FRESH APPROACH Making healthy food more accessible in the Bay Area

CalFresh Partnerships Program Presentation December 13, 2016

Renna Khuner-Haber, Program Manager

We envision healthy communities where all people have access to fresh, healthy food from California farmers.

OUR VISION

We aim to create long-term change in local food systems by connecting California communities with healthy food from California farmers and expanding knowledge about food and nutrition.

OUR MISSION

Fresh Approach Programs

Nutrition Education • Healthy Food, Healthy You • VeggieRx Food Access • Freshest Cargo mobile farmers’ market

truck Food Equity • Bay Area wide promotion of WIC, CalFresh,

and Market Match incentives at farmers’ markets

All PCFMA and most other Bay Area farmers’ markets accept CalFresh EBT

Market Match is an incentive for CalFresh EBT customers to stretch their food dollars when shopping at farmers’ markets

Fresh Approach works closely with the Pacific Coast Farmers Market Association (PCFMA) to promote CalFresh EBT and Market Match at markets

CALFRESH & MARKET MATCH

Market Match DOUBLES the value of CalFresh dollars

Spend $5 of CalFresh Receive $5 Market Match

Spend $10 of CalFresh

Receive $10 of Market Match

Spend $15 of CalFresh

Receive $10 of Market Match

Using CalFresh at the farmers’ market: It’s as easy as 1-2-3!

Swipe your CalFresh EBT card at the information booth

• Info booth has a handheld card reader

• Indicate how many dollars to withdraw from EBT balance

• Swipe card, enter PIN number

• Will get a printed receipt

Receive CalFresh and Market Match voucher/tokens

• Usually in denominations of $1

• Vouchers look different for CalFresh vs. Market Match

• Unused vouchers can be saved for future use

Shop at the market to buy fresh and affordable food

• Vouchers/tokens can be used just like cash with farmers at the market

• Can use CalFresh vouchers to buy the same types of food items at the farmers’ market as you would using EBT at the grocery store

• Market Match: can ONLY be used to purchase fruits and vegetables

• Meat

• Bread

• Hummus, dips, etc

• Plant starts

What can I buy?

• Fruits

• Can’t use EBT directly with farmer – need to get vouchers

• Vouchers/tokens are specific to market operator

• Can get max amount of Market Match once per market per day

• Can withdraw as much CalFresh benefits as available on balance; limit only applies to Market Match

• Can return unused vouchers at info booth and have money value added back to card
