2019 Fresno State Football

Sitting 0-2 for the first time since 2014 Despite even its worst season in program history in 2016, the Bulldogs still did not fall victim of dropping to 0-2 to start the season. The last time Fresno State started the season 0-2 was in 2014, it was also the last time the Bulldogs opened the season 0-3. In 2014, Fresno State opened the season against three-straight Power 5 programs (at USC, at Utah, vs. Nebraska).

→ Fresno State lost by an average of 40.5 points per game in its first two losses of the season in 2014 (USC- L, 52-13 / Utah- L, 59-27). Fresno State lost by an average of 5.5 points per game in 2019 (USC- L, 31-23 / Minnesota (L, 38-35 2OT).

→ Fresno State is one of two schools 0-2 in 2019, and one of eight FBS schools without a win in 2019. The Bulldogs and Vanderbilt share the same distinction of being 0-2 and both having started the season against two P5 opponents as the Commodores opened week 1 against Georgia and week 2 against Purdue, while also having a week 3 bye alike Fresno State.

Always a Dog fight → Fresno State has suffered just six losses in its last 27 games.

→ Fresno State has not lost by double-digits since Oct. 28, 2017 - a 10-point loss to UNLV.

An odd feeling after 2018 Fresno State has as many losses in the first three weeks of the 2019 calendar season as it did for the entirety of the 2018 season after going 12-2 and recording its most wins in a single season in the 97-year history of the program.

Team Captains Seniors Jorge Reyna (QB), Juju Hughes (DB), Mykal Walker (LB) and junior Netane Muti (OL) were named the Bulldogs’ 2019 team captains on Friday, Aug. 23. The captains are elected by votes from their peers.

This is the first time in Tedford’s three seasons that four were named captains and not two. In the previous two seasons a duo served as the team’s permanent captains throughout the season while two other individuals would be named on a game-by-game basis. It is anticipated that two of the four 2019 captains could step down on an alternating basis to allow game-by-game captains similar to 2017-18 during the 2019 season.

Still the favorite to Win the West Despite two tight nonconference losses to start 2019, the Bulldogs were picked in the preseason to repeat as West Division champions and that team goal is still very much within reach. As the first-place pick for the West, Fresno State earned its fourth division leading bid in the preseason media polls dating back to 2013, and second in as many years (2013, 2014, 2018 and 2019). The Bulldogs went on to win the West each season that they were the first-place pick in the preseason polls. Along with a predicted first-place finish in its division, Fresno State secured three preseason all-conference selections in senior tight end Jared Rice, senior linebacker Mykal Walker and senior defensive back Juju Hughes.

2019 Fresno State Football

Series History vs. Sacramento State The Bulldogs and Hornets have only met three times in program history with Fresno State leading the series, 3-0. All three meetings have been at Bulldog Stadium with the last on Sept. 10, 2016 when Fresno State used a 21-point fourth quarter to run away with a 31-3 victory.

The Bulldogs have not allowed the Hornets to score more than seven points in any game in the series. Sacramento State scored seven points against the ‘Dogs in 1972 and only three in both of the contests since then.

→ The Hornets enter the 2019 matchup averaging 44.7 points per game through three games.

Scouting the Sacramento State Hornets Sacramento State is 2-1 this season, fresh off of a 50-0 home victory over Northern Colorado on Sept. 14 - the same Northern Colorado team that opened the season at San Jose State on Aug. 29 and fell to the Spartans 35-18. The Hornets have outscored their opponents 134-38 this season with two games of scoring 50-plus points.

Junior Quarterback Kevin Thomson is coming off of a career-high week in which he tossed for 361 yards and five touchdowns against Northern Colorado. Thomson is averaging 356 total offensive yards per game with 1,068 total yards this season.

The lone loss for Sacramento State came in its only road game at Arizona State on Sept. 6. The Hornets only allowed ASU to score three points before halftime, trailing 3-0 through the first two quarters. Arizona State pulled ahead in the second half, but Sacramento State came within three in the fourth quarter. A 72-yard touchdown pass to running back Eno Benjamin would seal the game for Arizona State late in the fourth quarter.

The Hornets have 10 players who have scored touchdowns this season, led by Elijah Dotson and Marcus Fulcher who have four apiece. Defensively, Allen Perryman leads the way for the Hornets with 18 total tackles (15 solo) and one interception. Sacramento State has seven defensive players who own double digit tackles after three games.

‘Dogs vs. FCS Opponents Saturday’s game will be Fresno State’s 15th against an FCS school since 2000 and the previous 14 have been Fresno State victories at Bulldog Stadium. In 2018, Fresno State defeated Idaho, 79-13, to open the season.

