PATERNEL A Chamber Opera by Frank Nuyts and Philippe Blasband, presented by Daan Bauwens – director Music Centre De Bijloke

Paternel is the story of the unmaking of a family: it questions what remains of the concept of ‘family’, once the founding father is dead. Not once the names of the protagonists are mentioned, but the libretto by Blasband gives them all a fully developed background. the opera is a kind of contemporary mourning ritual (‘death’ in Western society is only dealt with sideways – which leaves the authors room for humour) and a close examination of how off-springs handle their common, though biased history. All characters on stage are females: three sisters and a nurse. the opera describes the discovery of their father’s carnality by introducing the story of the nurse, who might or might not be his last lover, gradually becoming a kind of angel of death. Her confessions, faked or not, become a kind of death-knell for the idea of an intimately shared family-history. the composer opted for a post-tonal idiom, defined by the ‘female’ enchanting sounds of the three harps in the ensemble.

BL!NdmANEric sleichim’s contemporary music ensemble Bl!NDMAN is not just another saxophone quartet, but the name of a lab that houses a continual working process since 1988.In 1988 Eric sleichim founded Bl!NDMAN, a saxophone quartet with a traditional line-up, which develops new performance techniques and substantially expands the repertoire for the instrument by continually exploring the boundaries with other disciplines and early music. In 2008 Bl!NDMAN became a collective in which the 20 years of stage experience accumulated by the original quartet – Bl!NDMAN [sax] – is shared with three young quartets: Bl!NDMAN [drums], Bl!NDMAN [vox] and Bl!NDMAN [strings]. A collective composed entirely of quartets: unique in the music world.Four quartets, two generations, countless possibilities for ‘unheard of’ cross- fertilisation. A highly individual reper-toire of old and new.

As always, Bl!NDMAN embraces other artistic disciplines, delights the eye, questions the ear and considers experiment of paramount importance. In 2013 Bl!NDMAN celebrated its 25th anniversary with the release of the new CD 32 Foot / the organ of Bach.

ClusterCluster is a platform for new music from Belgium, the collaboration of four musicians and self-taught composers who follow their own path -even when they have been trained in jazz, world music, classical music and/or improvisation. through Cluster geert Waegeman, Joris Vanvinckenroye,Wouter Vandenabeele and Arne Van Dongen want to share ideas and look for new challenges.

Geert Waegeman is multi-instrumen-talist, composer and producer. In the nineties he was the heart of the influential experimental band ‘Cro Magnon’. He worked with percussionist Pavel Fajt and singer Anna Homler and performs (and made recordings) with many groups.

Joris Vanvinckenroye is composer and plays the double bass. He was one of the brothers of ‘Troissoeur’, and with his group ‘Aranis’ he mainly performs the work of Belgian composers. ‘BasTa’ is his solo program on the double bass.

Wouter Vandenabeele is violinist, composer and arranger at the crossroads of classical music, jazz and folk/world music. He arranged and conducted a ‘Manos Hadjidakis’ project at the olympic games 2004 in Athens, he regularly collaborates with African musicians, and is the leader of groups like olla Vogala, gFVP, and his own quartets.

Arne Van Dongen is composer and plays the double bass. He writes music for tV and film, works with choreo-grapher Ann Van den Broeck and performs his own music with the ‘arneTrio’. He also was involved in a Woody guthrie program for kids.

the four of them are exemplary of a new breed of composers who benefit from their different experiences to combine the best of many music styles. the free dom found in improvisation or jazz, the skills of classical music, the emotional intelligence of folk/world music, the humour of comedy and the energy of the rock band, it all comes together in today’s music. Cluster is set up to further pave the way.

Het Collectief Chamber music QuintetTradition and creation, discovery and recognition do not have to exclude each other. This kind of stubbornness is a quality and the trademark of Het Collectief Chamber Music Quintet.

Working consistently from a solid core of five musicians, this group has created an intriguing and idiosyncratic sound, achieved by an unfamiliar mix of strings, wind instruments and piano. For its repertoire, Het Collectief returns to the second Viennese school, the roots of modernism. starting from this solid basis, it explores important twentieth century repertoire, including the very latest experimental trends.the group also creates furore with daring crossovers between contemporary and traditional compositions and with adaptations of ancient music.

the group’s affinity with innovative 20th century music has been widely recogni-zed by the international music press, as can be seen from the many laudatory

reviews that greeted the release of several CDs with works by schoenberg, Bach, Messiaen, Chong, Vanhecke and ‘12x12, A Musical Zodiac’.

