Gardening Delights Spring has finally arrived!

Flowers are in bloom, and the area is brimming with garden-ing events this Mother’s Day Weekend to entice and inspire gardeners.

SchuylervilleThe largest event is

Schuylerville’s Gardener’s Weekend on Saturday, May 12.

This year’s event celebrates the Lilacs of Schuylerville – an array of 30 varieties – one of which has been growing in the village since the Revolutionary War.

Taking place at the Fort Hardy Park Youth Center, the event opens at 9 a.m. with the Schuylerville Garden Club’s Plant Sale and Lilac Sale. The sale will continue until noon.

Visitors are encouraged to

take the “Lilac Walking Tour” through the village. Maps of the tour are available in the village at Schuyler Sweets, Olde Saratoga Wine and Spirits and old Saratoga Books, as well as at the Saratoga Springs Visitor Center.

At 10 a.m., children are invit-ed to plant a surprise for Mother’s Day.

Also at 10 a.m., Jeff Young, curator of the University of Vermont’s Lilac Collection, will introduce the public to the “Lilacs of Schuylerville” with a virtual tour. The town’s lilacs include more than 30 specimens that were planted throughout the village over the past four years. Sponsored by individuals and Schuylerville organiza-tions, the lilacs were planted by the Future Farmers of America from the Schuylerville Central School and the Schuyler Farms Garden Center. At the Schuyler House, visitors can take a glimpse of a much older lilac that is believed to have been planted during the Revolutionary War.

The featured presentation by Dr. Roger Hangarter will take place at 11:30 a.m. Hangarter’s “Secrets of the Garden” talk will include his award-winning time-lapse photographs from his dynamic exhibit “Slowlife,” which debuted at the National Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C. in 2009. Hangarter, a pro-fessor of biology at Indiana University, will show photos that illustrate the almost imper-ceptible movement of the plant world.

At 1:30 p.m., Jeff Young will discuss “Hands-on Planting and Care of Lilacs.” Tea scones will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Gardener’s Weekend also includes crafters and vendors. The weekend concludes on Sunday with special sales and events at the four Schuylerville area garden shops: Schuyler Farm, The Olde Saratoga Home and Garden Center, Garden Views, and the Fish Creek Garden Shoppe.

For more information, con-tact Mary Roberts at 518-695-6923 or [email protected] or visit www.schuylerville-chamber.org.

n Several other gar-den events and plant sales are taking place this weekend.

ArgyleIn Argyle, the Friends of the

Argyle Free Library will hold a Plant and Bake Sale from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 12, at the Argyle Rescue Squad. Perennial plants and a variety of baked goods will be offered, with proceeds benefiting the Friends of the Argyle Library. The sale will be held rain or shine.

StillwaterThe Friends of the Stillwater

Free Library will host their Third Annual Plant Sale Fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, at the library’s parking lot. Assorted bulbs and ground cover from local gardeners and garden shops will be offered. Held rain or shine, proceeds from the event will support the library.

Greenwich In Greenwich, the Greenwich

Garden Group will hold its Spring Plant and Garden Sale from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 12, at the picnic area behind the Greenwich Town Office.

Plant and garden item dona-tions will be accepted for this sale from 8:30 to 9 a.m. on May 12. Proceeds from the sale will support the Greenwich Garden Group’s Library Programs and the ongoing beautification and maintenance of the library gar-dens. For more information, contact Dona Barth at 692-1285, or email [email protected].

Delaware and Hudson Company: An American Success Story,” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15. The presenta-tion will be given at the Cambridge Depot on Broad Street, across from the Cambridge Hotel.

This wide-ranging discussion of the history and influence of the D&H railroad will include numerous D&H objects on dis-play as well as a short slide show of the later years of this once great railroad.

Much more than a railroad, the D&H was at the forefront of the industrial revolution in America. The company devel-oped the first steam locomotive in America and the first indus-try-owned canal. By the late 1890s, it was a powerful railroad that owned the city trolleys of the Capital District as well as the hotels and steamboats on Lake George and Lake Champlain.

Mark Urbaetis’ grandfather and great-grandfather worked for the D&H as a locomotive engineer and freight conductor, respectively. He has been col-lecting D&H history and memo-

open to all ages, with donations to the historical society accept-ed. For more information, visit www.wchs-ny.org.
