FHW – President’s Remarks. In April we held an event in conjunction with the Montpelier Herb, Tea and Arts festival. We had 121 participants on a nice day. Several club members enjoyed a high tea social while others did some shopping at the numerous vendors’ booths. I got a couple tomato plants that are growing real well. We had a couple who geocached at our February event, who joined the club at this event. Welcome. We also had three or four walkers who hadn’t walked in years get back into volksmarching at this event. All in all this was a success for us and the festival. The organizers are already interested in us coming back. At our May meeting we held our annual elections and, to little surprise, all four of us Tom, Linda, Bill and I will be back running the club. It’s hard to believe this will be 10 years as president. I’m thankful that we have such an active club. In our 15 in 15 focus this year, we are planning to do group walks of our YREs. On March 14, we hosted the Annapolis Amblers and Seneca Sugarloafers for a Pi day walk at Brookside Gardens. See the photo of our group in the latest American Wanderer. Over the Memorial Day weekend we held group walks at St Mary’s and Frederick. I’m sorry that I was not able to attend either. Thanks Charlotte for hosting the walkers at Frederick for a social time afterwards. On June 13th Lou DiMenna is organizing a van trip to Cambridge and Denton. On August 15th we are planning a group event at Sykesville. Please make plans to attend this one. We are now getting ready for our next event on National Trails Day (and D-Day) June 6th at Kinder Farm Park. We have some real nice new trails with a lot of variety. After the walk at around 4:00 pm, we’ll hold a club picnic. Should be a fun time and hope the weather cooperates. Also note the farm at Kinder Farm Park is open for tours that day. That afternoon the MVA will hold their quarterly meeting, so you can join it until our picnic starts. We should be discussing the convention and next year’s Atlantic Region Conference that Maryland is hosting. Look for opportunities to volunteer for this conference, since as one of the largest clubs, we’ll be expected to contribute accordingly. The Atlantic Region Conference will be held in Hagerstown the weekend of March 19th 2016. In May we held an email election for the Atlantic Region Director, and Tom Jackson as the only candidate, was re-elected. Please also note that Sandy Lynch has stepped up to be Vice President of the MVA taking over the position held by Skip Coburn, and Phill Wilder will be the MVA Vice President for Publicity and Public Relations. On the national front, the AVA was part of the San Antonio Big Give on May 5th and received donations of $39,682 plus a $30,000 match which will go a long ways to help them. Thanks to all who contributed. Also note at our June club meeting we will be voting on the measures to be decided at the AVA convention. We’ll present our will of the club to Bob Schmick who will represent us as our proxy. We will give Bob $300 towards his convention expenses for representing us. At our April meeting the club approved donating $200 to the Queens Chapel United Methodist church for hosting our February event, $100 to the Friends of Kinder Farm Park to help restore the farmhouse, and $300 to the United Methodist church of Savage where our club meetings are held. Everyone please keep Lynne Haffner and her family in your thoughts and prayers as she continues to recover from a stroke. Please join us for our Club Business meetings at 7:30pm the second Thursday of each month at the Savage United Methodist Church, where you can have a say in what we do, and enjoy some good refreshments. Please also attend our Events meeting at 6:30pm the first Thursday of the month at the

Laurel-Russett Bob Evans for dinner and discussion, where you can help us with the direction of our events and activities. FHW is always looking for some new volunteers who would like to help the club with our various committees. Most volunteers for the committees and YREs have been in their positions for years, and some help with multiple jobs. These positions only take a couple hours a month if that long, and we’d love some fresh ideas and talent to help support our club. Please contact any POC or club officer if you can help us out. Thanks to all our many volunteers, without whom we couldn’t do all that we do. Freestate is a little different in that we look beyond just walking events, and actively promote the social aspect, whether it’s an educational side trip or the chance to catch up with our walking friends over some good food. FHW is committed to Fun, Fitness and Friendship and welcomes everyone. Thank you, and see you on the trail. Bob Wolfe

Thank you to Joyce Conway for donating a club shirt and Melissa Mooney for donating a beautiful crocheted scarf to be included in the basket Freestate donated for the raffle at the April 25, 2015 walk at Montpelier Tea Festival. The basket was very much appreciated by the Friends of Montpelier Mansion. We’ve all heard that protecting skin from the sun will help prevent it from

aging. But you’re already older, is there any point to worrying about sun

damage? People in their 60’s plus may not be as concerned about young

looking skin, but studies have shown that older skin is less able to protect

itself. Men, you need to get in the habit of moisturizing your skin. Ladies,

hats are a desirable sun protection. Add a yearly inspection by a

dermatologist

We need to walk throughout the week –not just

weekends. Be sure to let someone know where

you are going and your itinerary. Carry water

with you. Try to walk with a buddy. Call the YRE

POC about the trail if it is more than an hour’s

drive away from home. Have fun and read the

historic signs and enjoy the zeitgeist of the

trail.

The American Volkssports Association is an association of clubs; and

walkers join local clubs to support locally. This was fine when there

would be a thousand walkers at an event paying their walking fees to

the National Organization. With the number of participants declining

the AVA needs additional funds to sustain and keep up with inflation.

The American Volkssports Association: pays costs associated with

efforts to administer one of the nation’s largest sports programs

from the national headquarters in Universal City, Texas. Essen-

tial services include all the overhead, awards, printing, supporting

internet technology, legal, audit and National Executive Council.

One of the major expenses is event insurance which covers all

Volkssport events conducted by chartered clubs. Frequently,

the club must have the site listed on the insurance certificate

where a club wants to put on a walk. Quite literally, without

this coverage there would be no Volkssport events!

It is NOT enough to just

PARTICIPATE !

SO THE POINT FOR US IS— Everyone needs to participate physically and

financially with either donations, or better

yet, becoming Associate Members of the

National AVA. http://www.ava.org/membership.php 10