In 2013-2014, two new CD releases appear: first a portrait of the young composer Bram Van Camp, with liesbeth Devos, soprano and Vykintas Baltakas, conductor (release November 2013 - Fuga libera). the second CD focuses on ‘Sieben frühe Lieder’ (Berg), ‘Maeterlinck Lieder’ (Zemlinsky) & other work, with Katrien Baerts, soprano and reinbert De leeuw, conductor (release september 2014 - Zig Zag territoires).

Next to the many concert platforms in Belgium, Het Collectief regularly brings its productions to concert venues in Europe, south America or Asia. In 2012-2013 Het Collectief gave concerts at BoZAr Brussels and at Concertge-bouw Amsterdam. In 2014 the group will be touring germany, France, UK, the Netherlands, Cyprus, and - for the 3rd time - south America (Brazil, Peru and Argentina). In 2014-2015 Het Collectief is scheduled to tour internationally with Collegium Vocale gent and lithuanian Network Ensemble.

Robert GroslotComposer robert groslot is known for his mastery of orchestral texture as well as his distinctively coloured and rhythmical challenging writing. His work catalogue includes both major orchestral pieces and chamber music.

robert groslot is a curious, passionate and eager witness of his time. He often finds inspiration in other art forms, especially poetry and painting. Important works are rainfall on Pink City, Black Venus, the great globe, si le Monde… and a series of sixteen Concertos for solo instruments and orchestra.

Upon two of his orchestral works robert groslot also created art movies: the great globe, which was screened at HDFest 2006 in los Angeles, and si le Monde… this second film was broadcasted hundreds of times by Belgian culture channels Exqi and Cultuur 7.

robert groslot started his career as a pianist. After winning the Alessandro Casagrande Competition in 1974 (terni) and becoming laureate of the Queen Elisabeth Competition for Piano (Brussels, 1978), he undertook concert trips across 4 continents through more than 20 countries and made many studio, radio and television recordings. As the founder and conductor of Il Novecento he collaborated with top soloists both from the classical scene and the pop scene. In recent years, composing has become his main activity.

“Like Gustav Mahler, Groslot can take a rather commonplace motive and turn it into a compelling subject.” leon bly, wasbe world, december 2013.

daniel GazonBorn in Belgium in 1955, Daniel gazon started his conducting studies in 1978 with Igor Markevitch and Max Deutsch. After graduating from the International seminar in Weimar and from the Mozarteum in salzburg, he was invited by seiji oZAWA to study at the Berkshire Music Center in tanglewood where he worked with seiji ozawa, Kurt Masur and Joseph silverstein.

His most influential experience was with sergiu Celibidache with whom he studied musical phenomenology and conducting from 1986 to 1989.

Daniel gazon has a vast symphonic and operatic repertoire, and is widely recognised as one of the foremost specialists in 20th century repertoire. He has premiered works by l. de Pablo, lindberg, Vivier, tiensuu, Nuyts, Van Hove, Buckinx, Kutavicius, Balakauskas, Martinaityte, Narbutaité, Francesconi, Fafchamps, Deleuze, Knittel, Benes, Zielinska, Zagar, gessler, Nathan and many others.

He has been a guest at the IsCM, Melos-Ethos, Ars Musica, Düsseldorf Kontrapunkt, gaida and Warsaw Autumn international festivals.

He is equally sought-after as a teacher, and for many years has given master-classes in conducting (based on the phenomenological approach developped by s. Celibidache) and also worked intensively with youth orchestras in Belgium, slovakia, sweden, Italy and Vietnam. He teaches conducting at the royal Conservatory of Mons, (Belgium) which is therefore one of the few institution in the Academic field where the technique and the spirit of the late sergiu Celibidache is transmitted.

Les muffattiBrussels Baroque Orchestra

Indeed, I have other concerns than to incite the bother of arms or to engage the god Mars in combat. My profession is far removed from the bluster of arms, and the reasons of state that call on them.

georg Muffat (1653-1704) is the author of these bold comments that he published in 1695, in a Western Europe in the throes of the Nine Years War. He argued in favour of music for encouraging peace, offering a gentle alternative to war. His pioneering position in the birth of the orchestra as an institution prompted the Muffatti to use the composer’s name as the source of their own and recognize him as a spiritual father.

tirelessly, and with as much integrity as they can muster, the Muffatti are active in spreading models of universal beauty, creating moments of timeless contempla-tion and, most of all, promoting slow food music. this process involves carrying out extensive studies, carefully choosing instruments and finding a sufficiently large rehearsal area so that

in concert the pleasure of playing can be shared and felt spontaneously.

