All illustrations of this leaflet have been made by the young artist Elīna Brasliņa. Elīna has studied French philology at the University of Latvia and fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Latvia. Elīna has illustrated more than ten books for children, including “Mākslas detektīvi” serie of Luīze Pastore. She was nominated for “Jānis Baltvilks” price and she also received two prices of “Zelta ābele” concourse in the category “book for children”. Elīna is currently working in animation.

ABOUT USThe French Institute in Latvia is the Republic of France’s official language and culture centre with 20 years of experience in teaching the French language to the most diverse target audiences. It is also the only examination centre in Latvia where one can attain internationally recognized diplomas confirming a knowledge of the French language (DFP, DELF-DALF).

OUR ACTIVITIES We offer general French language courses and activities for in-depth language learning in groups and individually and activities for children, adolescents and adults.Based on the common European framework of reference for languages, the courses are offered throughout the year using three learning paces: non-intensive, semi-intensive and intensive. Activities take place in the French language to help course participants get used to a French environment.

OUR TEACHERSWe have local teachers and teachers from France at the French Institute, who have specialized in teaching the French language as a foreign language. They regularly upgrade their knowledge and skills with trainings set up by the French institute and its Latvian network.

In these wine tasting evenings you will find out about the French world of wine with sommelier Jānis VOLKINŠTEINS. During the activities, you will get to taste specially selected wines as well as finding out more about how specific grapes from different regions end up in the bottle, how to enjoy wine, and which food goes with which wine and much more.First get-together – 5pm-7pm 10th September 2016.First topic – “The Diversity of French Wine: 5 wines, 5 regions, 5 different styles.”

The French Institute participates in a series of events called “A Taste of France” (“Goût de France”) every year in March to mark the presence of French gastronomy on five continents.The goal of these activities is for gourmands to taste and get to know the diversity of French gastronomy interactively, as well as to discover and consolidate their French language vocabulary connected with flavours.

We will commence a series of activities about cinema in the French language in September!During the activities we will look at, and discuss, fragments of films, montage, the movement of the camera and special effects. We will look “behind the scenes”, find out about various cinema genres, add to our vocabulary, and practice our speaking and listening skills. Activities are linked thematically to the free film sessions held by the French Institute’s Cinema Club!First topic – “Kino Kino” (“Cinéma dans le cinéma”)Cinema – series of activities – once a week on Fridays.Cinema Club sessions – twice a month on Wednesdays.

When travelling to one of the francophone countries, take along the minimum collection of necessary words and phrases with you in your baggage! The French Institute has developed a special training course which will allow you to take your first steps in the French language when planning your travel to one of the 30 countries where the French language is the state language.

In broadening our collaboration with TINTO Wine Restaurant, we offer the opportunity to be involved in an informal activity over brunch 1-2 times per month with a French teacher. This is an opportunity to spend Saturday morning involved in discussions in a French atmosphere, while enjoying a leisurely tasty meal.

FRENCH RENDEZ-VOUS SATURDAYS

In the first serie of activities, we will find out more about French companies (Renault, Michelin, l’Oréal, Danone, Yves Rocher etc.), which have made their names not just in France, but also in the world history book of civiliza-tion, culture and economics. During the activities we will be looking up close at the creation of the companies, the history of their development and the products they offer. Participation in the course will help you find out more about the French car which you may be driving, the hand cream which you might be using, or the yogurt which you might be eating. Practical assignments to broaden your vocabulary are also include in the activities to help you develop your understanding of written text and to practice conversation.

The series will continue: in the winter-spring and spring-summer sessionsTopics for coming series – French political personalities and great inventions.

PHONETICS AND PRONUNCIATIONThe aim of the course – to find out about the main problems associated with learning the phonetics of the French language, to repeat the pronunciation of vowels and consonants, to understand why the French language “is not written as it’s spoken”, to connect writing with the sounds, as well as practicing French language intonation and word association with phonemes.

CONVERSATIONAL FRENCHThe aim of the activity is to develop the ability to verbally communicate in the French language in everyday situations, to apply the grammar learned in general course activities in practice and to enrich vocabulary putting special emphasis on conversational French. Proposed activities: role-playing situations, discussions and an exchange of ideas about various topics selected each week

IMPROVING GRAMMAR The aim of the course is to repeat the basic structures of grammar in the French language, which were acquired at the general French language course activities at the A1 / A2 knowledge level, as well as applying this knowledge in practice.

FRENCH BUSINESS LANGUAGEThe course has been developed using role play in which participants learn about the everyday work of businesses in practice, understanding the main areas of work activities in a logical fashion. Practical exercises for expanding one’s vocabulary, developing an understanding of written text, and for practicing writing and conversation will be included in the activities.

