50th Anniversary

Last weekend the school celebrated 50 years of education. The school was open, with many

people taking the opportunity to look around at displays depicting both the history of the school,

as well as what we are currently doing. The weekend started with the raising of the original

school flag by Mr Tony Dobbin (son of Mr Fred Dobbin, the original Principal), Mrs Suzan Dickson

(original student), Mr Col Taylor (original staff member) and Mr Kevin Chown (original P&C

President). A sculpture designed by current student, Jack McGinley was also unveiled. This was

inspired by the school logo and Jack’s Metal & Engineering classmates and the TAS teachers

helped in its construction. This sculpture will stand as a reminder of the celebrations and will also

house a time capsule that will be prepared later in the year.

Saturday night saw the celebrations continue with a dinner at the Orange Function Centre. This

was an opportunity for people to catch up with former classmates and teachers and to

reminisce about the ‘good old days’. The P&C also used the occasion to recognise the

contribution made by parents to the school by awarding Life Membership to Mrs Judith Gunner,

Mr Kevin Chown and to the family of the late Mrs Alison Dutton. As these awards reminded

everyone in attendance, parents play a pivotal role in the life of our school.

A huge thank you must go to the organising committee who have worked on this celebration

weekend for the last 18 months. Without their tireless dedication and hard work the weekend

would not have been so successful.

Over the weekend the P&C and school also had merchandise on sale, which is still available.

The commemorative glasses and mugs can be purchased from the canteen, whilst school office

has the historical photobooks and pavers.

Examinations and Reports

As you receive this newsletter teachers are busily finalising Year 11 reports, which should be

issued in the week starting June 5th. Students in Years 8-10 will have examinations in Week 6. A

small number of subjects will have exams in the Hall, whilst all other assessment tasks will be

completed in class time. Junior reports should be issued before the end of this term.

Girls Academy

This week we have welcomed Belinda Langlo to the school, who has taken up the position of

Director of the Girls Academy. This academy will work with Aboriginal girls to develop and

empower them through youth leadership training, mentoring, sport and extra-curricular

programs. Belinda will be supported in the establishment of the academy by a Development

Officer, once the recruitment process is completed.

HSIE MATTERS!

We had a fantastic weekend meeting

many past students and staff during the

school tours of our rooms. We showcased

the different ways learning is done now

compared to in the past. Many visitors were

interested in the changes to the furniture

and room organisation, something we have

a focus on at the moment to best cater for

our students learning styles.

We found the responses to our room and

displays really positive, and it was fantastic to

learn about the different uses our A4 learning

space has been over time: science lab,

language room, art room, computer room

and now a HSIE classroom.

Some of the common themes were the

development of models by classes: this goes

to show that what works with students is

hands on practical activities, something we

try to incorporate as much as possible into

our classes.

Australia’s changing role in wartime

was a popular exhibit, with many

people interested in the range of

topics we can cover with our

students, such as stories of war

romances, Chinese ANZACS, and

Indigenous Service.

A big “Thank you” also goes out to our

staff. Ms Hollie McRae, Ms Kirsten Lane,

and Mr Craig Williams who all took time

to spend some of their weekend at the

A4 display. It’s their hard work and best

practice that makes these displays

possible. We all really enjoyed the huge

community involvement we had for the

tours through our room, and welcome

any visits or questions you may have.

Kirsten Hutchinson, HSIE Head Teacher

There was a lot of interest shown in our

activities that have taken place

outside of the classroom, from

fieldwork in partnership with Orange

Parliament, and connecting with

Year 10 Child Studies have been looking at

Food and Nutrition for young children. They

recently completed their assessment task

where they had to come up with a healthy

lunchbox for a child to take to family day

care. Their lunchbox needed to include

morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.

They conducted research on what a

healthy lunchbox should contain and

presented their finished healthy lunchbox

the following week.

Ms Sharp

Year 7 Technology 2 have just finished their food

technology unit, “Eat Well, Live Well”. They had to

design their own biscuit and packaging. We spent the

term researching different biscuit designs and suitable

packaging to keep their biscuits nice and fresh,

including what information needs to be on their

packaging such as a barcode and ingredient list.

They had a great time making and presenting their

finished biscuits during a practical lesson in class.

Ms Sharp

Year 8 Technology have just finished their

food technology unit, “My Restaurant

Rules”. They had to come up with their own

restaurant design, including a menu and

designer milkshake. They researched

milkshake designs, f lavours and

presentation ideas before making their

designer milkshake in class during a

practical lesson. They did a great job!

Year 12 Agriculture

Year 12 Agriculture students spent the morning a few Fridays ago at Bumble Hill Alpaca,

which is a mid-sized stud with 300 animals located 1100 metres up Mount Canobolas.

