ISSUE 64 - 17 MAY 2021
At last. Today’s the day we are finally welcomed back inside to drink our favourite beers and no longer have to worry about the weather. This time around the hospitality sector has had plenty of time to prepare, so let’s hope it all goes well. Cheers to everyone - it’s been a long wait.
Despite the Covid situation we’re still looking forward to the start of our Grand Beer Tours, but have now put them back to begin later in the year. Hopefully by then travel abroad will be easier. Once our destinations are officially on the ‘green list’ we’re full speed ahead. Check out the promotional page in this Newsletter for more details.

BREWERS CORNERGreat news this week, as indoor hospitality is now allowed to reopen. However, one thing that’s now accepted by health professionals, pretty much beyond doubt, is that COVID spreads most readily via air-borne particles.
https://www.imperial.ac.uk/news/213573/coronavi-rus-more-likely-spread-inside-through/
If you’re not yet vaccinated and deemed vulnerable, you might want to think twice about rushing to spend time with strangers in unventilated indoor spaces.
Writing decent beer tasting notes, if only for your own benefit, is something that we guess many TWICB readers care about. Anthony Gladman has some good advice here:
https://anthonygladman.com/get-better-at-describing-beer/
One of the definite wins for customers coming out of COVID is the ability to order via Apps, whether for table-service or rap-id pick-up at the bar. The app described in the article below is specific to the USA, but it gives a great idea of the direction of travel behind the technology, and we expect to see lots more innovation if this area in the UK soon:
https://brewpublic.com/beer-news/kuto-app-a-new-way-to-pay-at-breweries-bars-restaurants/
Finally, here is a fascinating article looking at some US breweries that have deployed some really funky shipping-container bars, custom-built by a Company called BoxPop.
https://beerandbrewing.com/boxpop-brewpub-containers-a-party-in-a-box/
The sticker-prices are somewhat eye-watering, but we imagine that this could trigger some ideas both for UK Breweries who might want to go for a DIY version, as well as to perhaps inspire someone to launch a UK Company supplying container bars?

EPISODE 45 - VAUX BREWERY
VAUX has been a beloved name in Sunderland for almost 200 years. From the earliest incarnation of ‘C. Vaux & Sons’ in 1837 the brewery was an important part of city life in Sunderland until its sudden closure in 1999.
In early 2019, Steve and his business partner Michael set about relaunching this iconic brand to make it a source of pride once more for the people of Sunderland.

taproom reviewStaggeringly Good Brewery, Unit 10 St George’s Ind Est, Rodney Road, Southsea, PO4 8SS
Staggeringly Good Brewery is based in a large industrial unit, less than 100 yards from Fratton Park, home of Portsmouth FC. They have so many cool plans, it is hard to know how to do this Taproom Review, in a way that will allow it to remain current for any significant period of time.
As I write this on 14th May, the Taproom is open for outdoor seating only, and can accommodate around 50 people. Tables need to be booked in advance. They have a very handy covered area than runs down the side of the building, where most of the tables can be moved in bad weather, to still allow a decent outdoor experience.
The current outside seating is table service, and provides a decent range of draft and canned SG beer, as well as a couple of slushie machines, perfect for the SG Wrecker Series.
Parked at the front of the brewery there is a pizza truck, which is fired up every weekend. Beverage options are planned to increase following the opening of a cocktail and barista bar in the near future.
Now, is where things get a bit less clearly defined...
The guys are working hard to finish an indoor seating area, within the shadow of the brewing equipment. This decent space should seat perhaps 40 people.
More exciting still, is the work going on the vast mezzanine level, which will ultimately become an events space with a large dedicated bar, but also a games area, a merch shop, coffee bar and music stage. Current plans are to have this open in mid-summer, perhaps as early as July.
The final phase of development will see the south-facing (and Fratton Park facing) rear of the brewery de-veloped with a further bar, and raised beer terrace, which will be a great sun trap, overlooking the football ground, to soak up the sounds (if not the sights) of match-days.
Next time you are on the South Coast, make sure you schedule a trip to this great facility.