FRENCH MEDIAThe aim of the interactive activities is to introduce the broad range of contemporary French media in its most diverse forms, with special attention focussed on communication and journalism. We will be reading, listening and discussing as part of the activities.

PREPARING FOR THE DELF B2 EXAMThe aim of the course – to prepare for the DELF B2 level exam, working with standard exercises.All language skills are included in the activities: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

EVERYONE ON STAGE! (7–10 YEARS) The French Institute is opening a theatre workshop for children with prior knowledge of the French language. We will be learning the basics of the art of acting, working with texts, singing and practicing the French language, as well as acting and preparing for a per-formance at the French Institute’s Christmas event.The activities will be hosted by actor and promising director Ance Kukule.

We are commencing weekend activities at the Latvian National Museum of Art in the French language!Under the guidance of teachers from the French Institute, the children will discover the National Museum of Fine Arts. During the activities the children will find out in French about paintings and what is portrayed in them: schools of art, colours, subjects, geographic forms, the family, professions etc.At the conclusion of the activities, there will be the opportunity for children to create their own works on the particular topic shown in the activity.

ACTIVITIES FOR BUSINESSES

The French Institute develops individual training programmes which are tailored to the sphere of activities of a business and the needs of employees at various levels: general French language, French business language and French language activities for achieving a specific goal. Prior to commencing training, we undertake detailed training goals analysis and determine the level of knowledge of the French language for training participants. Activities can be organized in groups or individually, and can take place at the French Institute or on site at the business.Using communicative methods that include role playing, simulations and work with audio and video, we make sure you reach the best and enjoyable way your training goals.The activities that we provide will allow your employees to:

•participate in discussions where the French language is the working language (meetings, telephone calls, concluding deals etc.);

•learn and use the required vocabulary (jurisprudence, diplomacy, customer service, banks, the cultural sector, tourism, beautician, health, education etc.) in your area of activity;

•improve your level of knowledge of the French language, developing all of the skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

GENERAL FRENCH LANGUAGE FRENCH BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL LANGUAGE

DELF (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française) and DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) are the diplomas recognized by the French Ministry of Education, which allow for the evaluation of knowledge of the French language at the A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.The following skills are evaluated for each level: writing, reading, listening and speaking.DELF Pro evaluates knowledge in French business language (levels available: A1, A2, B1 and B2).DELF Junior is a version of the exam which is meant for students in later classes in particular. The attained diploma has the same value as an equivalent level exam diploma meant for adults (levels available: A1, A2, B1 and B2).Commencing in autumn 2015, the B1 and B2 level exam can replace the centralized high school exam in the French language. DELF Prim is meant for 8-12 year old children who are learning the French language as a foreign language. The exams have been developed on the basis of those designed for adults, but with the exam topics adapted to the specific age group. The diploma bestowed is equivalent to the corresponding level exam diploma for adults (levels available: A1.1, A1, A2).

DFP (Diplôme de français profesionnel) is an internationally officially recognized diploma bestowed by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris (CCI Paris Ile-de-France), which is suited to the requirements of the professional environ-ment and which permits the evaluation of knowledge of the French language at A2, B1, B2 and C1 levels in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.French business and professional language exams evaluate the ability to apply knowledge of the French language in a practical way in writing and orally in situ-ations that are encountered in a real professional environment.

Cinema Club We invite cinema lovers to free cinema sessions every second Wednesday. You’ll find both cinema classics, as well as the latest French films in the programme. The cinema club has been organized in connection with a series of cinema activities (see pg. 9).

Get-togethers à la Française On the fourth Thursday of every month, “Get-togethers à la française” will brings together French speakers and those who are still learning the French language to share in the joys of language, playing games and meeting in a friendly atmosphere with the evening’s guest. Beginners and French language experts – everyone is welcome!

Science Café The Science Café is a popular science get-together held once a month, providing an entertaining and educational talk on current topics about science, with the aim of stimulating discussion.

Wednesday Story Afternoons Once a month on a Wednesday, the mediateque invites young children to its story afternoon. Children who are mediateque subscribers aged from 4 to 8 years are invited to the monthly get-togethers. A 45-minute-long captivating story will be read out, followed by creative activities in the French language.

Student Evenings Come and meet and get to know the French Institute’s students and teachers at our social evenings! The evenings are planned for October and December in 2016, and in February and May in 2017! The dates will be announced later!

Continue learning the French language at the French Institute, recommend us to your friends and receive individual activities worth EUR 33 for free!+ 1 friend = 1 activity + 2 friends = 2 activities, etc.

The offer becomes valid when payment has been made for activities in a group. The free individual activities can be utilized during the specific session.
