FOCUS ON THE FRENCH MARKET
Production
France is the 3rd fruit and veg producer (behind Italy and Spain) and the 4th potato producer in the EU. Fruit and veg (including potato) represent about €8 billion, or 11% of French agriculture (in value). This represents around 5,9 million tons of vegetables, 2,7 million of fruit and 6,3 million tons of potato. The last census, realised in 2010, counted 30 800 vegetable producers on 202 000 ha, 27 600 fruit producers on 160 000 ha and 19 850 potato producers on 165 000 ha. As regards vegetables (excluding potato), tomato is the most important production with 795 000 tons. Apple dominates by far the fruit production with 1,4 million tons.
Organic fruit & veg
Organic production has been increasing over the past few years, but remains relatively marginal. France counts 5 660 organic fruit farms on 14 900 ha, and 3 927 organic vegetables farms on 9 600 ha.

ACTIVITY
As leading SME export group in France, Saint-Charles Export aims to bring together the different players of the fruit and veg, transport and logistic sectors, in a single association, working for the development of products, services and know-how of the Plateforme Multimodale Pyrénées Méditerranée (MP²). All business areas are represented, from production to shipment, including international trading, transport, logistic and finance.
It is an efficient way for the group members to export more easily and at a lower cost. It also increases members’ competitiveness.
The 200 Saint-Charles Export member companies represent a marketing offer of 2,2 million tons from 1st January to 31st December, originating from three different French regions and from the import/export businesses attached to the platform.
Considered as the garden and orchard of France, the Languedoc-Roussillon French Region is a crossroad for the fruit and vegetable productions from southern countries (such as Spain, North Africa and southern hemisphere). Its strategic position allows a great diversity in terms of origins and varieties in fruit and vegetables.
25
The gathering on the same site of all transportation modes (rail, sea, ground and air) enables Saint-Charles Export operators to:
- Diversify their supply sources;
- Receive products from all origins;
- Redistribute all year round to every destination in Europe within a very short time frame;
- Limit carbone cost in fresh produce transportation for a better sustainable development.
This unique offer in Europe, made of products full of sunshine and of an exceptional quality in taste, is protected by Quality Assurance Policy acknowledged and certified by the French government. This guarantees food safety and batch traceability.
The member companies can thus ensure their customers regular freshness of produce, all year round, with cold chain integrity and control of the time factor.