the initiative taken in 1996 by young idealists from the Brussels Conservatory got a further professional boost in 2004 when Peter Van Heyghen took over the role as conductor. since then, the orchestra has risen to an international level, receiving the trust of the foremost Belgian and European concert organisers while their recordings are enthusiasti-cally praised by international critics.

two months after its release, our last recording of reinhard Keiser’s Brockes-Passion, realized in collaboration with the vocal ensemble Vox luminis, is already being reprinted after having been acclai-med unanimously by critics throughout Europe. Peter Van Heyghen

Royal FlemishPhilharmonic A modern and stylistically flexible symphony orchestra, the royal Flemish Philharmonic demonstrates an artistic flair which allows for a variety of styles – from classical to contemporary – in a historically authentic manner. Chief Conductor Edo de Waart is responsible for the orchestra’s main repertoire. Drawing on his vast orchestral experi-ence, as former Chief Conductor of the Netherlands radio Philharmonic orchestra, san Francisco symphony and Hong Kong Philharmonic orchestra, he contributes to the unique character of the royal Flemish Philharmonic. He works in close co-operation with Principal Conductor Philippe Herreweghe, who makes use of his specific background in his readings of (pre)romantic music. Martyn Brabbins is Principal guest Conductor. Composer Wim Henderickx joined the royal Flemish Philharmonic as ‘artist in residence’ since season 2013/2014.

thanks to its own series of concerts in large venues, the royal Flemish Philharmonic occupies a unique position in Flanders. the orchestra resides in its hometown Antwerp (the new concert hall will open in Autumn 2016) and in De Bijloke Music Centre in ghent. the orchestra is a regular guest of the major international concert halls all over Europe, Japan and China. great value is attached to educational and social projects, offering children, youngsters, and people with different social back-grounds the opportunity to get acquain-ted with the symphony orchestra from close quarters.

the royal Flemish Philharmonic records for PHI, Pentatone, BIs, Hyperion, Fuga libera and EPr. In 2011 it started its own label, focusing on the main orchestral repertoire, Belgian composers and contemporary music.

Evil Penguin Productions the beginning of the 21st century will go down in history as the era in which the internet and its associated image and sound culture reset our traditional audio attitudes.

Youtube is the main forum for young people to discover new music, but few classical outfits have found their way to it. Evil Penguin Productions does not believe in the classical market’s typical answer to any media revolution (paralysis and protectionism), but neither does it seek to imitate the video satiation which is pop industry’s answer to the crisis on the CD market.

EPP firmly believes that the truth lies in the middle between these extremes, but it believes even more firmly that a key condition for the video promotion of classical music is good content. (New) lovers are hungry for background, for information on the music, its creator, its performer(s). Never before so much information was available, but finding one’s way in this torrent is not a simple matter. Not for the (increasingly

demanding) consumer, let alone for any producer.

EPP is convinced that aesthetically pleasing and dynamically wrapped background information can help listeners to cross the threshold of “serious” music. As a consequence, Evil Penguin Productions devotes its energy and expertise to bringing classical content – be it a concert, a documentary, an artist’s portrait – on the screen. It is currently supplying Cultuur 7 (a Belgian broadcaster specializing in cultural content) with four one hour programs per month (dedicated to young classical and jazz performers).

Its sister company is record label EPr-Classic, that includes artists like Pieter Wispelwey, Dietrich Henschel, Flemish radio Choir & Hervé Niquet, … .

Recent productions:Pieter Wispelwey 392, Beren gieren, Hamster Axis, Winterreise met tom Beghin en Jan van Elsacker, Beethoven rediscovered ….

AvanticlassicAvanticlassic is a new label created with the aim of producing outstanding, unique, quality recordings made by promising new musicians, as well as established artists like roby lakatos, sergio tiempo, Philippe Quint, Polina leschenko or Martha Argerich.

In order to achieve this, avanticlassic offers the best available technology to its artists on all levels, be it in the choice of recording studios, the recording techniques used or the support offered.

the choice of work and the relationship between the work and the artist is what differentiates avanticlassic. By working closely with the artist in determining which works are recorded, we hope to reveal an intimacy – between the artist and the work – rarely found elsewhere.

the product offered to consumers is also of the highest quality: cd/sacd hybrid (5.1. DsD system) music carriers, packaged attractively in a contemporary, fresh, modern style, with liner notes written by specialists and cd-covers featuring images produced by accom-plished artists.