Julienne Gelber owner of Bumble Hill hosted the class for the morning. Students learnt

about the sustainable farming practices and marketing of alpaca fibre.

A big thank you Julienne for hosting Year 12.

Ms J O’Donnell Agriculture Teacher

Year 11 Chemistry

Over the past term, Year 11 Chemistry having been studying metals. In particular their

reaction with oxygen, water and acids.

Through conducting an experiment to see how different metals react with oxygen,

water and acids the students can then put the metals they tested in an order of

reactivity. From this information, students will be looking at what metals are used for in

society and how that relates to their reactivity level.

♫ MUSIC NOTES ♫

Ellena excels At the school anniversary dinner Ellena delighted guests with her

rendition of the old school song accompanied by former Canobolas

Music teacher, Donna Riles.

Ellena has been giving it all in her preparation for HSC Music 2 and

Extension Performance. During the school holidays she had a lesson

with the Head of Vocal and Opera Studies at the University of Sydney,

Dr Rowena Cowley.

She is a co-winner of the Orange Regional Conservatorium's 2017

Concerto Competition. This means she will sing the song cycle "I Hate

Music" by Leonard Bernstein (one of her HSC pieces) with the Orange

Youth Orchestra in a public concert.

Recently she attended a vocal concert and sang in a masterclass

with soprano Ayse Goknür Shanal, and pianist and vocal coach Andrea Katz. Both Ayse and

Andrea have studied and performed extensively overseas and around Australia and

were impressed with Ellena's sound.

Last Friday - Sunday Ellena competed in various vocal sections of the Cowra Eisteddfod. She

achieved great results and feedback and most notably she won the Cowra scholarship for

Under 18s.

HSC Music Workshops Some Year 12s learned handy skills and tools for the exams at the HSC Music Workshops this

week. Ellena performed I Hate Music in the HSC performance masterclass where she learned

how to make the examiners love her music.

Sydney Symphony Orchestra 26 Canobolas Music students from Years 7-12 enjoyed seeing the Sydney Symphony Orchestra

perform a concert at Orange Civic Theatre on Thursday.

STEM CENTRE NEWS

Year 7 STEM

Over the last fortnight, Year 7 STEM classes have been developing

21st Century learning skills. Collaborating in groups, students had

to creatively design, construct and test a tower made from 30

marshmallows and 30 toothpicks that stood 30cm tall and lasted

30 second on our Lego EV3 earthquake simulator. Groups that

didn't establish a strategy early on found it harder to work

together towards the common goal of a 30 cm tall tower.

Following the testing, student wrote a reflection about the

evaluation of their tower and sketched a detailed illustration of

what it looked like. They then used their numeracy skills to

calculate the cost of using marshmallows and nine other lollies for

prototype testing and communicated the results in a column

graph.

Year 9 and Year 10 iSTEM tested their prototype air-powered

rockets. Despite being tested dry (no water or fuel) one still

managed to the roof of the A Block quad!

Mr Matt Scott Head Teacher STEM

Some exciting things happening in STEM at Canobolas this term:

We have re-applied for funding to enter a team in the FIRST Robotics competition in 2018. Mr

Boardman and Mr Oakden will be leading this initiative. Our student participants will count on

your support in this competition over the next 10 months.

We have a received a wildcard entry in the 2017 Aeronautical Velocity Challenge. Mrs

Shepherd will be taking an all-girls team of Year 9 iSTEM students to compete in the state finals

at Wollongong University early next month.

As a STEM Action school, we will be hosting schools for a STEM professional learning session on

Thursday 1st June and Wednesday 28th June. We are currently working with 16 schools state

wide on this project.

I will be giving a public presentation on Wednesday 7th June at 6pm in the Orange Regional

Museum about my STEM Scholarship tour last term. If you would like to know more about what

I discovered and where Canobolas STEM is placed, please come along!

STEM will be hosting a future focussed career activity for iSTEM students in Science Week,

thanks to an Australian Science Teachers Association grant, allowing us to buy a drone!

Every year Rotary International organise a road safety education day of workshops for Year 11

students at Towac Park. This was held on the 5th of May with 30 Year 11 students attending along

with other Orange schools.

Students attended six interactive workshops over the day that ranged from practical speed and

stopping skills to hearing confronting stories from road accidents. Students are provided with a

booklet linked to each session to support their learning about driving.

The six workshops students attended were:

Road hazards and distractions – students discuss strategies to avoid distractions

while driving and how to be a good passenger.

Speed & Stopping – an interactive workshop were a driving instructors use cars to

show the impact of stopping distance when travelling at different speeds

Road Choices – a workshop run by Police/Paramedics that involves road rules,

demerit points/fines and real life examples that the instructor has experienced.

