Almost half of all these trips were to Australia (1.13 million), which has seen no signs of slowing in popular- ity, with 55,900 (or 5.2%) more Kiwis heading there in the year to Sep. The States also saw continued growth, up 22,200 (14.2%); departures to Fiji increased 17,800 (14.2%); and Indo- nesia grew 6600 (or 19.7%). Other notable increases in the last 12 months includes China (up 5500 or 7.1%); Thailand (4120 or 10.5%); India (4840 or 11.7%); Japan (3860 or 15.7%); and Samoa (3580 or 7.4%. Big Dreams For MEL Melbourne Airport’s new boss Lyell Strambi has told reporters it will push for the continuation of curfew-free operations, more access rights for international carriers and a rail link to the airport —which the state government has taken off its agenda. Strambi told Sydney Morning Herald all elements of the airport experience needed to be attractive to passengers, including transport to and from.

Meet Jonno. He’s a young ‘millen-nial’ traveller who likes to live like a local. Based on our Traveller Tribes 2030 report, I describe him as a Cultural Purist.

An interesting trait of Cultural Purists is that they don’t want vast amounts of data used to personalise services. In fact, they perceive personalisation of services and advertisements as roadblocks to true discovery. That is something the travel industry needs to watch out for!

They want authentic experiences and don’t want technology to get in the way. This may extend to the ‘old school’ approach of picking up the phone and calling hotels or service providers directly, using guide-books for inspiration or just seeing what they stumble across along their journey. Travel agents that can provide local knowledge and off the beaten track experiences are going to be in high-demand for this tribe.

Cultural Purists will want to remove any barriers between themselves and locals. So they might be heavy users of the ‘sharing economy’ such as ‘Airbnb’ and equivalent platforms. Tripadvisor scores will carry less weight than food recommendations from local Airbnb hosts.

New Zealand’s CAA has shared a bulletin from ICAO outlining its concerns around lithium batteries being carried by aircraft following tests by the Federal Aviation Ad-ministration. The tests suggest a fire involving high-density packages of lithium ion batteries ‘may exceed the capability of aircraft cargo fire protection systems’.A proposal to prohibit the trans-port of high-density packages of lithium ion batteries as cargo will be considered at the 25th meet-ing of the Dangerous Goods Panel

Battery Warningin Montreal, 19-30 Oct, says ICAO. Both Boeing and Airbus back the ban ‘until such time as safer methods of transport are implemented’.US carriers have meanwhile been urged by the FAA to tell passengers they can’t bring spare lithium batteries in their checked bags due to fire risk. The batteries pose a risk of both ignit-ing and fuelling fires in aircraft cargo and baggage compartments, says the FAA. Spare batteries in carry-on bags should be individually protected and must not come into contact with other metal objects, it adds.

Beaches, Culture, Dining: Family Fun

Increasingly competitive airfares to Honolulu are offsetting the weaker NZD-USD exchange rate as Kiwi families continue to head to the rainbow state in growing numbers, says Hawaii Tourism New Zealand manager Darragh Walshe.Wholesalers says the combination of a beach holiday, with the added at-traction of endless activities and great shopping continue to be the key draw cards for families.

. . . CoastlineThere’s a wide range of free, or nearly free activities available, across the island group—the most obvious of which are the island state’s beaches, beach parks and hiking trails. The famed stretch of sand that is Waikiki is hugely popular with tour-ists and convenient for those with

small children, but for those looking for more of a local’s experience they can venture out just 20 minutes and find pristine beaches without the crowds.

. . . Cultural OfferingFor families looking to stretch their budgets, many tourist hotels offer a wide range of increasingly authentic cultural activities—with everything from hula and ukulele lessons to free entertainment and walking tours, which are both free and informative. The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center runs a calendar of free events for all ages and the nearby Waikiki Beach Walk also offers a host of free enter-tainment.

. . . Dining OutThere’s also a huge range of dining op-tions to suit all budgets on offer in Ha-waii. From supermarkets (some with extensive deli sections offering fresh and affordable fare) and the ubiqui-tous ABC stores, there’s also a wide range of mid-range family-friendly dining options from food courts to restaurants. The US’ service-focused culture also means the waiting staff will go the extra mile to accommodate families, and entertain children—so they get a good tip.

LikeHawaii Tourism NZ

Paul Hana (Or Happy Hour) For FamiliesKiwi families can also take advantage of the many Paul Hana (happy hour) deals available across the island group. Many hotels and restaurants offer discount drinks for the parents and a range of meal deals for those dining early—many representing a significant saving. One easy way to get an overview of the deals is by downloading the Pau Hana Time app, which features a list of offers across the islands covering the well-known to local dining. It’s free to download, see the App Store for details.

Shopping BargainsWhile the NZD isn’t as strong as it once was against the USD, on the shopping front there’s still plenty of ways for families to buy toys, clothes and more at a fraction of their Kiwi retail price. The Waikele outlet mall offers a great selection of stores and sav-ings. But for those travelling with younger children (who may be ‘al-lergic’ to shopping), there’s many bargains to be found at stores such as Walmart and Ross Dress For Less (both of which have stores within a five-minute walk from the back of the Ala Moana Center). Also urge clients to sign up for store loyalty programmes for instant sav-ings, and to watch the department stores for sales. It’s also worth noting that interna-tional visitors can get a 10% dis-count card at Macy’s.Agents can pre-download these on-line on behalf of their clients. For details, see visitmacysusa.com/visitor-savings-pass

Coupons GaloreUrge clients to grab a few of the many free tourist publications on offer from the airport or hotel on arrival. As well as offering a brief overview of many of the tours and activities on offer, the publications also include a slew of discount or coupon offers covering tours, activities and dining options, as well as a list of upcoming events on around the islands.

Getting AroundWhile hiring a car or driver can be cost effective for family groups, it’s still relatively easy to get around Hawaii’s main tourist areas by trolley, shuttle or bus. In the Waikiki region tourist trolleys operate for around USD2pp each way. The state’s The Bus network is also a very cost affordable option—provid-ed clients are not in a hurry. A one-way bus fare is USD2.50 for adults and USD1.25 for kids aged six-17 (under six are free)—no matter how far passengers travel in one direction. There’s buses to many tourist at-tractions such as Diamond Head, downtown Honolulu, Pearl Harbour and Waikele Outlet Mall—and as a rule both the drivers and the locals are very friendly and helpful. The only downside is the time it may take to get there. See thebus.org for details
