Freshwater Animal Diversity Assessment (FADA)
Part 2: Database statusAaike De Wever, Koen Martens
FADA-database: status early 2010
• FADA-book published in 2008 providing complete overview of the freshwater animal diversity
• Wide expert network• Plans for database and joint analyses discussed during meeting in 2008
• Nevertheless, the number of checklists available was rather limited

Key goals of BioFresh
Improve capacity to protect and manage freshwater biodiversity in the face of global change
– Build a freshwater biodiversity information platformData portal and metadatabase: data.freshwaterbiodiversity.eu
– Predict freshwater biodiversity responses to multiple stressors(modeling), disseminate results through scientific publications and other means
– Improve awareness on freshwater biodiversity status, trends, conservation, from biofreshblog.com to policy briefs
FADA-checklist work during BioFresh
• Ensured the publication of data on 8 groups, increasing the number of available lists from 5 to 13 during the first year
• Major effort for integrating the World Trichoptera Checklist• Exchange of data with GBIF and Catalogue of Life
Exchange of FADA data with Catalogue of Life

Moving the FADA-database forward
• The “easy ones” had been done• We experienced the amount of work that goes into this…… but could not fully justify to do it all on BioFresh
• Project and workshop sponsored by BioFresh, RBINS and VLIZ to mobilise new data, esp. for macroinvertebrate groups – 2013 workshop
• Collaboration with VLIZ to exchange data between FADA and WoRMS – AquaRES project
Integration recently completed and pending: insect groups (1/2)
• Coleoptera – approached specialists for families and received species lists for 14k species – Amphizoidae, Aspidytidae, Paelobiidae (Anders Nilsson) - 50 names– Chrysomeliidae (Elisabeth Geiser) - 170 species – Dytiscidae (Anders Nilsson) - 6400 names – Gyrinidae (Paolo Mazzoldi) - 1192 names – Haliplidae (Bernard van Vondel) - 384 names – Hydraenidae (JächManfred) - 4090 names – Noteridae (Anders Nilsson) - 420 names – Psephenidae (JächManfred) - 380 names – Scirtidae (Rafal Ruta & Hiroyuki Yoshitomi) - 1400 names
• Coleoptera – fortcoming lists– Elmidae (Jäch Manfred et al.) - 1000 names – Hydrophiloidae (Marek Przewozny, Martin Fikacek and Andrew Short) – 4000 names
Integration recently completed and pending: insect groups (2/2)
• Diptera – received lists for 17k species– Culicidae (Pollie Rueda) - 3500 names – Chironomidae: Tanytarsiini (Gilka Wojciech) - 252 names – Simuliidae (Peter Adler & Doug Currie) - 4808 names – Tipuloidae (Herman De Jong & Pjotr Oosterbroek) - 9093 names
• Diptera – forthcoming lists– Chironomidae: Buchonomyiinae, Chilenomyiinae, Podonominae, Aphroteniinae, Tanypodinae, usambaromyiinae, Diamesinae, Prodiamesinaeand Telmatogetoninae and Orthocladiinae (Patrick Ashe & James P. O’Connor) – resp. 2000 and 3858 names
– Other Diptera groups (RüdigerWagner)
Potential groups
• Heteroptera (to be received)– Dan Polhemus– the list of his father John Polhemus
• Odonata– Link to odonata.info – same data as exchanged with CoL?– Jan van Tol to be recontacted at later stage
• Amphibia - Species checklist available through Amphibian Species of the World - Darrel Frost– Website and database being updated– Selection of freshwater ones in collaboration with Jörn Köhler and Miguel Vences– Potential for collaboration with CoL?
AquaRES: collaboration with WoRMS and RAMS
• Some overlap in terms of groups and editors: – need for exchange– rationalise data management
• Improve and extend existing databases– import tools– geographic information entry tool– checklist publication
• Contribute to the LifeWatch taxonomic backbone• Improve data exchange with international initiatives
AquaRES: focus groups
Integrate and extend lists for (among others):• Annelida:
– Hirudinea, Oligochaeta and Polychaeta
• Crustacea: – Cladocera, Copepoda, Amphipoda, Decapoda and Mysidacea, Isopoda
• TardigradaImproving, generating data for: • Platyhelminthes-Turbellaria• Rotifera• Nematomorpha• Arachnida-Halacaridae• Nematoda

FADA / AquaRES survey results
Consultation of FADA experts May 2015Aaike De Wever
FADA / AquaRES survey background
• “exploring which updates and improvements would be of interest for our editor network”
• Main question in the framework of AquaRES:– Selection and testing of suitable geographical regions
• Survey ran from 5-27th of May 2015 (with reminder emails on the 7th and 22nd)
• Circulated to 91 experts (excluding project partners)
Questions
• Geographic regions– Which, how to provide data
• Checklist management– Current management, desired management
• Checklist publication tool– Known, options
