Spring 2015
Students learned the basics of computer programming with the worldwide
"Hour of Code" sponsored by code.org in December. Students were intro-
duced to free college level courses, through MOOC (massive online open
courses) platforms like edX and free college level textbook resources
through openstaxcollege.org; students also participated as citizen scien-
tists helping to analyze a wealth of data available at zooniverse.org.

This year my AICE students have been using Quizlet to create electronic "flash cards" for AICE
US History. In addition to creating a class set of cards on the causes leading up to the US Civil
War, we have explored and used other Quizlets, created by other "higher level" classes around

Fresh PAINT is proud to present classroom technology stories shared by Brevard Public Schools teachers.
BETC is one of Brevard’s marquee professional development events for class-room teachers, media specialists and other instructional leaders. It provides an opportunity for teachers to share ideas with like-minded colleagues about how
technology can be leveraged in the service of teaching and learning.
100+ breakout sessions showcase local talent: Your BPS colleagues “show and tell” what’s working in their classrooms. We have also secured a team of re-nowned featured speakers, several with national and international acclaim, to
share their practical ideas and insightful perspectives.
A complete list of sessions and speakers can be found on our BETC website: http://tinyurl.com/betc2015

Eau Gallie student Corey Wojick used to use an archaic AlphaSmart to do his class-
work, but he and teacher Jodie Shelton both became increasingly frustrated with the
antiquated technology. Ms. Shelton decided to do something about it, wrote a grant
for iPads to use in her language arts classes, gave him one to use,
and opened his eyes to a whole new world.
Though he has cerebral palsy, Corey doesn’t let it hinder his school-
work and doesn’t hesitate to experiment with the iPad to get the job
done.
“I like both devices,” Corey explains. “The AlphaSmart was nice be-
cause I could print out my work, but it sometimes lost information
and the batteries didn’t last that long. The iPad touch screen
makes it easier to work. Sometimes I don’t know where to push, but
that’s the fun part; trying to figure it out.”
Corey now emails his work to teachers instead of printing, or teachers grade what he writes directly from the iPad.
“I wish I’d had the iPads earlier in the year so that he’d have been able to use it longer,” Ms. Shelton says.

Kahoot.com has been a fantastic teaching discovery, allowing me to utilize quizzes made by others as well as
quickly and easily creating my own. The best part is how much the students love it and how engaged they are!

"Collaborizing Classroom" is the new program we used this year in order to improve our ability to identify rhetorical devices,
along with the purpose behind each one and the effect on the reader. My students thoroughly enjoyed this website, and they
hope we continue to use it.

Edline Blogging: Students would log into their Edline accounts weekly and answer an Essential Question or Thought Provoking
Question. They were asked to respond to at least one other classmate’s post with positive feedback.

We are currently working on a Claymation Digital Story book that presents a positive message. In prepara-
tion for the project students researched the history of animation on the computer, critiqued animated
shorts on YouTube. They will then create characters from modeling clay and scenic backdrops, photo-
graph the still images for their story with a digital camera, and then present the story in PowerPoint or if
they choose as a present as a movie.

proposed bills. And it's free!

In the Fall of 2014, the Florida Dept. of Education implemented a state plan that established pa-rameters for district- and school-level infrastructure and digital learning tools. Through a rigor-ous application process, eight BPS schools received technology packages. Below are some
teacher comments on how the Digital Classroom Plan (DCP) has changed their classrooms! Read more about DCP here: http://goo.gl/Z9FUeH
Our fourth graders used several different technology
programs to enhance their learning.
For the first project, students read a tall tale, then
added a new character to it, and continued the
story. When they finished writing, students used
Voki to create avatars of the new characters. The
characters introduced themselves!
Here’s a sample: http://goo.gl/gEYGW3
The second project was a PowerPoint slideshow
comparing and contrasting two different types of
snakes. This reading research project covered
reading, writing, and science standards.
Project three incorporated reading, writing, and
social studies standards. Students researched pen-
guins, then used Discovery Education Board
Builder to create “Wanted Posters” describing
their breed of penguin.