Avanticlassic aims not only to record and promote artists in which it believes but also to offer them real support in all facets of their career.

Lavial lavial is an independent distribution company created in 1980. since 2013, it is the oldest independent classical music distribution company based in Belgium. our repertoire includes Early and Classical music as well as Contemporary, Jazz and World music.

the company has a good sales network and very good relationships with radio and specialized music magazines. We consider it important to build up relationships of trust with all the players in the industry, from suppliers to customers.

lavial is active in the Benelux, and is currently looking for new and important labels to be distributed in that territory. We already distribute reputable labels such as Hyperion, Helios, gimell, APr & signum (only in Belgium & luxemburg) as well as others such as orfeo, Dynamic, stradivarius, Nibiru, Etcetera, Profil Hänssler, Divox, Nimbus, Hallé, Kairos, NMC, Dux, tacet, Concerto, Farao, gramola, Hortus and New World records (in the Benelux).

La Boite à musiquePavane Records / Musica Ficta

Pavane is one of the most dynamic independent labels devoted exclusively to classical music.

Nearly 250 recordings have been published on compact disc. Many collaborations take place between the label and its artists who have found an ideal and trusted partner with Pavane for the realisation of the recording projects that they held dear.

the rediscovery of Belgian composers also figures in the editorial priorities of Pavane, which recently published the first world-wide complete recording of the piano music of Joseph Jongen, as well as his string quartets.

For 20 years, Bertrand de Wouters d’oplinter has held the reins of the label, where one finds confirmed values as well as a new generation of artists.

resolutely turned towards the future, Pavane is developing many new projects, notably a new series concentrating on Early and Baroque music (www.musica-ficta.com).

In a market which, more than ever, demands creativity, flexibility and high standards, Pavane thus succeeds in combining tradition and an opening toward the future.

musique en WallonieMusique en Wallonie is a project that promotes the musical heritage and com-posers from the Federation of Wallonia-Brussels. As a non-profit orga nization, it brings together musicologists and researchers. Far from hiding behind a commercial logic, MEW seeks above all to marry a policy of scientific research, publishing and music distribution. For centuries, our region has been a geographic and cultural meeting point for artists from all over, who fertilized an art which is not a copy of their own origins, but a new synthesis, very personal and with many influences.our catalogue is physically distributed in more than 25 countries across 5 continents and digitally worldwide. It is also an invitation to time travel. From the Middle Ages, represented by the manuscript Vari 42 copied in the abbey of saint-Jacques in liège in the 13th century, through the renaissance (la rue, Binchois, lassus, regis, tinctoris), baroque (Du Mont, Fiocco, Danielis, saint-luc) and classical era (renotte and Boutmy). then through the revolution – with gossec and grétry – the romanti-cism and the “fin de siècle” illustrated

by Franck, lekeu, Vieuxtemps, Ysaÿe, to finally open in the 20th century with Jongen, Biarent or Absil.First-rate artists and ensembles lent their talents to this project: D. Cornil, l. Festival de WallonieA Festival for all, with something for everybody

Every year, from June to october, the Festival de Wallonie presents more than 150 concerts all over Wallonia and in Brussels.the Festival presents its concerts in a festive context, inviting audiences to discover the talents of today an tomor-row in the prestigious settings of the most beautiful locations and monuments of our heritage, right into the remotest corners of Wallonia.

2014 : EASTWARD HO! Down the DanubeFor its forty-fourth edition, the Festival of Wallonia has booked a genuine cruise, with a programme that will sail through periods and styles. our musical journey will take us from Vienna to the Danube Delta to discover the musical works and composers of the Eastern European countries through which the Danube flows. Along the way, we shall anchor in a whole host of places that allude to their deeply rooted musical traditions.

this rich theme will be illustrated by many concerts, as well as the overarching projects devoted to the guest of honour, Fabrizio Cassol, to families (with the children’s opera ‘Brundibár’), and to the saxophone, in this bicentennial year of Adolphe sax’s birth.

Fabrizio Cassol, guest of honourthe festival has chosen Fabrizio Cassol as its guest of honour in 2014. given that this is the year that Belgium celebrates the bicentenary of the birth of the saxophone’s inventor, Adolphe sax, it seemed fitting to work with a marvellous saxophonist of many facets. Whilst he is known above all as the saxophonist and composer for Aka Moon, he has also composed music for contemporary music projects, dance, theatre, hip-hop, and films. Eight concerts – from liège to Hainaut Province, with Brussels and other places in Wallonia in between – will be devoted to his works.
