy of Western Artists (AWA) during their 20th Annual Will Rogers Awards, was selected Braider of the Year 2015. Lozano’s skill, talent and knowledge has helped training and mentoring several aspiring braiders from his shop in Tandil. Al-so, has assisted braiders from Australia, Brazil, Germany, Uru-guay and the United States during workshops. Braiders seek his advice and constructive criticism in Facebook, despite the idio-matic barriers. He starts his workshops by encouraging all partic-ipants to let him know what they would like to learn. And he encourages learning from someone who have already achieved success in the trade. He believes in the concept of apprenticeships and has had sev-eral apprentices as a means to educate and identify those that possess the skill and dedication required to execute the precise braiding that becomes a work of art, in an effort to safeguard the cultural legacy for future generations. Several of Lozano’s creations had been awarded “best of show” because his traditional rawhide showcases the skillful execution of numerous techniques, and excellence in craftsmanship. In 2004, thanks to the support of friends and fellow braiders Leland Hensley, Nate Wald and Mike Beaver, and under the aus-pice of the Traditional Cowboy Arts Association (TCAA), was invited to participate in a braiding seminar at the National Cow-boy & Western Heritage Museum (NC&WHM) in Oklahoma City, OK. During the visit Lozano had the privilege to meet members of the TCAA present during the exhibit. He was im-pressed by their work, the member’s creativity, optimism and passion for the Western heritage. Lozano was also impressed by the partnerships forged between the TCAA and the NC&WHM, and their goal to preserve and promote the Western heritage with a focus in bit & spur making, saddle making, silversmithing and rawhide braiding. The alliance has generated interest in these trades and the TCAA. Upon return to Argentina Lozano started learning about the practical applications of the rawhide gear utilized by the Vaquer-os and their influence in the Western heritage. Lozano credits friends Leland Hensley and Nate Wald for their assistance which helped him gained an understanding of the applications of the gear utilized by horsemen in the United States. Subsequently, in 2008 Lozano applied and became a member of the TCAA, the organization that has been committed to the critical mission of safeguarding the Western Heritage and traditional trades through education. Lozano believes that “every artist is a craftsman, how-ever not all craftsmen are artist, they are separated by their crea-tivity”. He added that all members of the TCAA are artist that deserve credit not only for the one-of-a-kind artwork they create for the annual exhibit but for their contributions to the industry. Also, their role as educators in furtherance of their chosen trade is commendable, this will be the TCAA and its member’s legacy! Since 2009, when Lozano’s rawhide braid work was first ex-hibited in the TCAA show he has made an effort to create pieces in collaboration with fellow TCAA members, because he is pas-sionate about rawhide braiding and proud to be a member of the TCAA. Lozano would like his legacy to be the advancement of rawhide braiding for the enjoyment of future generations. ~Domingo Hernandez
