Teach My People To Pray

Hay

Back on the farm, by the month of October, all the hay for the year was stacked neatly in the barn.

The hay was generally a mixture of alfalfa, clover, timothy, and other grasses. Cows liked it. It

was a lot of work for us. Now we mostly see large outdoor bunkers of chopped alfalfa, but there

may be a few of you who remember slinging the dry, loose hay into hay mows. Others remember

the small bales which we stacked into barns. As a sixty-pound kid, the sixty pound bales were a

fair match. With fine weather and timely rains, the third cutting of the season was smaller by size

than the first two cuttings, but more nutritious. “That’ll put some milk in the bucket,” ---was the

best compliment the hay could get! I recall an incident when a skunk got packed into a bale of

hay. That was not a pleasant situation; especially for the skunk. Someone had the gruesome task of

cutting open the bale to extract and bury the carcass.

Why am I telling you this? Well, this annual report gives the financial story of the fiscal year of

July 2016 to June 2017. Metaphorically, we are now in the next season. You can help make it a

good, generous and nutritious harvest; or you can let it slide by with leafless, hollow stems. No

one wants to be left with the “skunk bale.” We need the best quality and nutrition to grow our

ministry and mission of bringing the Good News of Jesus to everyone! When considering your

gift to Saint Nicholas, count your blessings and give back to God from the first fruits of your

blessings. Try giving the value of your first hour of work each week! For someone working forty

hours per week, that would be one quarter of a tithe (2.5%) “That’ll put some milk in the bucket!”

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of our family. Enlighten our hearts and minds

that we may live more fully this vocation of love. In our daily life and work, may

we reflect the self-giving love which you, O Father, eternally show with your Son

and the Holy Spirit. Let your love be evident in the peace that reigns in our home

and in the faith we profess and live. May our family always be a place of generosity,

understanding, forgiveness and joy. Kindly give us the wisdom and courage to be

witnesses to your eternal design for the family; and grant that the Holy Family of

Nazareth may always guide our path to holiness as a family. We ask this through

our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the

Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen
