Friday 8 December 2017 Last Wednesday (29 November) Old Emanuel, documentarian and journalist Phil Cox returned to school to give a compelling talk and workshop about filmmaking. Students from Emanuel and a small group of sixth formers from Grey Coat Hospital School were given an invaluable insight into his award- winning filmmaking technique. Phil completed an honours degree in languages and literature at the University of Edinburgh and went on to launch Native Voice Films in 1998. For the last 15 years he has worked both as a director and producer of award- winning broadcast TV and indie features, for channels such as Channel 4. He was awarded the Rory Peck Award for his journalism work covering conflict in the Sudan civil war and has since been nominated for seven other international awards. At the heart of Phil’s work is the idea of inspiring, motivating and persuading others through good storytelling. During the talk students learnt about the intricacies of the craft and how tools such as animation, sound and creative editing can be used to capture and move an audience. He showed a range of clips from his documentary films including, The Bengali Detective (winner of a Grierson Award) and one of his most recent films Captured in Sudan. Following the talk, Phil accompanied members of the Senior Media Club to the film studio, where Sam interviewed him for the first episode of ‘OE Focus’, which will be available soon. He shared his memories of being a pupil at Emanuel and his journey into filmmaking and journalism. He was incredibly impressed with the film studio and encouraged the students to take full advantage of all the exciting creative opportunities during their time at Emanuel. Last Wednesday (29 November) Old Emanuel, documentarian and journalist Phil Cox returned to school to give a compelling talk and workshop about filmmaking. Students from Emanuel and a small group of sixth formers from Grey Coat Hospital School were given an invaluable insight into his award-winning filmmaking technique. Phil completed an honours degree in languages and literature at the University of Edinburgh and went on to launch Native Voice Films in 1998. For the last 15 years he has worked both as a director and producer of award-winning broadcast TV and indie features, for channels such as Channel 4. He was

awarded the Rory Peck Award for his journalism work covering conflict in the Sudan civil war and has since been nominated for seven other international awards.

It’s been a successful week for our netballers, winnning gold medals across a number of tournaments. Read on for the match reports...

Congratulations to our 1st VII (in action above) who won the annual Harrodian Tournament last Wednesday. Catherine reports on a fine win: We have history of very good results at this tournament, so the pressure was on to deliver. It started with a convincing victory over Godolphin and Latymer, dominating throughout and winning by two goals. We continued our fine form throughout the rest of the tournament, only going down by one to KCS. We progressed to the semi-final against Highgate, a strong rival of ours. We beat them by three goals after coming from behind. We met our rivals Surbiton in the final, keen for revenge after an unfortunate defeat earlier in the week. We fought well, playing fast yet composed netball, coming from behind to take the match into extra time. After this period of added time, the game was drawn and so with fading light the organisers called the game at a 10-10 draw. For the third successive year we

had come away with the gold medal - a very good result for a young U19 squad. Thanks to Miss Yeomans for her support and to the parents who braved the cold weather to cheer us on.

Many congratulations also to our U14 team who won the Harrodian Tournament for their age category. Rosie reports: This was a great end to the season - gold medals! In our pool we beat every team we played including Ibstock, Gdolphin, Francis Holland and Tiffin. We came first in our pool, meaning we went through to the semis. We played Surbiton, who have beaten us already this season, but this time we won 9-7. In the final we played Notting Hill, winning 10-8. Lola made some great interceptions and Libby scored some outstanding shots. Willa tipped and intercepted the ball many times. This was our first gold medal of the season and we are all over the moon.

A very well done to the U12A side who won the Thomas’s Clapham Tournament. Lily writes: We lost our first match against Broomwood Hall, who were a challenging rival. We made a strong comeback, beating Streatham and Clapham, Thomas’s, and Francis Holland. We finished with a tough match in the final against Harrodian. It was a very close game but we came out on top to win gold. Special mention to Lucy-Rose who played extremely well. Our team play was excellent and we were proud to win the tournament.

Gold galore for Emanuel netballers

38 year 10 Latin and Classical Civilisation students recently visited the Roman town of Bath (Aquae Sulis) as a part of their GCSE course. It was a perfect day with the sun shining brightly as we walked around the Roman Baths, exploring such rooms as the caldarium (hot room) and the frigidarium (cold plunge bath). We marvelled at the main bath where we witnessed the mysterious hot springs in action; we gazed awestruck at the golden head of Sulis Minerva and recoiled at the spell-invoking defixiones (curse-tablets). We had some spare time to explore the rest of this beautiful city with its rich history of kings, architects and writers. We went on a walking tour past Pulteney Bridge (with its shops on either side) then Bath Rugby Club and up to the Assembly Rooms as featured in the novels of Jane Austen. Our tour culminated at Beau Nash’s Royal Crescent and the Circus. In addition to our cultural odyssey, we also got to experience the simply magnificent and magical Christmas market before making the short journey back to Emanuel. My thanks to Mr Ford and Miss Watson for assisting on the trip and ensuring that everything ran smoothly. My thanks also to the students, who were, once again, a credit to the school. PSA

