FROM THE PRINCIPAL SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT
We have a comprehensive improvement plan that sets out directions that we are
consistently working on to improve academic performance for all students at
Freeling Primary School.
There are three main goals in the plan:
1. To improve student achievement in reading across the school.
Our challenge to improve practice is to explicitly teach phonics using Jolly Phonics
in the early years and reading comprehension strategies across the school so that
we see an improvement in student achievement in reading.
- Students will demonstrate phonemic awareness.
- Students develop a range of strategies to decode unknown words including the
ability to blend and segment words phonetically.
- Students with reading difficulties will be provided with intervention and will
demonstrate progress.
- Students across the school will be able to articulate and use a range of
comprehension strategies.
2. To improve student achievement in writing across the school.
If we implement the explicit teaching of grammar using the Jolly Grammar scope
and sequence, then we will see further improvement in student achievement in
writing.
- We will see improvement in student writing skills, specifically we will see
students progressively demonstrating:
- awareness of purpose and audience,
- greater use of compound and complex sentences to convey ideas and concepts,
- use of increasingly sophisticated vocabulary,
- control over use of punctuation to convey ideas,
- transferring knowledge of spelling into written work.
3. To improve student achievement in mathematics, particularly in the
number strand, across the school.
If we use the Big Ideas in Number sequence and explicitly teach those strategies,
then we will see further improvement in student achievement in mathematics.
- We will see students improving their ability to demonstrate relevant elements of
the Australian Curriculum - both in content and in proficiency strands.
- When working mathematically students will demonstrate developmentally
appropriate understanding of the Big Ideas in Number.
Please ask your child’s teacher or a member of the school leadership team if you
have any questions about these improvement goals in relation to your child’s
progress. One of the measures of our success in reaching these goals will be in
analysing NAPLAN data when it is received.

COVID-19 UPDATE
With recent news of further outbreaks we need to keep in mind ways to continue to keep our school
community safe. Following directions from the Department for Education and SA Health, these
requirements must remain in place:
1. Students and staff must stay home if they are unwell.
2. Adults, including parents, must continue to physical distance wherever possible, including at drop off
and pick-up time or when attending school events or meetings. Parents are asked not to come onto the
school grounds before 3.00pm and leave ASAP after drop-off and pick-up.
3. The current increased cleaning at school will continue.
4. All adults, including staff and parents, are expected to use the COVID Safe Check-In (QR codes) when
entering school grounds or classrooms/buildings (QR codes are displayed in various places throughout
the school).
5. All volunteers must continue to sign in at the front office.
We thank you for your ongoing support with COVID safe measures.
Kind Regards
Ken Randall

Simultaneous Story Time - “Give me some Space”
All over Australia and New Zealand, children read and shared the book Give Me some Space by Philip Bunting for National Simultaneous Story Time. At Freeling, NSST was celebrated with buddy classes getting together for some fun space activities and classes watched a video of the staff performance of the book. It was a great way to celebrate books and the love of reading.