Genevieve’s Story – a confronting story around a particular road accident that

resulted in a death and how that impacted on the victim’s family.

After the crash – an inspirational speaker session from a victim of a crash resulting in

a serious head injury.

The ‘I’ in Drive – a workshop that looks at student’s self-control and risk awareness

when driving.

Year 11 would like to thank RYDA and Rotary for the opportunity to attend these workshops.

Congratulations to Jack Connors, winning a

Bronze Medal in the Heptathlon at the 2017

INAS Athletics Championships in Bangkok.

Jack also won his 1500m event against a

strong international field. A massive

congratulations to Jack who has worked

hard at his athletics to develop the skills in all

the events of the Heptathlon.

Open Boys Basketball – Threepeat (of a kind)

The Open Boys Basketball have successfully made the CHS Final 8 Basketball Tournament for the third

consecutive year.

A very slow and nervous start from both sides indicated the importance of the Round of 16 game against

Deniliquin High.

Deniliquin led the scoring for the first five minutes, until Lachlan Baker decided to go to work, scoring five of

Canobolas’ first 10 points. A superb steal and behind the back full court pass from Ben Zegzula to a Matt

Gray dunk set the tone for the rest of the quarter – Canobolas finishing the first break with a 24-12 lead.

Canobolas upped the tempo defensively in the second quarter, allowing for multiple fast break

opportunities. Our big men, Harry Betts and Matt dominated inside, combining for 20 of our 27 points for

the quarter. Jayden Baker, despite only being in Year 8, displayed tenacious defence, with some

awesome steals and blocked shots. Jayden Zegzula finished the quarter with a buzzer beater three pointer

giving Canobolas a 51-24 lead.

A change in defence from Deniliquin rattled the Canobolas guards allowing Deniliquin to stay level with

Canobolas for the quarter until Ben Zegzula was determined not to be out done by younger brother

Jayden, and hit his own three point shot on the buzzer.

Going into the final quarter with a 70-40 lead, Canobolas slowed their scoring down, using the rest of the

game to run through their offensive structure. Great leadership from James Gogala and Owen Burgess

ensured that this worked well. Matt finished the game with a massive 50 points in the 90-56 victory.

The student supporters that came to watch, really lifted the team’s confidence, and displayed great

sportsmanship for the entire game.

The team heads to Terrigal on the 14 and 15 June to contest the Final 8 Tournament.

Carmen Dederer Coach

The sport dance groups have been working each week towards the eisteddfods in

Term 3. This year we are planning on taking Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 to Wellington, Bathurst

and Orange eisteddfods. Years 7 and 10 have finished their dances and are going to be

polishing their movements and working on their formations and timing. Years 8 and 9 are

almost finished their dances, which they will then need to go through and polish.

All students in our sport dance groups are expected

to be cooperative with one another, dancing to the

best of their ability, willing to improve their dance skills,

and be committed to the dance and the group.

Congratulations to our CHPA Dance group who have just been accepted into the

Western Dance Festival in Bathurst! The group will be performing on the 7th of June with

other Western Region public schools. They have been rehearsing bright and early

before class time and will continue to work hard leading up to the festival. Great job

girls! Next year we will work towards getting some of our sport dance groups into the

festival as well.

On Wednesday the 3rd, the Year 9 and 10 boys and girls touch teams headed to Bathurst to play in the

Western Region All Schools Competition, in the hopes of progressing to the state finals. The boys played

against some very tough competition and came away with a win against Kandos and close losses to

Oberon, Orange and Cowra High Schools. The boys progressively improved throughout the day and

began to put together a great display of play against Orange High and were unlucky to go down by

two tries. Callan Naden scored the try of the day with an elevated dive into the right hand corner

against Cowra High.

State finals here we come……….

The girls had an extremely successful day getting wins against Oberon (4-1), Kandos (5-2), and Cowra

High School (5-3). During the rounds the girls went down to a strong Orange High side 4-1, but met

them again in the finals to redeem the earlier loss. The final was close with Orange High leading

throughout the game. With 5 minutes to go and the score tied at three all, Erin Naden produced a

phenomenal intercept to run half the field and score. With the girls leading by one and only a minute

left on the clock, Sharone Moore was able to capitalise on a defensive error to sweeten the win with

another try. The girls now progress to the state finals at Parramatta that will be played later on this

month. Best of luck to the girls!

The Girri Girri Academy were lucky enough to have Macquarie Medi Spa come in to talk to the

girls about skin care, hygiene, makeup and healthy eating last Wednesday. The girls were

treated to an afternoon of fruit and cheese platters, hands on makeup demonstrations and

nail painting. Each of the girls received a showbag full of goodies and information. A big

thankyou to Karla and Taylor from the Medi spa. We hope to have you in again soon.