The Tatler Schools Social Editors scheme explores the social lives of sixth formers from the eyes of a student. In representing Emanuel in the project, Iona’s role is to cover the ‘glamorous’ side of the social life at school, whether it be cat walks or charity balls. Her role also involves putting forward student suggestions for topics to be featured in Teen Tatler. If anyone has any suggestions, please do not hesitate to email her on [email protected]

The Computer Club team has temporarily disassembled the school robot in order to make a fresh round of upgrades on it. The Lego EV3 brick, which controls the robot's movements, will be completely reprogrammed and the Arduino Uno system, which controls its sound and lights, will be totally rewired as well. Any students interested in this project should visit us in Computer Club.

This week’s cake winners

This week’s Emanuel cake was awarded to George, Anna, Luke and Siddiq (along with Mr Leadbetter) for their fantastic victory against Alleyn’s School in the final group stage match of the Hans Woyda Mathematics Competition. This vintage group of enthu-siastic and hard-working mathematicians were worthy winners. AJL

Very many congratulations to the 82 members of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme who successfully completed their Bronze award and who received their Bronze certificates at the DOE presentation evening on Monday (4 December). Even more congratulations to the 32 recipients of their Silver award certificates. It was great to see the videos put together by the teams and this is an area to develop further – why not make a video interview with your colleagues on what they most enjoyed about the

award? There will be a prize for the best contribution and a good video would be very helpful for your expedition report on eDOE. The DofE Award at Emanuel is in full swing with 115 pupils now signed up to Bronze DofE and a record number soon to be enrolled on to the Silver level. You should aim to finish your Bronze before beginning your Silver. Bronze participants in year 9 have been busy getting all three activities 'approved' on their eDofE accounts this term, and Year

10s have been busy finishing off their Bronze Awards in order to gain Silver level accounts. The spring term hails the start of expedition training and practice weekends. All dates are up on eDofE and make sure you keep an eye on your school emails where all notices will be sent. Any queries about Silver should go to Laura Holden ([email protected]), and about Bronze to Mr Keddie ([email protected]).

On Monday 11 December at 5pm, 50 members of the choir will be singing Choral Evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral. Do come and support the choir, singing Bairstow’s Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, Psalm 105, Rose responses, and Handel’s And the Glory of the Lord from the Messiah, in what promises to be a special occasion in a fantastic and iconic building. The Evensong is free to attend, although donations to St Paul’s will be welcome I am sure. If you are intending to come along to support, the congregation is asked to be seated no later than 4.30pm. I very much hope to see lots of people there. TWR

The Junior Quiz Club now takes a break until our next event is on the horizon and in its place the Junior Literacy Society returns with a couple of meetings before Christmas. Last Monday the group designed a huge ‘Horror Road Map’ of scary novels they had read and enjoyed, organising and interconnecting the books by genre on our huge chart which was coincidently shaped like an upside-down Christmas tree. Lots of great books were suggested and it was wonderful to see the children photographing the map to check out books they had not read, to read at a future date. Next Monday 11 December the Society meet again for our Christmas themed retelling of The Winter Wolf which is a rather obscure (but wonderful) picture book, which will be followed by a discussion on this beautiful 22-page story. The Junior Literacy Society meets at 1.45pm in the Magazine Room of the Library for pupils in Years 6-8, please encourage your child to attend, even if they have never attended before. TRJ

Wednesday saw the first round of our latest Blitz Chess Competition with 18 pupils entering, all chasing the lovely £30 cash prize. Blitz matches are played over a very fast 10 minutes with digital clocks, so the players need to think very fast. Tom is defending champion, however, there are plenty dangerous entrants around looking to gain his crown. We had a surprise entry from Emanuel’s new IT director Sylvia Chidi, who looks a serious player. The competition is played over six successive days and we hope to announce the winners in the next newsletter. TRJ

On Tuesday the Geography Department welcomed AJ Owens from Queen Mary’s University to talk to the Geography A Level students about the ‘Hipsterfication’ of East London. It was an insightful talk discussing the layers of change a place can undergo and also the very topical issue of change in areas of London (e.g rise in house prices). He was an engaging speaker and provided the students with an excellent foundation to explore more. HVC

