ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS VISIT

Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is a ‘member-based, community organisation that creates

social value through engineering.’ They work on improving a number of areas around the world

such as; Clean Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Appropriate Housing, Clean Energy, and Digital

Access.

Some of the EWB were university students from UTS and some were qualified engineers. They ran

a number of activities to challenge our students to come up and present actual solutions. The

activities were housing solutions for flood prone areas; prosthetics; and power generation.

Principal’s Desk Dear Parents and Members of the School Community

Welcome back to Term 3. I am looking forward to another action packed term, full of exciting

events for all of our school community.

STAFF CHANGES

The second half of 2017 will see some staff changes within the school.

Mrs Elicia Yates has also been successful through a merit selection process in gaining the Head

Teacher Mathematics position at Cowra High School. Mrs Yates will commence this position at

the start of Term 4, after her Year 12 students have started their HSC exams.

Mr Nic Williams has also been successful through a merit selection process in gaining the Deputy

Principal position at Denison College Bathurst Campus. Mr Williams will take up this new position

at the start of Week 7 this term. We wish both Mrs Yates and Mr Williams all the best for their

future endeavours. An expression of interest process will be conducted within the school to fill

both of these positions.

When I wrote to you at the end of last term I indicated Mr Matt Scott would relieve as Deputy

Principal Quality Teaching for the remainder of this year. Since then his position of Head Teacher

Innovation has been filled by Ms Kathy McIntosh. Kathy comes to us from Erina High School and

we look forward to having her at our school for the next six months.

We also welcomed Ms Laura Arman to the Mathematics Faculty. Ms Arman comes to us from

Orange High School and she is a welcome addition to the school.

GIRLS ACADEMY

I am very pleased to announce that the school has established a relationship with Role Models

and Leaders Australia to establish a program to support Aboriginal girls within the school. Belinda

Langlo and Nikita Mason have been employed to run this program and are currently busy

getting organised. This academy will work in conjunction with existing programs in the school.

YEAR 12 TRIAL EXAMS

Year 12 students’ preparation for the HSC Trial HSC Examination should be well underway. These

exams will be held in Weeks 4 and 5 of this term and are an opportunity for students to practice

HSC style questions. Students should continue to take advantage of the opportunities teachers

give them for revision, particularly on Thursday afternoons in the STEM Centre. The more

preparation students can do, the more confident they will be when they attempt these exams.

SCHOOL FINANCE

Early in September the school will be implementing the new finance system of the Department

of Education. The date of the launch of this in 4th September and impacts on most schools in

the Lithgow, Bathurst, Orange and Cowra areas. By now all families should have received a

letter about the impact that this will have on our school operations. The school will not be able

to receive any payments (cash, EFTPOS, online payments) from 29/8/17 to 7/9/17. Families will

also receive an account in the mail shortly for any outstanding fees. We would appreciate you

paying these at your earliest convenience to assist us in making the transition. The weeks

around the launch date have also been blocked out and no excursions will be planned during

this time. There are some events that are not able to be rescheduled, and in these cases infor-

mation will be sent home early to families and payments will be required earlier than normal. If

students are not able to return notes and payments by these deadlines then they will unfortu-

nately not be able to participate. We appreciate your understanding in this process.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

As a school community we have a long standing tradition of being a uniform wearing school.

As the weather cools down the number of students who are out of uniform can start to rise. Our

school uniform provides a large number of options to ensure that students are warm through

the cooler months. If you need assistance with uniform please do not hesitate to contact me at

the school.

SCIENCE FACULTY NEWS

Year 8 have been constructing circuits. There are

two types of circuits that can be constructed —

parallel and series circuits.

Year 10 have been studying the refraction of light

particles/wave. Light refracts when it travels through

one medium into another. This is the result of each

medium having a specific refractive index.

DEBATING

Mayor’s Cup Schools Debating

Competition

Next Thursday, our senior debating team

(Victoria Ruming, Kane Mitchell, Harry Betts

and Kelson Freedman) will be competing

in the Mayor’s Cup Schools Debating

Competition. Canobolas won the Mayor’s

Cup last year and we wish our team all the

best as they defend the title.

Well done to our Year 9/10 debating team, consisting of Tanaya Pickering, Danielle Kiel, Kimberly

Kiel and Justin Alexander, who competed against Orange High School on Tuesday afternoon.

They were on the negative team for the topic, “We should ban drinking at public events like

festivals and sporting events.” While all students spoke very well for their first debate, they were

unfortunately unsuccessful this time around.

