GRADES ARE MORE IMPORTANT IN HIGH SCHOOL

• Your child’s first year grades are part of their grade point average (GPA).

• Colleges will look at your high school grades

• Grades help students obtain scholarships (specifically, HOPE)

• Extra-curricular involvement: Clubs, Sports, etc. We have over 20 clubs and over 30 athletic teams.

ORGANIZATION MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

The keys are:

• Knowing when work is due

• Planning how to do quality work and getting it done on time

• Setting short-term goals that you can reach

• Writing down assignments for the day, week, month and semester in a planner or calendar. (Include any papers and tests.)

You must:• earn 28 units• pass all parts of

the Georgia High School Graduation test (Writing, Language, Math, Science, Social Studies)

SEMESTER SYSTEM

At the end of each semester, final grades for the courses taken are entered on the permanent record.

On the block schedule, if all courses are passed, you may earn 4 units each semester.

BLOCK SCHEDULE

Students typically take two academic classes and two elective classes

Students take a year’s worth of coursework for 4 subjects each semester.

Classes are approximately 90 minutes

8:22-9:52 (1st block)

9:58-11:28 (2nd block)

11:34-1:29 (3rd block)

1:35-3:05- (4th block)

REGISTERING FOR CLASSES

• High School staff will bring registration forms to middle school.

• Teachers will recommend academic classes• Students/parents select electives• Parent night that evening discussing

registration process.• Forms will require teacher, parent, and

student signatures• Once form is completed, changes will be

made only by necessity.• Schedule will be picked up in August.

End of Course Test (EOCT)

Any student enrolled in and/or receiving credit for an EOCT, regardless of grade level, will be required to take the EOCT upon completion of that course

EOCT is 15 % of the final grade Student must have a final course grade of a 70 or

above to pass the test and earn credit towards graduation

EOCT: Math I, Math II, US History, Economics, Biology, Physical Science, 9th Grade English, 11th Grade English

ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY

• Physical Exam (must be on Georgia form)• School Insurance or proof of individual accident coverage• Signed parental permission form• Satisfaction of all Georgia High School, system, and school

policies• All ninth graders are automatically eligible 1st semester• After 1st semester, students must pass 3 out of 4 courses and be

on track for graduation

Lunch

Students eat lunch during 3rd block Students report to their 3rd period teacher and

are dismissed by schedule There are three, 25 minute lunch periods during

this block Cost of lunch is $1.60 Students can also bring their own lunch 9th Grade students sit with all grade levels

Lockers

• Students will be able to purchase a locker at open house for $10

• Students taking PE will have access to a PE locker but will need to buy an additional lock.

• PE locks should be removed after each class period.

Homeroom

Students are assigned to a homeroom that meets bi-monthly with an advisor.Advisors discuss important information specific to the student’s grade level and helps students register for classes every year.Advisement topics include:

* Hope Scholarship, 4-year plans, goal setting, test taking and study skills

ATTENDANCE/TARDIES

• Students are expected to attend school and be on time daily. In the case a student must be out, documentation must be provided by the parent/student within 48 hours. According to state law, only certain excuses are permitted.

• All students who are late (ex/un) must sign in at the main office. Accumulation of tardies will result in a discipline referral. Transportation issues are not excusable.

School Nurse

• Gives care for injuries and illnesses occurring at school

• Gives medications/procedures for special medical conditions

• Students cannot have medicines, prescription or non-prescription, in their possession at school. Inhalers and insulin are an exception.

Checking Students In and Out

• Checking student out of school: please send note with student in the morning before the bell rings with specific dismissal time and phone number to verify check out. Faxes and phone checkouts will not be accepted.

• Student leaves early: must have medical note or court appointment note to be excused

• All Students should be to school on time• Tardy: only excused with a medical or court

appointment note-car trouble is not acceptable excuse