→ The Bulldogs have won each of their FCS meetings this decade by an average of 32.2 points per game.

‘Dogs vs. current Big Sky teams The ‘Dogs are 90-38-4 (.682) all-time against the 13 current members of the Big Sky. Fresno State most recently defeated Idaho, 79-13, at home last season.

→ The last loss Fresno State suffered to a team currently affiliated with the Big Sky came against Montana State on Nov. 17, 1984.

→ Head coach Jeff Tedford is 6-0 all-time against current Big Sky members. Five of those wins came as the head coach at Cal, defeating Sacramento State (2005), Portland State (2006), Eastern Washington (2009), UC Davis (2010) and Southern Utah (2012). The Golden Bears averaged 48.8 points per game and an average margin of victory of 36.8 in those five contests.

Revisiting last time vs. Sacramento State (2016) Fresno State used a 21-point fourth quarter on Sept. 10, 2016 to separate itself from Sacramento State for a 31-3 win at Bulldog Stadium the last time these two faced off.

Sacramento State had a total of three plays snapped while in Fresno State territory in that game. And one of those three plays happened in part to when the Hornets recovered its own punt on the Fresno State 27-yard line - the ball brushed off a Bulldog player in punt coverage, causing a fumble recovery with six seconds left in the first half. Sacramento State followed by converting a 44-yard field goal as time expired - that would be the last play held in Fresno State territory for the remainder of the game.

→ Fresno State held Sacramento State to 185 total yards offense last time they played.→ In a season to forget, Fresno State’s week two victory would be its only win in 2016.

FCS visiting Bulldog Stadium under Coach Tedford The Bulldogs’ margin of victory has not been slim when FCS teams visit Bulldog Stadium in program history. In particular, the ‘Dogs have dominated visiting FCS teams by 66 points per game in Jeff Tedford’s first two years as head coach.

Tedford took over a 1-11 program at the conclusion of 2016 and led the ‘Dogs to a 66-0 home opening win against FCS opponent Incarnate Word in 2017. After a historic turnaround season for the program with a 10-4 record in 2017, Tedford and the Bulldogs rolled into 2018 with the same momentum.

The Bulldogs hosted Idaho in their 2018 home opener, where the ‘Dogs again defeated their FCS opponent by 66 points. This time, Fresno State earned a 79-13 victory in its opener.

Home Sweet Home Taking a loss at Bulldog Stadium is an unfamiliar feeling for Jeff Tedford and his Bulldogs - the loss suffered last time out against Minnesota was just the second during Tedford’s tenure at Fresno State. The Bulldogs are 11-2 on their home field since the start of the 2017 season and until falling to Minnesota, the Bulldogs owned an eight-game winning streak at home.

Fantastic Freshmen A group of first-year Bulldogs have been making their names known on the field, on both ends of the ball. The ‘Dogs have six true freshmen who have seen game action this season, including three who have picked up starts.

→ Levelle Bailey, LB - Bailey has appeared in both games at LB for the Bulldogs this season. After picking up one tackle at USC, the true freshman answered back with seven tackles against Minnesota a week later. He also recorded 2.5 tackles for a loss of eight yards and a sack. Bailey picked up his first collegiate start against Minnesota and leads the freshmen on the defensive side of the ball with eight tackles.

→ Jalen Cropper, WR - Cropper picked up his first collegiate start in the Bulldogs’ season opener at USC and was the ball carrier on the first play of the season. The Parlier, Calif. native has appeared in both games this season, totaling four carries for 39 yards with a 13-yard rush at USC.

→ Jamal Glaspie, WR - Another true freshman who has seen playing time in both games this season, Glaspie recorded one catch for 14 yards against Minnesota. Glaspie earned his first collegiate start in the season opener at USC.

→ Randy Jordan, DB - Jordan, a Valley native, has appeared in both games this season as a true freshman.

→ Deshawn Ruffin, DB - A Fresno native out of Sunnyside HS, Ruffin has appeared in both games for the ‘Dogs. The true freshman has picked up six total tackles this season, all solo. After charting one tackle at USC, Ruffin came out and picked up five against Minnesota a week later.

→ Evan Williams, DB - Williams is another true freshman who has appeared in both games this season. He picked up his first collegiate tackle at USC.

As expected, 2019 appears to be the season of new faces for the Bulldogs. In recent years, Fresno State has had true freshmen emerge from the greatness of the returners and this year won’t be any different.

