fresh talkWelcome to the second issue of fresh and we hope that you enjoyed the

first one as much as we did.

Spring has been prolific with weddings as usual and the increased use of wire inarrangements has added a new dimension for brides. It has also contributed tothe versatility of the table arrangements featured throughout the Racing Carnivalin Victoria. The Caulfield track was a superb venue for the Victorian leg of theDesignz Cup which was just one of many things to enjoy at the ABC GardeningShow in early October. The event was beautifully timed to precede Guineas Dayand the Caulfield Cup so we hope that next year we can attract more entrants.A special thanks to Marjorie Milner College for encouraging their students toenter.

The contrast couldn’t have been greater in Western Australia where we had arecord number of entrants in the Designz Cup. The Royal Agricultural Society ofWestern Australia has a long history of floriculture with the Perth Royal Showrunning several concurrent competitions and the Society commented on thestrong impact made by designs in the Centenary Building this year.

Thanks again to all Floristrycoordinators in the training facilitiesof Perth who made this leg of theDesignz Cup such a success. Aspecial big thanks to Carole Kurth ofFremantle for her choreography of theevent and to Alan Randell-Smith forjudging all states. See page 9 for theoverall winner of the National trophyplus the cheque for $1,000.00 andnext year we hope to develop thisprize even further.

We’re pleased to report that NeilWhittaker has gained a fourthplacing in the Europa Cup ofFloristry held in Slovenia. Photos ofhis delightful interpretation of thechildren’s book character of PippiLongstocking may be seen onpage 8. You’ll note that he capturedher ratbag tendencies very well!!As promised in our last editorial wehave included a report on MarkPampling’s trip to the Philippines

and his Davao workshops. The constantly evolving range of OASIS® products isproviding designers like Mark with plenty of scope for magic on stage.

We hope you find the arrangements in fresh inspirational and perhaps these, along with the thousands of other designs that leave the hands of florists' everyweek, will prove refreshing for the many Australians in the grip of drought againthis year.

Have a great Christmas from the Smithers-Oasis Company teams in India,

Malaysia and Australia.

Whilst teaching at Reaseheath CollegeMark met Lynne Miller and they forged acreative partnership. This became TheBlack Rose which is now a highlyacclaimed florist in Knutsford, Cheshire.Seven years later they've found a nichemarket with their business and their verysuccessful flower school named TheCheshire School of Flowers. The BlackRose has a strong corporate image andthe shop's interior is slick and modern.

“My design style is very much clean cut, simple minimalist and the best way toshow this off is with a plain backgroundand good lighting,” said Mark. “Crispwhite walls, wooden flooring andsandstone pillars to hold glass vasesfilled with fabulous flowers.” Black, silverand white are the corporate colourswhile The Black Rose is printed on hisribbon so customers quickly identifyflowers from this business. Mark's bestsellers are modern, both arrangementsand hand tieds, with good quality vasesand containers also selling well.

“OASIS® Floral Products are alwaysused in the shop," Mark explains, "Wewant to be known for quality and theseproducts always give us this. I prefer touse OASIS® Premium Floral Foam, itnever lets me down plus we use lots ofOASIS® RAINBOW® Foam, which givesus an edge over our competitorsallowing us to create somethingdifferent." He always uses the OASIS®

WEDDING BELLE® Bouquet Holder forbridal bouquets preferring wet floralfoam so he can make the bouquet theday before, confident that it will lookperfect on the wedding day.

Calla Lilies became fashionable forweddings several years ago and Markcreated a stylish, clean-cut bouquetusing only Callas and bold foliage. The7cm holder works perfectly and thisbouquet has become his signaturepiece. Recognised for modern style it'sno wonder there's a long queue to TheBlack Rose as it goes from strength tostrength.

Before becoming an award winning florist Mark Entwistle was a hairdresser with his ownsalon. Thank goodness he became disillusioned with hairdressing and enrolled in Floristryat Reaseheath College because the world of floristry would be poorer without him. Mark'sstunning style of floristry has won numerous awards including a Gold medal and best inshow at RHS Tatton Flower Show with a sensational black and white exhibit.

STEP 2. Join the two ‘U’ shaped foam bases together back-to-back with wood picks to form athicker ‘U’ shape. Attach the round cut-out foam to a dish by using pin holders and place the ‘U’shape on top so that it sits vertically upright. Secure its position on top with a wood pick.

STEP 3. Wrap and pin foliage to cover the round cut-out foam base. Cover the ‘U’ shaped foam withOrchids, Roses and Leaves to create texture. Add Salix around the ‘U’ shape to give dimension andmovement to the arrangement.

STEP 1. Saturate OASIS® Floral Foam Ring 30cm in Floralife® Fresh Flower Food solution. Draw acircle in the centre of the ring then cut around it removing the circle and leaving a ring that is cut in 2places to form two ‘U’ shaped foam bases of equal size. The round cut-out foam from the centre willbecome the base to support the ‘U’ shapes.

A year of study in Japan under the tutelage ofthe highly rated Mrs Tezuka Yuko has influencedher work greatly and enabled experience in bigweddings and large exhibitions. Eunice regularly

The Cup was held in the largest shoppingmall in Davao so there was enough roomfor the big audience who attended Mark’sdemonstration on the day before the Cup.Rainbow™Foam along with OASIS®

accessories like Garlands with Net meltedinto many stunning arrangements underMark’s expert guidance and later in the day58 participants were absorbed by hisworkshop.

