Manawatu: Some early plantings have commenced in the Rangitikei, and depending on the weather will commence in the Palmerston North area this week. The grain area is expected to be similar to last season, but it is still too early to know what the silage area might be.  Wairarapa: Too early as yet for much action.  Canterbury: Soil temperatures are still cold but planting will commence shortly.  Upcoming events We plan to hold some in field discussion meetings in November, particularly in the Waikato, BOP and Northland areas. Dates and locations will be announced in later maize Actions and mail outs.  Interesting Snippet Uneven emergence in corn  If soil conditions are not ideal at planting, corn (maize) may emerge unevenly. You might eventually get a full stand, but competition from the larger, early‐emerging plants will decrease the yield of smaller, late‐emerging plants. A two year study conducted by the University of Wisconsin and Illinois researchers examined delayed emergence on grain yield. They used combinations of within‐row of sowing times, with ¼, 1/2, and ¾ of plants delayed for 1.5 or 3 weeks after sowing time. Yields decreased from 6‐10% for all treatments. The full article can be seen at  http://learningstore.uwex.edu/pdf/NCR344.pdf