Let’s talk about QB1 There was an interception under two minutes on the road that sealed the win for USC on Aug. 31 and an interception in double overtime that ended the game for Minnesota’s win at Bulldog Stadium ... there’s no getting around two untimely interceptions ... and while a bye weekend extended the hurt from the latest loss, the number of positives start with a first-year Division I starter leading the Bulldogs to two near wins over Power 5 teams ...

In those games, Reyna accounted for 613 yards total offense, with 544 yards passing and 69 net rushing yards. He is completing 58.1 percent of his passes (43-of-74) and tossed five touchdown passes. Reyna has also had a knack for the explosive play, accounting for nine chunk pass plays (20+ yards) in two games.

→ The offense is producing 29.0 points per game, which ranks tied 71st best ... but it ranks 12th best in the nation for teams that have played at least two Power 5 teams over the first three weeks of action.

Handful of options There was a good reason over 35 percent of Fresno State’s receiving yards went to one person in 2018, his name was KeeSean Johnson who is starting for the Arizona Cardinals in 2019. A year later, things are shaking out as predicted. After two games in 2018, Johnson was the sole Bulldog to crack 100 yards (207 yards), after two games in 2019, Fresno State has three pass catchers with better than 100 yards (Chris Coleman, Derrion Grim and Zane Pope).

Last time out, nine different Bulldogs had a reception while Grim, Pope and Ronnie Rivers each had five catches each.

Once a decade tight end Tight end Jared Rice has arguably been the most productive Fresno State tight end since Bear Pascoe (2005-08), who made himself a seven-year NFL career. Rice, a senior this season, broke Pascoe’s single season best marks of receptions and receiving yards by a tight end as a junior - now he closing in on career records set by Pascoe and Marty Thompson.

→ Bear Pascoe owns the records for career receptions (112) and receiving yards (1,294), respectively, by a tight end.

→ Marty Thompson, brother of current Bulldogs’ tight end coach Scott Thompson, owns the most single season touchdowns (8) - set in 1991 - and career touchdowns (11) by a tight end in program history.

Under 30 points correlation USC’s 31-23 win in the season opener halted the Bulldogs’ then-nation-best streak of 25 games holding opponents to 30 points or less that dated back two seasons -- Sept. 16, 2017 - Washington (L, 48-16).

Again, in week 2, Minnesota surpassed 30 points, although that was aided by two overtime periods. But nevertheless, Fresno State has allowed 30-plus points in two consecutive games - which last happened in 2017 when the Bulldogs faced Alabama (Sept. 9) and Washington (Sept. 16) in back-to-back games.

In each game the Bulldogs have allowed 30-plus points, they have allowed a game-opening touchdown drive to a Power 5 opponent.

→ In 30 career games at Fresno State, when an opponent scores more than 30 points against Tedford, the Bulldogs are 0-4. The last time a Tedford coached team won a game when allowing more than 30 points was a 50-31 Cal win over Southern Utah (Big Sky) on Sept. 8, 2012.

Family affair The Bulldogs have a unique situation on their hands as brothers Jared and Justin Rice have both earned starts for Fresno State over the last two games. Jared has made 17 consecutive starts at tight end while Justin has made his first two starts at linebacker.

Justin Rice has actually started in three games in his career, as his first came in 2016 at running back as a true freshman. His brother Jared did not play in that game.

→ Across the FBS, the same can be said for just 11 other institutions that sported brothers in their week one starting lineups.

Forcing turnovers under Tedford After finishing tied for 11th a season ago in turnovers gained, the Bulldogs have continued where last season left off as they currently sit tied for ninth with seven total takeaways.

→ Of the 19 teams with at least seven turnovers gained, only two teams, Fresno State and Notre Dame, have played less than three games. The two teams rank tied for second behind South Florida (3.67) in takeaways per game with 3.5.

→ Fresno State’s seven turnovers forced is one shy of the eight that it produced through two games in 2018. The Bulldogs recorded seven of those eight takeaways in the 2018 season opener versus Idaho.

Popping the ball out Forcing fumbles is an art. It hasn’t always been a trait of Bulldog football teams but through two games this season the Bulldogs have forced seven, recovering five those which ranks fifth nationally. Surprisingly, all five recoveries have come from a different Bulldog.

→ Fresno State is the only team ranked in the top five in fumbles recovered which has played less than three games.

→ Fresno State is already halfway to double figure fumble recoveries with at least 10 games remaining in the season, a mark that only five Bulldog teams have achieved since 2010.

→ The five recoveries has matched the season total for 2010 while surpassing the totals from 2011 and 2016 which both had four.