AUTHOR VISITS

Tristan Bancks

Children’s and teen author, Tristan Bancks, visited the school at the end of Term 2. Tristan Bancks

has written a number of books, including Two Wolves and most recently, The Fall. He also has a

background in film-making and acting. Tristan spoke to interested students in Years 7-10 about

his writing and stories. The students found his talk extremely interesting and asked several

questions about how to improve their own writing.

Fleur Ferris

We were very fortunate to have Fleur Ferris visit our school this week. She spoke to interested

students in Years 9-11 about her books, Risk, Black and her new novel, Wreck. Fleur Ferris worked

as a police officer and a paramedic for a number of years, roles which provided experiences

and insight to inform her stories.

UPCOMING

Zohab Zee Khan – August 16

In Week 5, students will have a unique opportunity to engage in a workshop with Australian

Poetry Slam Champion, Zohab Zee Khan. This will be a fantastic opportunity for students to work

closely with an incredibly talented performer and poet, allowing insight into the power of words

in communicating meaning.

CHPA athletes participated in a workshop

presented by Orange Headspace. The

athletes talked about a variety of stresses

and self caring strategies to deal with

stress. They also investigated into the

different types of bullies and bullying. They

were shown visually how hard it is to

juggle everything in life and how

sometimes something just has to give.

Headspace provided us with lots of handy

information and access to help in lots of

ways when we need it...Headspace is the

place to go with careers and work help

also!!!

On Tuesday 23rd July, 17 girls participated in the

annual Marianne Murphy Cup. The cup is a netball

competition for 14’s 16’s and Opens, between all high

school throughout Orange. Canobolas High School

participated in the 14’s and 16’s competition and all

players displayed great sportsmanship and school

spirit throughout the day.

The 16’s team took to the court and the girls played

really well seeing they don’t all play together on the

weekends and some girls actually don’t play at all.

The team played 3 games, unfortunately didn’t get a

win but improved throughout the day. All games

were played with good spirit and sportsmanship.

There a few outstanding players including, in shooting,

Lilly Mitchell who played up an age group and did a

fantastic job, centre court Tegan Wood, who actually

played and umpired and in defence and Catherine

Nicholson who played outstanding in all games.

In first game, the Under 14 year girls came

up against Orange Anglican Grammar

School. From the very beginning, Canobolas

showed their skill level and connected as a

team. It was a very close game, with the

ball going up and down the court but the

girls never gave up. The girls fought to the

end, walking away with a 1 point win. The

team didn’t have a break all day, which

was tough. The girls came across some

pretty neat competitors but always tried

their best and improved throughout the

day. Well done to all the girls who played

but a special mention to shooter Chloe

Jones for her commitment in the shooting

circle, Montanna McIlwain-Browne who ran

all day in the centre position, showing great

skill and to Teagan Masila for never giving

up down the defence end.

PDHPE Assessment Reminders

Many of the PDHPE classes across the years are currently working on assessable items both in class and at

home. A reminder that if your child does not complete an assessment task and hand it in on time for

marking, it will affect the overall grade they are awarded for PDHPE. This grade also has a practical effort,

attitude and participation mark for lessons where students participate in practical games, sports and

various physical activities. Please note that this component of the course is compulsory and students may

only be excused from these classes with a medical note during the time of injury recovery.

School sport representative shorts $40 and socks $10 are available for purchase for through the school

office and PDHPE. Payments can also be made online.

Calling for applicants for the

Canobolas High Performance Athletes (CHPA) program

Year 7 2018

Designed to holistically support and develop students who excel

in sports, dance or athletic domains. Students who apply for a

CHPA program placement must be able to demonstrate pre-

elite representative ability (higher than club or school level) in

particular sport/s and demonstrate positive attitudes, highly

developed work habits, and respectful and responsible

behaviour.

STEM CENTRE NEWS Year 7 STEM – Sphero’s Cage

Following the visit to Dubbo Zoo last term, Year 7 STEM students were asked to reflect upon the

Rhino exhibit and the type of enclosure used to keep the animals contained. Students working in

teams were tasked with designing, creating and testing an enclosure for an out of control

Sphero robot, inspired by the Rhino enclosure. Here are some photos of 7STE2 and their designs.

HISTORY OF ORANGE DVD This DVD has been generously donated to our school. It contains lots of information about Orange and the surrounding districts. Included in the DVD is:

Early history of the district, agricultural, mining and manufacturing history, Wiradjuri history, biographies of early settlers and well known local identities, heritage studies, scanned copies of many local history books, scanned copies of foundation stones and significant graveyard headstones, CWD negative collection index, sketchbooks of significant landmarks, tourist brochures, musical society history and programs.

This is a great resource for any student studying the local history of Orange.
