WELCOME TO THE 2018 NATIONAL MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL

Rachel Stephen-Smith ACT Minister for Multicultural Affairs

After 22 years, the National Multicultural Festival continues to be a landmark event in the Canberra calendar, and one that we all are rightly proud of. From humble beginnings as a local community event, the National Multicultural Festival is now Australia’s premier celebration of the richness of our multicultural society.

In 2018 the ACT Government invites you to share in the wonder of the Festival all over again.

There is no doubt about the importance of food at the Festival. In a first, celebrity chef Poh Ling Yeow will cook up a storm in two sessions on Saturday. And many of the favourite Festival food that we know and love will be available at more than 240 stalls.

For those of you who want music, pop legend Leo Sayer, Indigenous rapper Baker Boy and Canberra’s Lucy Sugerman will share seven stages with musicians, dancers and singers from far and wide. Showcases this year include Chinese New Year, US Showcase, Pacific Island Showcase, African Village, Bellydance Showcase, ASEAN Village, India in the City, Indigenous Showcase, Greek Glendi, the Latin Quarter, Celtic Tattoo and more. On Saturday, the exciting Festival Parade will start from Glebe Park and wind its way into the heart of the city, displaying the vibrancy of the incredible performers and their cultures.

To keep up to date on stage and showcase performance times and locations and to find where your favourite food stall is, make sure you download the National Multicultural Festival app. The app is now available from the Apple App Store and via Google Play for Android users.

It’s great to see the Festival continue to evolve, innovate and provide new experiences for our community. This year, the Sanctuary will offer adults a peaceful, shaded area, allowing you to grab a cool drink and enjoy a quieter moment away from the hustle and bustle of the festival thoroughfare. For kids, the Children’s Sanctuary will provide a space for families to play, create and take part in a range of cultural activities, including storytelling sessions in a range of languages. Kids at the Children’s Sanctuary can even join chef Poh on Saturday afternoon to cook up a storm together!

Of course, the Festival wouldn’t take place without the support of Canberra’s multicultural communities. The time and effort they put into organising cultural displays, rehearsing performances, preparing and cooking food, and sharing their stories and their history is amazing. It’s a privilege to be part of a truly diverse community and it’s great to see the pride people have in sharing their unique cultural heritage, whether that be through language, music, food or drink, with the broader community.

I hope you enjoy the 22nd National Multicultural Festival!

FOOD, FUN, FAMILY AND FRIENDS — THREE DAYS OF FESTIVAL MAGICWelcome to your 2018 National Multicultural Festival official guide — your essential roadmap to all the fun and festivities of this year’s extravaganza, which will unfold in Civic from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 February.

As always in the festival’s 22-year history, entry to Canberra’s favourite fun, family celebration of cultural diversity is free. Yes, FREE!

From kick-off at 4pm on February 16 right up to closing at 6pm on February 18, we will entertain you (during our opening hours) across seven stages.

Each stage will feature a jam-packed program of local, national and international performing artists including dancers, singers, bands and other culturally diverse creative types.

While there are small costs associated with buying food and drink at stalls located across the festival footprint over the three days, most aspects of the event are generally free and open to everyone.

This includes entry and access to the opening concert on Friday February 16 featuring international pop icon Leo Sayer, who has sold more than 18 million albums, had 29 worldwide top-10 hits, 10 global number ones and is a Grammy Award winner.

It’s going to be a fun night with Leo sure to make you feel like dancing.

In addition to your dancing shoes, make sure to bring your appetite as throughout the weekend a glorious array of food from across the globe will be available to tempt your tastebuds.

DO YOU FEEL LIKE DANCING? EATING? MEETING FRIENDS?

Local star of The Voice, Lucy Sugerman.

Acclaimed cook and artist, Poh Ling Yeow.

All this and more awaits you at the 2018 National Multicultural Festival. We have three days of jam-packed fun, food, family entertainment and cultural diversity to explore and enjoy.

Garema Place, Civic Square, City Walk, Petrie Plaza and surrounding streets will be home to hundreds of stalls operating throughout the three days of the festival ensuring you’ll never go hungry — or be stumped for choice.

At this year’s event almost every region on earth will be represented, from Europe and the Middle East, to Asia and the Americas.

That means festival-goers will be able to chow down on a wide variety of delicious food such as pierogis from Poland, paella from Spain, green curry from Thailand, Dutch pancakes, Ethiopian lentils, Greek souvlaki, French cheeses  and crepes, Italian biscotti, Vietnamese noodles and German sausages, to name but a few.

The National Multicultural Festival continues to improve and implement strategies to ensure the comfort of all festival-goers over the weekend of the event.

During the 2018 festival, we will have two sanctuaries — one specifically for children and parents (detailed information is on page 15 of this booklet) and the other a place for all those who would like to rest, recover and recharge from the excitement of main festival activities. The sanctuaries will provide a quiet space in which to retreat and enjoy the festival with both offering engaging and entertaining programs with performances and activities.

The Children’s Sanctuary will be located in Canberra Museum and Gallery (Saturday and Sunday) and Civic Library (Saturday only) in Civic Square while the other general sanctuary will be in Petrie Plaza. To ensure everyone is well hydrated and to help beat the heat, we have partnered with ACTsmart to install cold water stations and bubblers across the festival footprint. Bring along your recyclable water bottles to refill throughout the weekend.

Winner of the 2017 National Indigenous Music Awards best independent, unsigned Indigenous artist, Baker Boy.

TAKE A BREATHER IN OUR SANCTUARIES

While the festival is an outdoor event, for the enjoyment of all festival attendees the footprint is again a smoke-free zone (except, of course, for barbecuing meat and other delights). Smokers are encouraged to light up away from the footprint as we would like them, and all festival attendees, to have a great, healthy and comfortable time in 2018.