Going against conventional thought While a barometer for Fresno State in the win/loss column under Jeff Tedford has been through the team’s turnover margin, that hasn’t proved to be the case this season. Entering 2019, Tedford’s Bulldog teams held a 12-2 record when winning the turnover battle. Despite winning the turnover battle against both USC and Minnesota, Fresno State lost both games.

→ Fresno State had won 11 straight games under Tedford when winning the turnover battle prior to the last three occurrences.

→ Fresno State has lost its last three games when winning the turnover battle. Each game has been lost by eight points or less.

→ While the Bulldogs have lost their last three games when winning the turnover battle, the team ended the 2018 with three consecutive wins when losing the battle (San Jose State, Boise State, Arizona State).

Replacing the MW’s best With the departure of Jeff Allison after the junior was named 2018 Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year, the Bulldogs entered the offseason with a big hole to fill in the middle of their defense. In stepped 6-foot-3, 230-pound Mykal Walker and the senior hasn’t disappointed. With a team-leading 24 tackles through two games, Walker ranks fifth in the FBS in tackles per game at 12. Which puts him on pace for 144 (12 games) which would surpass each of Allison’s totals from the past two seasons.

→ Walker is one of four linebackers in the Mountain West to rank in the top six in the FBS in tackles per game.

→ Playing defensive end in 2018, Walker led the team in tackles for loss, quarterback hurries, forced fumbles, fumble recoveries and blocked kicks and was second in tackles, sacks and defensive touchdowns.

→ Eight months after being named Defensive MVP of the 2018 Mountain West Championship game where he recorded a season-high 12 tackles to go with 2.5 TFLs and a fumble recovery, Walker was named to the watch lists for the Butkus (linebacker), Bednarik (defensive) and Nagurski (defensive) awards.

→ Mykal is following in the footsteps of his late father Michael Walker who similarly played at Fresno State in 1985-86 after redshirting as a Bulldog in 1984. His father transferred to Fresno State from College of Marin and tallied 65 tackles and 6.5 sacks at Fresno State under Jim Sweeney.

Making a name for himself With older brother Jared finding himself on a pair of national watch lists during the summer, Justin Rice has stepped out of his elder’s shadow through two games this season. In two starts, Rice has been a disruptive force for the Bulldogs’ defense, forcing two turnovers in each game. He also ranks second on the team in tackles with 21, recording double digit numbers in both outings, and is tied for the team lead in passes defended with three.

→ Rice is one of three players in the nation to have caused at least four turnovers. Rice though has played in just two games, averaging a FBS-best 2.0 caused turnovers per game.

→ Rice is one of three players in the FBS to have forced three fumbles while his 1.5 per game ranks No. 1. The junior also ranks 16th nationally in total tackles with 21.

Atkins leading the line With the defensive line being one of the most experienced position groups for the Bulldogs entering the season, Kevin Atkins has stepped up as an early leader. As the most of experienced defensive lineman (30 games), the junior leads Fresno State with two sacks and seven tackles. The 1.0 sacks per game ranks tied for 20th in the FBS.

Stepping in Against Minnesota, Fresno State’s defense saw new players step into prominent roles out of necessity. With an ejection to Arron Mosby in the first quarter, true freshman Levelle Bailey slid into the SAM position for the reminder of the game, finishing with seven tackles, a sack and a team-high 2.5 TFLs. On the perimeter, Chris Gaston left the game with an injury and did not return, forcing another true freshman, Deshawn Ruffin, into action. The corner finished with five tackles on the night.

Hail Cesar Cesar Silva, in his first two career Fresno State games, went 3-for-3 kicking field goals at USC -- the last time a Bulldog kicker went 100 percent with at least three attempts was Kody Kroening on Oct. 8, 2016 vs. Nevada -- and at home against Minnesota he went 2-of-3 with his one miss coming from 50 yards.

→ Silva connected for a season-best 48-yard field goal versus Minnesota

→ Silva is 5-of-6 this season and has made kicks from 45 and 46 yards, in addition to his 48-yarder versus Minnesota.

The Fresno State football team has been picked to repeat as West Division champions by the media, the Mountain West announced on July 23 prior to kicking off the 2019 football Media Days in Las Vegas. As the first-place pick for the West, Fresno State has earned its fourth division leading bid in the preseason media polls dating back to 2013, and second in as many years (2013, 2014, 2018 and 2019). The Bulldogs have prevailed and won the West in every season that they have been the first-place pick in the preseason polls.

