The original Honmaru Goten Palace was built in the early Edo period,

though it was lost to fire later. The current building, relocated during

the Meiji period, is the former home of the Katsuranomiya Imperial

family. Take in the differences between the Honmaru and Ninomaru:

The former features an elegant court noble style including the gently

sloping roof. (Note that the interior is closed to visitors).

All About Nijo-jo CastleKyoto Recommends Selections

Nijo-jo Castle was built in 1603 as Kyoto residence for the first shogun of the Edo period,

Tokugwa Ieyasu, and as a government military base from which protection was afforded to the

court. In 1626, the castle was expanded ahead of an imperial visit. The impressive wall paint-

ings, which are still in existence today, were also done at this time as a show of the power of the

shogun. Notably, the castle served as the location where the last shogun, Tokugawa Yoshino-

bu, declared the return of the power to the emperor in 1867, marking the Meiji Restoration.

The castle therefore served as witness to both the beginning and the end of the 260-year-long

Edo period. This castle is an excellent example of the architecture of the period of Japanese

history of some 400 years ago, particularly the Ninomaru Goten Palace, which is considered a

national treasure. It was also registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

While respectful of the emperor, the

Tokugawa shogunate at the same time did

not hesitate to fully exercise its power. The

reason behind the political longevity of the

Tokugawa was the delicate balance

between the military government and the

court. This balance is apparent in various

aspects of Nijo-jo Castle.

Samurai and court nobles

The exterior features white walls, turrets,

and a moat, all of which create a castellated

look. The interior, however, is finished in

the palace style. The great appeal of Nijo-jo

Castle lies in the fact that it combines the

style of the samurai and that of the court

nobles.

Mixture of castle and palace

During the Edo period, Nijo-jo Castle was owned

by the Tokugawa shogunate, but as of the Meiji

period it came under the jurisdiction of the

Imperial Household Ministry. It is therefore

decorated with the crests of both the Tokugawa

family (hollyhock) and the Imperial family

(chrysanthemum). Nijo-jo Castle is the only castle

in Japan where this combination exists.

Overview of the Castle InteriorThe Karamon Gate that stands to the front of the Ninomaru Goten

Palace was built for an imperial visit in the early Edo period. The

elaborate gate features a magnificent cypress bark roof in the

karahafu (Chinese-style cusped gable) style in both front and back. It

is also decorated with elaborate carving and fine gold work. Its

original glimmer and brilliant color were restored by repairs

completed in 2013.

The carving represents the wish for the prosperity of

the Tokugawa family. Cranes, turtles, and butterflies

symbolize longevity, while the shishi (mythical lion-dog)

was believed to protect important places.

Ninomaru Goten PalaceThis building, a national treasure erected in 1603 when the castle

was first built, is perhaps the foremost highlight of the castle

grounds. Inside, witness rooms of gorgeous wall paintings and other

decorations that serve to remind the visitor of the incredible power

of the shogun.

Like the Main Gate, the

castle watchtower is typical

of samurai architecture. It is

even equipped with a

boulder drop, though this

feature was

never used in

battle. TonansumiyaguraSituated just south of the Main Gate, this tower is a grandiose

presence in white plaster walls and triangular gables. It has

been designated by the government as an important cultural

asset.

Hollyhock Chrysanthemum

This is the primary entranceway to Nijo-jo Castle, situated facing

east as if view the Kyoto Imperial Palace. This imposing gate of

approximately 24 meters is a government-recognized important

cultural asset.

A palace of massive scale and a national treasureClose up

of NinomaruGoten Palace The Ninomaru Goten Palace, known for its large size, has about 33 rooms with a total

floor area of some 3,300 square meters and 800 tatami. The Tozamurai, located at the

entranceway, served as a waiting room for visiting daimyo (feudal lords). Here one can

witness a striking painting of a tiger. At the north side are rooms used by court messen-

gers. The Shikidai was the room where the retainers of the shogun received gifts from

the daimyo. The pines found in the wall paintings represent the authority of the Tokuga-

wa shogunate. The Ohiroma was originally used as the most public space in the castle,

where the shogun would meet with daimyo. Though it is difficult to view from the aisle

for visitors, the double-coffered ceiling over the room of the shogun is also a sight

worth seeing. The Kuroshoin served as a reception room for those daimyo close to the

shogun; for this reason calm and gentle scenes were chosen for the wall paintings. The

innermost room is known as the Shiroshoin. Only individuals very close to the shogun

were permitted to enter this room. The pillars at the Kuroshoin are

covered in decorative fittings

that hide the nails on these

pillars. Numbering 200-plus, all

of these fittings are of different

designs, including combina-

tions of patterns and images

such as phoenixes.