PATREON ANNOUNCEMENT Discover the benefits of membership
When we launched This Week in Craft Beer in January 2020, we were blissfully
unaware of what lay ahead of us! Considering the obstacles, we have all faced, we
are proud of what we managed to accomplish in our first year.
However, we have lots more that we want to do in 2021! In order to fund these
activities and to enable our Community to get more involved with the creative process at TWICB, we have launched a Patreon Membership Programme.
Full details of how you can get involved starting at less than the cost of a half-decent can of beer per
month, can be found at patreon.com/thisweekincraftbeer.
Don't worry, our weekly Newsletter and Podcast will continue to be FREE FOR EVERYONE! The Patreon
Membership offers access to range of brand new TWICB Products and Services. Please check it out and
let us know what you think?!
www.thisweekincraft.beer/patreon
Q. Why are you starting to charge for things that we have enjoyed for free all this year? A. We aren't! The weekly Newsletter and weekly Brewer-interview Podcast will continue to be free to everyone. Patreon will
enable us to offer brand-new additional products and services to Members.
Q. What's this about Members getting involved with TWICB? A. We have been amazed and delighted with the amount of engagement and feedback we have received during our first year, via
social media, email etc. The UK Craft Beer Community is clearly engaged, knowledgeable and sociable! We want to provide a mechanism for bringing the community into our creative process, allowing people to participate in the planning, research,
production and delivery of our products.
Q. Why do you have to charge for things? A. TWICB is run by just two people: Rob and Steve. Whilst it is undoubtedly a labour of love, it has developed into something that
consumes a significant part of our working weeks. Steve works mainly on the Newsletter, where the New Beers Section alone
takes many hours per week, to research, collate and format. Rob works mainly on the podcast, where each episode takes several
hours to schedule, research, record, edit and promote. Whilst we will continue to invest this time to produce the free products, we think Patreon could be a great way of funding the time and effort that we want to devote to developing new products and
services.
Q. Apart from your time, what specifically will the Patreon proceeds be used to fund?A. As soon as the COVID-19 situation permits, we want to take the podcast on the road, to record Brewer interviews at their own
Taprooms, as well as record live segments at Festivals, Tap-Takeovers and other beery events of note. In order to provide a quality
finished audio product, we will need to invest in some decent mobile recording equipment, not to mention the cost of travelling
the length and breadth of Britain in the pursuit of great interviews!
Q. What is the thought process behind the bundles of Patreon Membership bonuses that you are offering?A. We have tried to come up with bundles that combine some community benefits, exclusive digital products, exclusive physical
products, invites to exclusive TWICB events, discounts on TWICB Grand Tours and opportunities to participate in the TWICB
creative process. We have tried to price each Membership Level so that each offers outstanding value for money. We have also
tried to be mindful of the number of Patreon members that we can realistically include in each bonus activity. (Clearly the invite to
participate in the podcast interview or attend the TWICB "Board Meeting" needs to be strictly limited in numbers, or else the bonus
would cease to be "exclusive” and would risk disrupting the actual process itself.)
Q. Are the Membership Benefits and Levels set in stone? A. Of course not! We are literally making this up as we go along currently! We would love to get your feedback on the Levels, the
Benefits, and indeed the very idea of using Patreon in the first place! Please hit us up on IG (@thisweekincraft.beer) or via email [email protected]. We confidently expect to need to adjust the Patreon model as we go along, based on feedback.
Q. Is this like a Gym membership, where I sign up in January, and then regret it for the rest of the year?!
A. Definitely Not! Membership is month-to-month and you can cancel your membership at any time. Only caveat here is that
certain Member Benefits (mainly those ones that involve a significant cost for us to provide to you) are only unlocked after three
or six months at a certain tier.