“They were all eager to try out new skillsand make something creative andimpressive,” said Mark. “Students reallyappreciated having the opportunity to workcreatively with local flowers and Smithers-

Oasis products while their enthusiasmmade it easy for me to teach and share myskills.”

Finally it was time to judge the Waling Cupwhich included a separate professional andstudent group all working to the theme,Colours of Davao. “Some of thecompetitors work in really low paid, repetitive jobs, but they manage to sustaintheir creativity and passion for flowers, andmake the effort to enter the competition,”said Mark. “Florists in the Philippines don'thave a lot of access to floral designeducation, but they have a huge love offlowers and an infectious enthusiasm.”

They were encouraged to capture thetextures of the Southern Philippines in theirdesigns plus anticipate the forthcomingHalloween festival. It was hoped they mightutilize the giant pumpkins raised on localfarms to make their designs even moreenchanting and clearly they did from thephoto on this page! Judging was difficult atthis Smithers-Oasis sponsored event and itwas well covered by local newspapers.

Mark Pampling was very well received byhis audiences and has already been invitedback next year so we thank him profuselyfor dazzling Davao with designs like theones shown above.

All roads in the Philippines led to Davao during August and Mark Pampling was on one of them. He had a tight schedule that included the 4th Waling Cup Competition - a national event that aims to enhance demand forfresh flowers and to support local growers. It also showcases the very best in floral design.

Our own multi talented Britishcompetitor and OASIS® AmbassadorNeil Whittaker took Slovenia bystorm and won the first task easily. Each competitor had to make anarrangement reflecting some of thecharacteristics of PippiLongstocking, a fairy tale characterfrom the books by Astrid Lindgren.Neil’s design captured Pippi’s longstockings perfectly using a riot ofzinging colour to produce a modernfolk story look.

The bridal bouquet section caused a stir and produced cutting edgedesigns using only Carnations withadded foliage or accessories. A great way to welcome back aflower that has been out of fashionfor several years and show thestunning impact Carnations canhave. Neil’s innovative bouquet wasperfectly executed from Carnationswith the calyx removed giving a fluffy textured look with shimmeringOASIS® Diamond Pins and asprinkling of gold dust for a glamorous effect.

A planted design for an outdoor children’s playground proved to be a wet affair when thecompetitors braved the elements to produce designs with materials selected by theorganisers. The famous Slovenia architect Jos̈e Plec̈nik was the theme for the fourth taskand Neil made a swirling design depicting architecture of the period.

By the time the finale had arrived a small but noisy group of British supporters were tryingto keep calm for the last two tasks, a hand tied bouquet and the surprise item decoratinga black fridge freezer supplied by Gorenje, who together with OASIS® Floral Products werethe main sponsors.

How close can a competition be when only four points separate the first and fourthplaces? Germany came first with 464.6, second Austria with 463.8, third Switzerland with460.8 and fourth our own Neil Whittaker with 460.2.

Many congratulations to Neil and his partner Anthony for the highest result that Britain hasever achieved in a Europa Cup competition. It was stupendous and you can only imaginehow much champagne was flowing after the event!

For inspirational and high octane floristry Slovenia was the place to be at the end ofSeptember when the Europa Cup of Floristry took place. Twenty countries competedmaking six designs each, to very tight schedules, and the result was electrifying.

Designz Cup Results

Western Australia went wild over an opportunity to participate in the Designz Cup andthere were 15 entrants. Organisation for this event was superb and the Royal AgriculturalSociety of Western Australia has always run highly rated competitions so the choice ofevent is difficult for students but fortunately the Cup was a popular choice.

Judging was very tight. “Due to the high standard of all entrants the final scores were veryclose," said Alan Randell-Smith after the event and we are especially thankful to CaroleKurth for her excellent choreography from beginning to end. We also congratulate thefollowing placegetters:

1st Prize - Stacey Lee Pitman, Challenger TAFE2nd Prize - Shae New, Challenger TAFE3rd Prize - Cassandra Zervos, Flower Design School

The finished product Stacey Lee Pitman creates her version of Grease

Lauren is from Tea Tree Gully campus, TAFESA and was speechless when we phoned herwith the news of her win so we hope that sheis now recovering with her cheque and trophy.

Even though there can be only one overallwinner it must be said that the final result waseven closer than usual which indicates howhigh the standard has been this year. To

compete takes considerable effort since the theme needs to beresearched, appropriate props selected and all conditions of entrysatisfied. On top of this competitors' need a large dollop ofcreativity which means they must all be congratulated for the breathtaking results that made Alan Randell-Smith’s role as judge a pleasure.

Victorian entrants may have been low in numbers but theirdesigns were high in quality and the venue at CaulfieldRacetrack was superb. However the ABC Gardening Showcollided with a term break making it more difficult for TAFEColleges to fully engage with the requirements of the competitonso we are now looking forward to better timing in 2008.

Meanwhile we’d like to thank all participants from MarjorieMilner College and results were as follows:

Hearts, cupids and red roses remind us that another Valentine’s Day is just around the corner.Arrows poisoned with love strike unsuspecting victims as the Day draws closer while florists orderin extra supplies of their biggest sellers for one of the busiest days in the calendar. Flowers arearranged to soften the coldest of hearts and these designs demonstrate the melt-factor in action:
