Excursion to Top Arts On Thursday 8th May our Studio Arts students went to the Top Arts exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, Federation Square. They also walked down the famous Hosier Lane and saw the colourful graffiti art. It made an interesting contrast to the comfort and glamour of the NGV as an exhibition space. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Top Arts exhibitions in Melbourne. As was the case last year, the selection team included Seymour College's Colin Macleod-Smith who was the regional representative, appointed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. The exhibition of top VCE Art and Studio Arts folios from 2013 looked fabulous and our students seemed inspired to develop their own works further. Ms. Milburn

Principal’s Report Congratulations to Jennifer Attard and Paul Younger. The college community would like to congratulate both Jennifer and Paul on their respective successes in moving on in their careers. Jennifer has successfully gained a leadership position at Numurkah Secondary College as their new Assistant Principal. Jennifer in her short time at Seymour has been a teacher, acting Assistant Principal and careers coordinator. Paul will be missed by all, especially by the students and staff in our F – 6 learning communities. Paul’s enthusiastic approach to sport has encouraged all students to have a go, which is evident in all of his classes. Paul is moving on to a totally new career with Australian Border Protection. To both Jennifer and Paul, thank you for your contributions to Seymour College and best of luck in your careers. Thanking our Volunteers Seymour College would not operate as efficiently as it does without the help and assistance from our very large team of parent volunteers who give up their time to assist in many areas of the College. Last week was Volunteers’ Week and the College held a thank you morning tea and presented certificates of appreciation to those who attended. It was pleasing to see so many faces all eager to assist our students and it was pleasing for the college to be able to recognise their individual and collective contributions to education. David Mills Acting Principal

Our College is a busy and vibrant learning community which provides a range of activities throughout the term. This week we are celebrating ‘Education Week’ which involves inviting our community into the College. We are showcasing the programs and learning centres across the College and are looking forward to the Special Persons Day on Friday afternoon from 12.45pm. Thank-you to all parents and carers who ensured that our Years 3, 5, 7,and 9 students had the best opportunity to complete their NAPLAN tests last week, had the correct equipment and were able to catch up some of the tests they may have missed. We look forward to the school and individual results which will be published in Term 3. Senior students are expected to be rereading, summarising and completing set tasks for their examinations. Please encourage your child to use the resources we have at school to assist with this routine – for example, Wednesday study afternoons, subject teachers and coordinators are present. Four new policies which are directly related to Teaching and Learning were ratified by School Council last Wednesday. They were; Curriculum Policy, Assessment Policy, Reporting Policy and Reading Recovery Policy. I will send a notification via the school app when these are loaded onto the school app and the website so that you can familiarise yourself with them. A great question to ask your child at the end of the day – ‘What did you learn today?” Gail Hardman, Assistant Principal – Teaching and Learning

Special Education B SEB made some delicious chocolate rice crackles for Mother’s Day. Everyone had a turn at mixing the rice bubbles and cocoa together and then spooning them into patty cases. We enjoyed taste testing them too, they were delicious!

News from Foundation Foundation classes have been studying ‘The Weather ‘ over the past few weeks. The children view and change a daily calendar which includes symbols of the weather of the day. The children are becoming more aware of the need to remove warm clothing in the classroom, and wearing warmer clothes in the mornings when the weather is a little cooler. Please remember to label all school jumpers clearly with your child’s name as they are removed regularly when your child is in the warm classroom. A big thank-you to all our Foundation Volunteers who were recognized at the Special Morning Tea last Friday as part of ‘Volunteer Week.” Twenty-one Foundation parents were invited and each received a ‘Thank-you certificate’ personally signed by our Acting Principal David Mills. Thanks so much to all these volunteers.

News from 1 & 2 ….. The 1/2 area has started its science inquiry unit and students are developing a strong awareness of their senses. Activities have engaged students, and they are already looking forward to the excursion to the Bendigo Discovery Centre next month. A successful Cross Country day was staged, with all students participating to the best of their abilities.

Congratulations to all of our winners.

Parents please remember to label all clothing especially jumpers with the cool mornings and warm days, as a lot of children are removing their jumpers and it is difficult to keep track of who they belong to without names. It is also a good idea to show your children where and how you have named them, such as their first or last name or initials.

The Victorian Government has partnered with Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen (SALT) to provide school-aged girls with hands-on experience of working in non-traditional occupations, through workshop demonstration days. Last Thursday, 15th May, fifteen Year 10, 11, and 12 girls participated in a 4 hour SALT Workshop. Working alongside experienced tradeswomen, the girls had the opportunity to build a timber cutlery caddy using measuring tools, cordless drills, hand-saws, hammers, jig saws, drop saw and different fixings. Importantly, the workshop also provided information and resources in relation to decision-making and pathways into non- traditional careers for women and girls.

SALT is a non-profit incorporated organisation which began in 2009 to provide a support network for tradeswomen, apprentices and women who wish to enter the trades.

10 A Work Experience 10 A students thoroughly enjoyed their work experience earlier this term, as seen in these photos….. Feedback from work placement supervisors was extremely positive . Congratulations to 10A for making such a positive impact whilst out in the local community.

Senior School TIS Workshop Last week our Senior School students attended the ‘Tertiary Information Session’ Workshop. This workshop provided students with information regarding the VTAC application process, pathways once VCE is completed, key dates for 2014 and scholarships. Students then liaised with representatives from all major Victorian Universities, TAFE and Private Training Providers, finding out about the courses and facilities on offer at each campus.

Feedback from the students was that this session was extremely valuable in their preparations for further study and beyond.

Year 12 , Year 11 and VCAL Career Action Plans (CAPS) The Careers team is presently working with all Senior School students to ensure that they have completed their Career Action Plans – formerly known as Managed Individual Pathways Plans (MIPS), by the end of Term Two. The purpose of CAPS are to help students focus on their goals, and plans for the future. Each student spends time in the Careers Office putting together information on their interests, employment and volunteer experiences. The ‘My Future’ component ensures that students have the time to explore career options, and identify the training and work experience required to enable them to move towards their career goals. 10 B Students – Work Experience Monday May 26th – Friday May 30th Students in 10B are embarking on their work experience placements next week. Students will be participating in a number of different industries, including veterinary, hospitality, ICT, science and automotive. We are sure they will have an enjoyable time, as well as the opportunity to develop employability skills and use what they learn to prepare them for their senior school subject selections.

Year 7 Girls Badminton Angela Andriessen, Elanah Battistin, Emma Boyd, Amber Gutterson, Emma Hogan, Hannah Johnstone, Contessa Lazaro, Lillian Moon & Amelia Tennant-Andrews Two Year 7 Badminton Teams went to Euroa SC to compete against other schools. Both team A and B won their way to the semi finals, only to play each other. Team A won by 3 points overall, which put them in the grand final against Euroa Secondary College. Again a narrow win to secure the flag and a chance to play in the next round of sports. Stay tuned to find out when this is. Well done to all of the girls on their fine performance, great sportsmanship and finesse on the court. Coach Mrs Trish Bulluss
