Dear French-American Digital Lab participants,

I’m very proud to welcome you to this initiative, a project that has been 18 months in the making from the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and Business France.

Perpetually at the cutting edge of media and culture, New York has recently become a booming tech hub with a special emphasis on the arts. It’s a distinct startup community that is proving to be immensely profitable, as both an incubator of creativity as well as a generator of capital. I felt that it was the right time to create the Digital Lab to reflect the infinite possibilities at our disposal when we unite these two realms.

With longstanding ties to New York’s premiere cultural institutions, the Cultural Services is uniquely positioned to give participants a foothold into the cultural startup network. The Digital Lab program is designed to support you, entrepreneurs in their international development, providing vital connections with major organizations as well as insights into the subtleties of the American market.

Over the next 10 days you will visit some of the most innovative leaders in both tech and the arts, including YouTube, Google, Hearst Corporation, Kickstarter, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. You will also meet with a talented team of industry professionals to coach you through everything from US market business strategies to cross cultural IP and investment legal advice. Sounds intense? You’ll enjoy some much-needed diversion at a performance of Sleep No More, the groundbreaking interpretation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

I would like to take the time to warmly thank our co-producer Business France, as well as all of our partners behind this dynamic program: l’Institut français, Créatis/Gaité lyrique, NUMA, Paris&Co, and the Made in NY Media Center by IFP, particularly Joana Vicente, Executive Director of IFP/ Made in NY Media Center by IFP, and Sabrina Dridje, Director of the Made in NY Media Center by IFP. I would equally like to thank Orange and Havas, as well as the City of Paris for their incredible commitment to the Digital Lab.

Last but not least, I would like to thank the amazing departments at the Embassy for their time and commitment, and I hope you’re as excited as I am for an unprecedented opportunity for French and American startup creators.

Best of luck! Thomas MichelonDeputy Cultural Conselor

About the Cultural Services of the French Embassy The Cultural Services of the French Embassy provides a platform for exchange and innovation between French and American artists, intellectuals, educators, students, the tech community, and the general public. Based in New York City, Washington D.C., and eight other cities

across the US, the Cultural Services develops the cultural economy by focusing on six principal fields of action: the arts, literature, cinema, the digital sphere, French language and higher education. www.frenchculture.org

About The French-American Digital LabThe French-American Digital Lab is a new interdisciplinary exchange program created by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York and co-produced with Business France within the framework of French Tech New York City. This program aims to stimulate creative and business partnerships between cultural innovators in France and the US. The first session takes place in New York and is open to French candidates. The second session will be in Paris and opened to American candidates.

Focusing on training, research, and product development, the French-American Digital Lab is a program for creative development in the cultural industry. Its objective is to help content creators and early stage startups adapt their products to French and American markets, discover the local startup ecosystems in the cultural sector, and develop relationships with cultural partners. It targets start- up companies in the cultural field and content creators that wish to explore the potential of their products in an international creative ecosystem.

The French-American Digital Lab’s intensive, ten-day program consists of meetings, seminars, and creative collaboration sessions for cultural startups and content creators. Seminars will examine the question of how to adapt a product to new cultural and economic contexts. During collaboration sessions, participants will take part in themed workshops examining the numerous challenges facing technological innovators from all backgrounds. These sessions will push participants to re-examine the core of their idea, and to re-envision that idea’s potential. Participants who complete the ten-day program will learn to look at their projects with fresh eyes.In addition to seminars and creative collaboration sessions, participants will benefit from individual mentorship. They will have the opportunity to work with their mentors over the course of numerous creative sessions with the goal of helping participants develop their connections to prominent cultural institutions such as museums, operas, television channels, film and music producers, publishing houses, and music labels.

LANCE WEILERWRITER + DIRECTOR +EXPERIENCE DESIGNER

JOSHUA SESSLERCDAS

Lance Weiler is a storyteller, entrepreneur and thought leader. An alum of the Sundance Screenwriters Lab, Lance is recognized as a pioneer because of the way he mixes storytelling and technology. WIRED magazine named him “One of twenty-five people helping to re-invent entertainment.” He has successfully self-distributed his films The Last Broadcast and Head Trauma to more than 20 countries while grossing over 5 million dollars in the process. The Last Broadcast, which he co-wrote and co-directed, became the first film to be distributed digitally to theaters in 1998.

Always interested in experimenting with new ways to tell stories and reach audiences, Lance developed a cinema ARG (augmented reality game) around his second feature Head Trauma. Over 2.5 million people experienced the game via theaters, mobile drive-ins, phones and online. In recognition of these cinematic gaming innovations, BUSINESSWEEK named Lance “One of the 18 Who Changed Hollywood.” Others on the list included Thomas Edison, George Lucas and Steve Jobs.

Lance is the Director of Experiential Learning and Applied Creativity at Columbia University. The appointment is part of a campus wide initiative entitled Learn Do Share an effort to R&D the future of learning and work by harnessing storytelling, game mechanics, design thinking and technology. In addition Lance is a founding member and director of the Digital Storytelling Lab @Columbia. The lab explores new forms and functions of storytelling.

Joshua Sessler‘s practice is at the intersection of digital media, entertainment and technology. He has over 14 years of experience advising entrepreneurs, investors, content owners and companies in the full range of corporate, intellectual property and internet technology legal matters. He represents a broad range of creative individuals and companies who are using new media and technology to create new business paradigms. These include innovators, social media companies, broadband television programmers and producers, app and software developers, financial software companies, website designers and developers, video game developers, mobile content providers, Internet retailers, crowd funding platform companies, digital advertising agencies and design firms as well as investors, performers, filmmakers, authors, journalists, bloggers, designers, print publishers, retail businesses and restaurants.

Mr. Sessler also has an in-depth corporate background and regularly handles matters such as business formation and structuring, angel/venture capital financing, intellectual property protection, licensing and distribution, social media and user-generated content issues, including online contests and promotions, technology platform agreements, hosting and cloud computing agreements, website terms of use, privacy policies and data protection issues, M&A, joint ventures, executive and employee compensation and stock option programs and a wide range of commercial transactions.
