Recently we introduced our Vision
Statement (Follow. Love. Serve.) which
is the “how to” of our Mission
Statement (connecting people to Jesus, for
eternity). More fully, the Vision Statement
is,
Follow Jesus in worship, Love
one another in Life Groups, and
Serve the world with acts of
kindness.
But what does it mean to serve the
world with acts of kindness? Basically this
means any activity that we engage in to
steward, care for, or manage God’s
creation (Genesis chapters 1 and 2).
This inc ludes everything from
counseling people or working the desk
at a local hospital to volunteering at an
animal rescue or helping with re-
foresting projects. The main idea is that
we find ways to care for and improve
our communities beyond the walls of
our church.
We know that many people in our
church, both young and old, are
involved in community service on a
regular basis. We want to highlight
these activities by putting them into a
booklet that we can give to our
members as well as to first-time
visitors. By doing this we hope to
encourage others to participate in
making our communities great.
Over the next several months you will
hear from Bruce Boyer and Chris
Comer about this project and how
you can participate by providing
information about your community
involvement. (See the Community Outreach
Page for more info) Thank you in advance
for helping with this important
project. And thank you also for helping
to make your community great!

Life Groups How did the early believers live and worship?
From the Bible we know that “Day after day they met as a group in the Temple, and they had
their meals together in their homes, eating with glad and humble hearts,
praising God and enjoying the good will of all the people.” Acts 2:46-47
It is this gathering together in fellowship to worship, learn, grow and love
one another in Jesus’ name that is the backbone of our Life Groups at
Fountain of Life. Some of us have meals while others do not but we all
gather to pray, learn and grow in our discipleship.
If you are not a member of a Life Group you are missing out on a basic function of the Body
of Christ. The early Christians knew this. Consider prayerfully if this can be added to your
worship and growth as a disciple and Jesus-follower. Members of our Life Groups give and
receive from these special gatherings. Could you receive more love? Could you give more
love to your Christian brothers and sisters? Join a small Life Group.
We would be glad to help you find the perfect group for you. Contact Pat Shaw (336-817-
7801) or Larry Scott (336-317-3371).

the baseboards and repairing the walls (drywall work). Look for an email reminder. If you are
not in this group and would like to be included in receiving emails on upcoming projects, con-
tact Deb Hayward.
Prayer The Prayer Group is back into the sanctuary! They are not changing their meeting
date but will resume meeting on Wednesday, 9:30-10:30am. An email is weekly to those
who would like to pray. Contact Johnn Marie Kruse, 885-5209 or [email protected] to

Choir As we gather for public worship, we worship our God by proclaiming the good news about Jesus.
This is the commission Jesus gave his people, and we honor Jesus when we carry out His commis-
sion. As the Holy Spirit helps, our pastor is called to proclaim the gospel on our behalf during public
worship, we confess our sins, we speak the Creed, and we sing Christian hymns, retelling the story
of God's love.
Have you noticed that the words the choir sings can be found on the worship screens? If the choir's
only task were to beautify the service, the words would hardly be important. But the choir's ministry
is more than that. You'll often notice that the choir anthem invariably amplifies the worship theme of
a particular Sunday as its text matches the focus of the Scripture reading and sermon. The choir’s
primary purpose in Lutheran worship is to proclaim the gospel and helps others to do so. Thank you
to our choir for helping us to worship and for strengthening our faith.
There is room for you! Please feel encouraged to be part of the choir. Help fill the seats in the new
choir space. We are always willing to welcome new participants in the choir.
Rehearsal are held on Wednesdays at 6:45 pm in the Music Ministries room. I’m also trying to
gather names of instrumentalists who might help to accompany choir pieces or present as part of a
solo or ensemble during worship. Please contact Chris Fair for further information.

Women Do you enjoy reading? Come join us and bring a friend for good discussion, fellowship and food.
For May we are reading and discussing "The Light Between the Oceans" by M.L. Stedman. For June
we are reading and discussing "Murder on the Orient Express" by Agatha Christie. We will also be
planning the first part of next year. This is the perfect opportunity to come join us and have a say in
what we read. Bring your ideas!
Overview: "Murder on the Orient Express" by Agatha Christie
Just after midnight, the famous Orient Express is stopped in its tracks by a snowdrift. By morning,
the millionaire Samuel Edward Ratchett lies dead in his compartment, stabbed a dozen times, his
door locked from the inside. Without a shred of doubt, one of his fellow passengers is the murder-
er. Isolated by the storm, detective Hercule Poirot must find the killer among a dozen of the dead
man's enemies, before the murderer decides to strike again.

involved and serve in a new way. If you are actively
connected to a local program or organization please
complete this brief survey available in the narthex
and return it in the offering plate. This directory will
be published in Fall 2017 and will continue to be
updated periodically.

Visitation Have you ever heard the term “Mayday, mayday”? Do you know what
it means? It is the internationally recognized distress radio signal used mostly by
aviators or mariners, to signal a life threating emergency. Someone needs help.
In our daily lives, we don’t have to yell “mayday” for help. All we need is to do what
God has directed us in Psalm 120:1; “I call on the Lord in my distress, and he answers
me”. He watches over us.
Please remember your Visitation Ministry is here for YOU TOO in all situations. I
enjoy bringing communion to those who are either sick or have difficulty getting to
church. I am also here to comfort you if you are in the hospital or just getting well
at home. You don’t have to yell “mayday”, just contact me at
[email protected], or at 336-993-5520 to set up a visit.
Looking forward to meeting with you.
Love in Christ, Jan
1. Describe your childhood: school, play,
sports, church
My childhood seemed pretty normal, I am a
product of the Stokes County School System. I
lost my father in an accident when I was a little
younger than Luke, but have a step-father who
stepped in and did a good job. My grandfather
was a Southern Baptist preacher, however my
church attendance growing up was pretty
sporadic. I have always enjoyed sports and played
baseball through my high school graduation.
2. How did you decide on a profession?
Looking back, I am not quite sure how I decided
on a profession. In hindsight, it seems that its just
something that I did.
3. Tell us about your family and how you
met Gwen.
Gwen and I met in high school. We did not
attend the same school, but we did work together
at the same fish camp. After working together for
about three months, she asked me to her prom in
January. I agreed and being that the prom was
four months away, thought that it might be a good
idea if we went out a few times before then. That
was 1999 and we married in 2003. We now have
four children; Liliana, Abigail, Luke, and Eva. Our
children range in age from 11 years to 6
months. We often get the question, "when are
you guys going to go for number 5?" Although an
entertaining idea, my urologist has assured me
that, unless Divinely willed, there will not be a
fifth Ashburn offspring. Until Luke was born, I
was the
last Ashburn in my particular line, so now all
that pressure that was mine has been officially
transferred to him.
4. What are your prayers for Fountain of
Life Lutheran Church?
My prayers for Fountain of Life Lutheran
Church are that we will continue to grow in the
Lord and in relationship with one another. I
also pray that we can find ways to reach out to
the community and bring others into a life of
faith.
5. Where do you want to retire?
Where would I like to retire? At this point, I
just want to be able to retire. A modest house
in the middle of a 5 million acre farm would be
nice.
6. What about you would we be
surprised at?
People might be surprised to know just how
boring I am. There is really nothing exotic
about me or my experiences.
