This market is steady. Demand is moderate at best. All sizing is available. A few shippers were flexing at the beginning of the week for large volume type orders while others held firm to pricing. Oxnard/Santa Maria continue to be the main growing region for this commodity. Mexico will continue to have production on all sizes. Shippers will transfer from Southern California to Yuma for a fee if desired. Yuma is expected to begin harvesting in a few weeks. The quality continues to be reported above average. Weights are 52-57 pounds. Slight bowing and leafy tops are being reported, but minimally.

APPLES AND PEARS

AVOCADOS

ASPARAGUS

BELL PEPPERS

CELERY

BERRIES

BROCCOLI

CAULIFLOWER

Apples are doing good out of Washington, with all sizes and varieties available. Bartlett pears supplies are drying up, but Bosc and D’Anjou pears are plentiful.

Production from Northern Baja/mainland had dropped due to colder weather. Peru continues with steady volume and product is arriving on the West Coast to help with the limited production by MX. Demand begins to pick up causing markets to rise rapidly. Overall quality is good.

MX crop is currently seeing no rain, but production is stronger on small fruit compared to large. Overall quality is good. Markets are steady.

Green bell supplies have finished out of the desert with steady supplies from MX crossing through Nogales. Red and Yellow bells have started in a limited way out of mainland MX and continue from Coachella. Overall markets are higher on reds/yellows, but are steady on greens.

The Broccoli market continues to stay steady as supplies have picked up in Yuma. Quality has slightly improved with minimal purpling, some mechanical damage, and occasional yellow cast. Look for Broccoli to continue to adjust going into next week.

The cauliflower market continues to stay steady as supplies continue to come on in Yuma. The quality is good with slight bruising and yellow cast, with weights in the 25 to 28-pound level. Look for the market to continue to adjust going into next week.

Blackberries Supplies are plentiful coming out of Mexico and California. Quality is decent, with some red cell being spotted in most of the offerings.

Raspberries Supplies are bountiful out of Mexico. Overall quality is good, with some darker fruit being spotted in cases shipped.

Strawberries Supplies are still short out of the West Coast due to heavy rains in California and Mexico. Berry quality is decent at best, with bruising, heavy white shoulder, and bleeding berries present in most of the cases shipped. With more rain expected, look for markets to remain elevated and weather defects to remain constant.

Blueberries Supplies are abundant, and quality is excellent out of Mexico and Peru.

POTATOES

TOMATOES

40-70ct russets remain extremely limited, and the markets continue to inch up. Supplies are peaking on 80ct and smaller. Quality is decent, with some bruising and peepers present. Colored potatoes are steady out of Idaho, Washington, and California.

Demand exceeds supply - Tomatoes out of Mexico are extremely short due to a couple of factors. Recent rain and storm damage to fields has caused yield issues and delays of the early fruit. The new agreement on Mexican tomato imports have created heightened inspections at the US/Mexico border and a federal order issued by the USDA that all commercial tomato and pepper shipments must be inspected for the “Tomato brown rugose fruit virus”. Many shippers are having loads of tomatoes turned back to Mexico for issues and defects found. Florida does not have the volume to supply both the East and the West and prices are skyrocketing. Currently Rounds and Romas are extremely limited and pricing looks to remain escalated through January. Cherry and Grape supplies have also tightened up due to rain. Markets very active and higher with quality being fair.

Iceberg Lettuce: Good supplies with this commodity are expected for the rest of the week in Yuma. Santa Maria will have moderate availability. The quality continues to be above average with weights on liner being reported at 40-44 pounds from multiple suppliers. Some slight defects being reported to include minor growth crack, misshapen heads and mechanical. There are reports of ice in the Yuma as the weather is changing. For now, quality is still strong.

Leaf Lettuce: The romaine market is flat overall. Shippers are flexing and looking to move some volume. The quality has been good with weights averaging 32-37 pounds, and 11-13 inches in length from multiple shippers. Supplies are expected to be ample to fill all needs for the week. Some common defects being reported on romaine to include slight insect damage and mechanical and mildew. Green and red leaf are being reported to have similar defects as well. Weights are reported at 19-23 pounds on green and red leaf.