Kuro-Shoin

Ninomaru Garden is an invaluable example of early Edo

period gardens, and as such has been designated by the

government as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty. It was built

with the view from the windows of the Ohiroma and

Kuroshoin in mind. The gardens exhibit a stunning variety of

shapes and colors of the stones at the pond’s edge, and at the

same time symbolize the strength and power of the samurai.

The tour route takes visitors first through public rooms and then to the more private rooms of the shogun. You may

notice changes in the subject and mood of the artwork.

either side of a 35-centimeter-thick

board: peacocks on the south side

and peonies on the north side.

The walls and sliding screens of the palace are magnificently decorat-

ed with some 2,000 panels by artists of the Kano school, renowned

painters of the early Edo period, amongst which 1,016 have been

designated important cultural assets. Rooms utilized depended on

the rank of a particular guest as well as how close they were to the

shogun. For this reason the rooms differ in terms of wall paintings,

subject matter of the art, the impression they exude, etc.

The original wall paintings of Ninomaru Goten Palace,

painted 400 years ago, are being replaced by replications at

a steady pace due to increasingly visible signs of aging and

damage. Some of the restored wall paintings are exhibited

here. Visitors are treated to paintings up close that had been

only visible from the hallway inside the palace. The exhibit

here re-creates the vast indoor spaces of the palace. Gazing

at the majestic large wall paintings, visitors may even feel as

if they are actually inside the palace rooms.

The Kyoto City Bus traveling in Kyoto city has a large number of routes and bus services, so it is convenient for sightseeing. Please check the route number for your destination beforehand.

You can travel any number of times throughout one day within the City Bus and Kyoto Bus flat-fare zone. *Ohara, Takao, Kibune/Kurama areas are outside of the flat-fare zone.

grounds. In the public viewing period,

visitors will be able to pay their respects

at both the Main Hall (Hon-den) and

Auxiliary Hall (Gon-den), and may also

view religious treasures and paintings in

the Offering Preparations Hall (Cho-

noya, an important cultural property).

Kamogawa River noryo-yuka is an ongoing Kyoto summer

tradition dating back to the Edo period. Enjoy not only the

view of the mountains by the waterfront but also an array

of delicious dishes.

Kamogawa River Noryo-yuka(Riverside Terrace Dining)

Considered to be one of Japan’s three major

festivals, the Gion Matsuri Festival is a ritual

festival of the Yasaka Jinja Shrine, which is

located at the east end of Shijo Street. The

festival got its start with the plague of 869,

when the people prayed to the deity of the

shrine for deliverance from the illness. The

highlight of the festival is the yama hoko junko

float procession, which are held twice, on July

17 and 24. Out of 33 floats, 29 are designated

as the important tangible folk-cultural properties, and the floates are

decorated with beautiful tapestry, carpet. and fabrics. This magnificent

scene is often described as a “moving museum.”

This religious ceremony marks the return of departed souls

who had visited their loved ones on Obon. Also a summer

Kyoto tradition, it involves the breathtaking bonfire of

Japanese characters and other images on the ring of five

The city of Kyoto has five distinct geisha districts perpetuating this time-honored tradition: Gion Kobu, Pontocho, Miyagawa-cho, Kamishichiken, and Gion Higashi. Each of these different areas is home to kyo-machiya traditional townhouses, which means they retain a traditional warm atmosphere. In the geisha districts, these artists dance and sing at banquets in a special form of hospitality for the guests. Maiko, meanwhile, are apprentice geisha. The world of geisha and maiko is charac-terized by a set of special manners and customs. D u r i n g t h e d ay t i m e , they practice dance, shamisen, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, and more, performing these arts at banquets.
