Fairer FundingOn education funding, the Conservatives said in their manifesto that
they will maintain the amount of money that follows each child into school. This means that school funding will increase in line with pupil numbers, but not in line with inflation or cost pressures.
ASCL will continue to argue for pay, pension and national insurance increases to be fully funded by government. However, the likely reality is that schools and colleges will need to prepare for real-term cuts in their budgets – the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) calculated that this could mean schools face cuts of up to 12 per cent over the five years of parliament. ASCL will support schools and colleges with strategic financial planning advice, guidance and professional development.
The Conservatives also committed to the principle of a National Fair Funding Formula. ASCL will work with the government to deliver this. We believe that this should be decided early in the term of office and implemented over a period of three years. Without this, there are schools that will go to the wall.

Vulnerable Children and Safeguarding• Essex brought in to support Somerset out of serious
weaknesses• Key Issues (9 of them – school issues in red) 1) Leadership (new permanent DCS but SW leadership ongoing), 2) Not enough Social Workers (£6millions now found to fund 100 more for 3 years)3) Social Work Management4) Safeguarding quality across all agencies5) Identification of children most at risk6) Safety of children going missing7) Embedding Early Help (getset)8) Increase local care provision9) Improve permanence of placements for those in care

Vulnerable Children and SafeguardingKey Actions
1. Getting a single agreed document across health, education, CSC on ‘when to hold; when to refer; what to chase’
2. Retraining Safeguarding leads and then all staff so all agencies are better at holding, getting advice, referring on… we HAVE to engage with this as schools
3. SALT and CLPs are key in this – unless you tell me otherwise….Re: Safeguarding training and then dissemination of a pretty subtle shift in expectationsRe: `Better co-ordination/effectiveness of Early Help – sharing of information, building capacity at this level and within schools – sharing information across organisations.RE: consensual culture in working with familiesOFSTED concerns about Somerset schools being trained by an inadequate provider – Julian Wooster has been asked to follow this up with OFSTED.
