Crop Update

Apples & Pears

Avocados

Asparagus

Bell Peppers

Berries

Broccoli

Cauliflower

Washington is in the midst of its new crop season, with more and more apples becoming available in the upcoming weeks. Fujis are gapping for the next week or so. Bartlett, D’Anjou, Red, and Bosc pears have started in low volume

New crop from Baja has started and volume has increased. Markets continue to come off. Overall quality is excellent.

California is at the tail end of their season. The MX “Flora Loca” is starting to get better yields on larger sized fruit, but this crop is beginning to wind down as we approach the next crop. Overall quality is good. Markets are coming off.

Green bell supplies are plentiful with fields in Oxnard and Stockton/Hollister. Red and Yellow bells continue out of Hollister and fields beginning in Oxnard. Markets are beginning to come off on Reds/Yellows while Greens are steady. Quality is great.

The recent heat in the Salinas Valley the last few weeks has damaged the broccoli fields, in particular, the broccoli florets. Broccoli fields are aggressively exhibiting moderate percentages of brown beads, yellowing, hollow core and pin rot that will drive defect percentages above the norm for the next couple of weeks. These quality issues from the heat have drastically reduced yields with all Salinas Valley row crop suppliers.

Cauliflower supplies are tightening a bit as fields continue to gap. The quality is good with minor bruising and yellow cast with weights in the 25 to 28-pound level. Look for the market to continue to adjust going into next week.

Blackberries Supplies continue to increase , as Mexican production starts to ramp up. Quality is also improving, as we are seeing fewer red cell berries being shipped.

Raspberries Quality overall has been good. California is still a major player in production, with Mexico starting to contribute more and more fruit. Look for quality to remain good and supplies to increase over the next few weeks.

Strawberries Supplies continue to be short as demand increases. Santa Maria has started production, but not enough to offset demands from the dwindling Salinas crop. Look for markets to remain firm for the next week or two, until Santa Maria hits full stride.

Blueberries The Pacific Northwest crop has all but come to an end, and the pipeline is filling up with import fruit from Mexico, Argentina, and Peru. Look for quality to improve as we shift into imported product.

FRESH FACTSYour Weekly Market Update!

This market remains steady overall. School demand has been moderate at best. Many shippers have both small and large sizing and some are flexing on volume type orders. Demand looks to be moderate at best for the entire week. Santa Maria and Salinas continue to be the main growing regions for this commodity. The quality continues to be good. Minor defects reported include bowing, mechanical and slight insect damage. These defects are minimal.

Leaf Lettuce & Iceberg100% Salinas Product

Potatoes

Tomatoes

There are some minor defects being found, that are typically associated with new crop potatoes. Some wet spots, and light molding have been reported in some crops, but overall good quality is being shipped. The market continues to be firm on 60ct and larger, but should ease up as we move along into the season. Stockton is finishing up production, and Idaho and Washington are in full swing. Quality and supplies are good out of all growing regions.

California gas green season is in full production. Quality is very good and supplies should continue through October. New fields began on Rounds and Romas from Baja causing markets to even out with steady production. Quality is good. Cherry and Grape supplies are slightly better with new crop in Baja. Markets are steady. Quality is good.

Iceberg Lettuce: This market has gained strength with some suppliers while others have remained firm. Greater demand and lighter availability are expected by the end of next week with multiple shippers. For this week, supplies look to be ample to fill all orders. The weather continues to be good in the growing regions both north and south. Santa Maria and Salinas will continue to be the main growing regions, for this commodity. Growers continue to report overall good quality. Misshapen heads, insects and mechanical have been reported but only minimally.

Leaf Lettuce: Romaine is steady with most shippers. The quality continues to be reported above average. Tip burn, mechanical and insect damage is seen upon arrival, but minimally. Romaine hearts are expected to have good availability for the entire week. Red and green leaf, as well as butter, are all items expected to have ample supplies for the entire week. The quality overall is good.

OnionsIdaho has good quality and supplies across all colors and sizes.

CitrusLemons: We are continuing to see high demand on domestic supplies. Domestic supplies on 140’s and larger continue to be tight. With the import supplies starting to wind down, we will continue to see tight supplies until the Desert District #3 starts. In late September. Quality has been excellent.

Oranges: Demand for small Valencia’s continues to be very strong and the markets are rising weekly. Schools are playing a heavy role. Supplies will continues to be tight for 6-7 weeks until California Navels start. Suppliers are doing their best to keep up with the high demand. Quality is being reported as fair to good.