Because of a grant written by a team of MIHS teachers, my English I Honors students have daily access to Lenovo ThinkPad Windows 8 tablets. These devices, combined with Edline, Blackboard, Smartphones, and HRW online applications have allowed us to go virtually pa-perless for the 2nd semester--a true 21st-century experience!

I taught my first grade class to use Power-
Point this year; they had to learn to log in
to the computers, select the menu, select
Microsoft 2013, and then "the red P." We
created two folders on the desktop; one
called "learning," where we stored the PPTs
that we worked on together and one called
"work" where students were then able to
use what they learned on their own pro-
jects!

We explored Adobe Voice
and made our immigra-
tion projects come to life.
Adobe Voice is similar to
PhotoStory. You add pic-
tures for slides, record
your voice, and add music
in the background. The
program is an app on our iPad Airs. Each student was an immi-
grant from a particular country; they recorded their stories in the
first person. Students used accents when describing their voyages
to America and made it so real!

Thanks to grant funds from Boeing and Bright House, the
Cape View Elementary library has been filled with eager read-
ers and story writers! Mrs. Rice was able to purchase five
LEGO StoryStarter kits for the media classes to learn more
about story writing while building scenes with LEGOS!
The 3rd -6th graders dug into the kits and created awesome
platforms that became the focus of their creative writing and
digital storytelling projects. They learned to use the Legos
StoryVisualizer program as a powerful tool to develop and en-
hance the digital skills of all readers and writers.

For our "Abolitionist Hall of Fame" project, students had to choose an abolitionist (not already discussed in the unit), re-
search the person to determine their involvement in the abolition of slavery, and create a 1-2 minute movie using the Explain Eve-
rything app. Videos introduce the person and explain why he or she should be considered a hero.

My students scanned QR codes that linked to several sites to research pio-
neer life in Florida. They then used photos, pictures, and voice recordings
to create pioneer journals using the Educreations App on the iPads. The
result? Personalized journals of every-day life as a Florida pioneer.

Kindergarten students worked collaboratively with 3rd grade class buddies to write several reasons
why they love Roosevelt Elementary School. For this assignment, students snapped photos using
the iPad camera or created illustrations, then wrote about the school using the Scribble Press app.

Science or Social Studies clip on Brainpopjr.com,
they review the material learned by recording themselves answering
questions, and then they took turns showing the
class.

My students used the ThingLink app on our IPads to create interactive primary sources. They started
off with photos depicting slavery, added interac-tive links to videos and websites they researched
on slave culture and the Underground Railroad. Last, they embedded their ThingLinks onto their
class wiki pages.

My students were excited to use the QR code generators. We checked out a class set of iPads and wrote “I Spy”
riddles for our class books. The students and their par-ents then got to scan the codes to see the answers. It was
exciting to see how all the students were so involved with rhyming words and the use of adjectives!!!!

Aloise does many digi-
tal activities with her
students. Students at the Florida Teens Read celebration at Satellite High
School used Kahoot! to see who knew the most book trivia about this
year's books. Winners won Dunkin Donuts gift cards.
Satellite High School book clubs grew and so did their need for ebook
technology. They acquired Kindles and began using them to download
books for the school’s two book clubs.
Missy Hendley's History classes came to the media center to do Wordles and Tagxedos about presidents. Stu-
dents imported pictures or symbols to create shapes and chose words selectively to best illustrate their presi-
dents.

Seventh grade students in Mrs. Straub's Language Arts and Mrs.
Moody's Civics classes created comics to express the heroic
actions of civil rights leaders. Students worked with Mrs. Wood-
brey in the media center to research the leader they chose, and then
used the "Comic Life!" app on iPods (yes, tiny iPods!) to create their
comic. They then published to their Google Apps for Education ac-
counts.
