Description: Studying a language before traveling helps to experience the people and culture of a country in a way that other travelers often miss. You begin your trip even before you leave. In this course you begin to learn a new language the same way you learned your native language—through hearing and repeating. The conversational style of instruction immerses you in your new language. The instructor will dedicate part of the class to give you firsthand information about the culture and customs you will encounter. There will also be time for you to ask questions about the culture, people, or places of interest.

Learning Objectives: Participants successfully completing this course will: 1. Learn to understand and respond to basic conversational phrases 2. Learn basic vocabulary 3. Learn the basics of French pronunciation 4. Be introduced to the basics of French grammar 5. Learn about travel in France: sites, museums, eating, transportation,

money, Paris lay-out, etc.

Course Outline: Week 1 • Introduction of students and teacher in English and French • Introduction to book and CD • Travel information – transportation and responses to students questions • Basic phrases with who and where

• Basic sounds and the alphabet

Week 2 • Greetings in French • Common nouns and numbers • Travel information—map of Paris, hotels, bathrooms • Food in France/French • Ordering in a restaurant

• French culture 1

Week 3 • Review • Travel information—Paris museums • Colors • Money • More greetings

• French culture 2

Week 4 • Review • Travel information—money, phone calls • Eating and foods • Some basic verbs • Forms of he, she, it, you, they

• Some useful nouns and discussion of gender of nouns

Week 5 • Review • Travel information—outside of Paris, regions • More verbs • Time • Singular and plural • Practice a basic conversation

Week 6 • Review • Travel questions? • Survival phrases (not in textbook) • Common phrases • French culture 4