Along with a predicted first-place finish in its division, Fresno State secured three preseason all-conference selections in senior tight end Jared Rice, senior linebacker Mykal Walker and senior defensive back Juju Hughes. It was been a busy July for Fresno State’s three preseason All-Mountain West selections as each of the senior Bulldogs have been named to seven watch lists for awards in their respective positions. Rice, Walker and Hughes are continuing their successes from the 2018 season as each were named to either the All-Mountain West first or second team a season ago.

Jeff TedfordHead Coach3rd Season | Fresno State (1992)Jeff Tedford, 57, inherited a 1-11 football program when he took over the reins of his alma mater and in two seasons all he’s done as the 19th head football coach in Fresno State history is lead the program to a 22-6 record, a 2018 Mountain West Championship, two MW West division titles and two bowl wins. In 2018, in addition to defeating Boise State on the road in overtime, 19-16, for Fresno State’s first conference championship since 2013, the Bulldogs capped the season with a 31-20 triumph over Arizona State to win the Mitsubishi Motors Las Vegas Bowl. The bowl win left the Bulldogs with their first 12-win season in the 97-year history of the program. This, one season after engineering one of the greatest turnarounds in FBS history guiding the Bulldogs to a 10-4 record, an appearance in the MW title game and a Hawai’i Bowl win over Houston. The renaissance under Tedford has led to FBS history being made as Fresno State became the first team to secure back-to-back double-digit winning seasons following a double-digit loss season. The 2018 Bulldogs finished nationally ranked in the final rankings of the season for the first time since 2004. Fresno State finished ranked No. 18 in both the AP Top 25 and Coaches poll, announced Jan. 8, 2019. It was the best finish in the AP Top 25 in program history, besting No. 22 in 2004. The ‘Dogs also held a No. 21 ranking in the final College Football Playoff poll released on Dec. 2, 2018. Individual accolades in 2018 included Tedford being named an Eddie Robinson Award finalist and a Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award finalist. Fresno State sported 15 all-conference honorees in 2018, including the league’s Defensive Player of the Year in linebacker Jeff Allison. In addition, 19 student-athletes were named to the Fall Academic All-Mountain West team. With a 10-4 record in his first season, Fresno State became the third team in FBS history to turn a double-digit loss season (2016) into a double-digit win season (2017) the following year. The season included an appearance in the nation’s top 25, clinching the Mountain West’s West Division crown and leading the ‘Dogs to their first appearance in the MW Championship game since 2014. He also guided the ‘Dogs to the program’s first bowl victory since 2007 with their win at the Hawai’i Bowl. Great success brought great notoriety as Tedford was named the 2017 Mountain West Coach of the Year, was a semifinalist for the George

Munger College Coach of the Year Award presented by the Maxwell Football Club, a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award, and the AFCA Region-5 Coach of the Year. While Tedford was honored as the league’s coach of the year, the team had 16 student-athletes recognized with MW postseason honors - the most for the Bulldogs in a single-season since joining the conference in 2012. In the classroom, the ‘Dogs also set a team-best number since joining the conference as they had 24 named to the Fall Academic All-Mountain West team. Tedford, a former Bulldog quarterback and Fresno State assistant coach, returned to the Valley after holding the position of offensive consultant for the Washington Huskies – a 2016 College Football Playoff team. Tedford assumed the role of acting head coach on Nov. 27, 2016, following the conclusion of the 2016 season as Eric Kiesau carried out interim head coaching duties for the remaining two games on the 2016 schedule following Tedford’s introductory press conference. Tedford was officially hired on Nov. 10, 2016. Tedford, who was an already proven winner on the West Coast, came to the Valley with 11 years of head coaching experience at the Division I level – having led the California Golden Bears to 82 wins from 2002-2012. He left as the school’s all-time winningest coach. Tedford’s ties to the Valley and Fresno State run deep. He played quarterback at Fresno State in 1981-82 under Jim Sweeney and coached at Fresno State under Sweeney from 1987-88 and 1992-96, and under a then-first-year head coach Pat Hill in 1997. Tedford’s coaching career started at Fresno State, volunteering as an assistant for the 1987-88 seasons. From there he picked up his first full-time position as an assistant for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League – a familiar league in which he played quarterback for six seasons after his collegiate career at Fresno State. He returned to Fresno State in 1992 as the quarterbacks coach and served as the offensive coordinator for the Bulldogs over the ensuing five seasons. Tedford graduated from Warren High School in Downey, California and attended Cerritos Junior College for two seasons before becoming the Bulldogs’ quarterback in 1981. He and his wife Donna have two children, Taylor and Quinn.
