We asked her to share the top 5 tips that helped get Marissa down 83 lbs in 12 weeks!

1. Food is fuel. Eat what you need to feel healthy, energized, and strong. It’s easier to eliminate “junk” food when you recognize how it makes you feel. Become conscious of how healthy foods make you feel compared to “junk.”

2. Start liking how you look - regardless of if you want to lose 83 lbs. When you like yourself, you’ll be more apt to stick to a workout or healthy eating plan. If you dislike your flabby arms or jiggly thighs, why would you want to consistently do good things for those body parts? Start liking how you look by placing sticky notes around your house that say, “I like my flat stomach” or “I like my toned legs.” Retrain your brain to like how you look, and start acting like you already have the body you want.

3. Write down a list of reasons why you value your body. Your stomach digests your food, your legs allow you to walk, etc. Visually seeing these reasons written down on paper will help you to appreciate your body more, and want to eat healthy & work out consistently.

4. Notice how you talk to yourself: do you pump yourself up, or put yourself down? Would your best friend say these things to you? Practice being your own best friend and enhancing your relationship with yourself.

5. Create your own mantra. Focus on what you want your body and life to look like. Then, write it down as if it was happening right now, and say this to yourself two times per day. Program your brain and your body to believe and act like you have already met your goals!

Fidget More In addition to your exercise plan, burn up calories all day long by staying antsy. Research shows that folks who fidget are less likely to be overweight, and for good reason. Moving as much as possible during your daily routine helps you burn calories around the clock, without having to disrupt your day.

Fill-Up On Fiber Fiber-filled foods help keep things moving smoothly through your intestines (which will effect your scale weight) and often fill you up on fewer calories. Fresh veggies and fruits like pears (did you know they contain more fiber than prunes?) are a great way to stay full while slimming down.

Drink More Water, that is! A recent study found that water is more effective for weight loss than diet pills and supplements. Simply drinking a 16-ounce glass of water before each meal can help you lose 5 pounds or more, without changing anything else.

There is no need to start that drastic juice fast or extreme exercise plan to gear up for summer. Start taking these simple steps every day and you’ll be ready for the beach in no time!

Lucky Jennifer entered our 365 Contest so she could shed some of the extra pounds her mother has been trying to get her to lose. “My Mom is a severe diabetic who has had many medical setbacks due to the disease and she doesn’t want me or my brother to follow

Her Mother’s worries have not been unfounded. With a demanding private practice to run, working as an instructor in a massage school and caring for her mother, Jennifer has not been able to lose successfully. In fact, since taking on the responsibility of her mothers care, she has gained weight and is more at risk than ever.