SPORTU15B v SHIPLAKE SCHOOLFINAL SCORE: 55-0 (WIN)After their professional pre match warm up, we thought we would be in for a tight encounter. We burst out of the blocks straight from kick off, hurling ourselves at the opposition. Patrick took it upon himself to take on the opposition single handed, picking and going at every opportunity. Tom was everywhere, evading tackles and setting up a beautiful try for Nat to finish off. Gabriel made the wing his own personal samba studio and danced past the opposition with grace scoring a beauty from the half way line. Shiplake were reeling, and we went for the jugular. Gabriel was putting in a masterclass at second row, having taken a break from the hustle and bustle of rowing life and Rigby once again showed the physicality to rattle the opposition. Rocco may have stolen the moment of the match by picking the ball up from our own dead ball zone, evading two ferocious challenges and running the ball to safety. The Bs emerged with a 55-0 victory, in part due to Fred’s unerring kicking, reminiscent of a Jonny Wilkinson at his peak. HMN

1ST XV v SHIPLAKE COLLEGEFINAL SCORE: 19-10 (LOSS)Last Friday (1 December) Rosslyn Park FC hosted our third Friday Night Lights fixture of the season. Taking on Shiplake College on a cold December evening, 23 players represented the school. The match was superbly promoted with Max’s father kindly providing large digital advertising boards that line the upper Richmond Road for the rush hour traffic and passers by to see. For the players it was a first chance to play on a synthetic surface. It would ensure a fast pace to the game and test both teams’ fitness at this late stage in the season. The match started at a frantic speed with Emanuel losing pivotal player George in the first minute of play. George was replaced by Tom who came on and had an outstanding first half. A try from Sam and five points from the boot for Gabriel put Emanuel 10 points clear at half time. The start of the second half saw Shiplake throw caution to the wind and throw the ball around to trouble our defence. They scored 19 unanswered points in the second half. Emanuel continued to apply pressure and gain territory but failed to convert opportunities. A late surge from Emanuel saw a try disallowed by the referee under the posts which would’ve surely narrowed the gap to just two points. Kylan was named man of the match for his outstanding defensive display and his aggressive carrying. The team have two fixtures remaining - St Paul’s and Sutton Valence. SDG

U15 v SHIPLAKE COLLEGE FINAL SCORE: 36-12 (WIN)BY MONTYWe arrived a Blagdons looking for our third win in a row after strong performances against Latimer and Colfe's. The first half started well, with Charlie taking the ball from the base of a scrum

and crashing over within five minutes. Shiplake regrouped and scored two tries for their efforts with 10 minutes of the half left. Emanuel came close to an equaliser when a try from Benny was disallowed as a knock-on on the line, but strong running and two tries from Jay left the score 15-12 at half time. With a second half downhill advantage, we were sure we could put the game to bed. The half started as well as the first with Charlie smashing through defences and scoring another two breakaway tries. Emanuel also kept a strong defence, with Joe and Benny making constant tackles and barring any attack from Shiplake. The game was sealed when Jay ran the ball wide and clattered through three defenders to score in the corner, leaving the score at full time 36-12 to Emanuel.

U15B v COLFE’S SCHOOLFINAL SCORE 43-7 (WIN)The last two weeks have been fruitful for the U15B army, with three convincing wins. Colfe’s School came to visit last Thursday but couldn’t handle the ferocity of our back row’s ball carrying. Rigby and Jude stood out as opposition players just seemed to bounce off their powerful frames. A final score of 43-7 flattered the visitors who were glad to see the back of Matthew who was at every ruck, out muscling his counterparts. HMN

U15B v LATYMERFINAL SCORE: 50-31 (WIN)Last Saturday we travelled north to play Latymer on a crisp morning. We had a bare 15 warriors because of injury and made a barnstorming start to the game, taking an early 17-0 lead. Charlie asserted himself in the game, and our scrum half-come-wing wizard Fred was putting on a show. We lost influential centre Felix to a knock and Fran to the A team. Latymer hauled themselves to 17-17 at half time and the U15B coach could feel his side throwing it away. Our mighty Bs were jolted into action and Sam drove the team on with sheer force of will, making

tackle after tackle and Peter played like a man possessed. Phil displayed the composure of an ancient Greek stoic philosopher, getting us out of trouble on numerous occasions. HMN

CHRISTMAS PUDDING RACES: Please join us at the Boat House for the annual Christmas pudding races on Saturday 16 December. There will be mulled wine, tea, coffee and mince pie to keep you warm. If you enjoyed the delicious carved angel Christmas puddings last year, we will be selling them again alongside the wonderful Godminster cheeses. Both perfect as a gift for a host, or to indulge yourself!

U14A v SHIPLAKE COLLEGEFINAL SCORE: 29-21 (WIN)BY DAFYDDFollowing our first win of the season the previous weekend, the team’s confidence was high as we lined up before our game against Shiplake. However, we soon got a reality check when Shiplake scored an early first try. That was when we realised that we needed to work hard if we were going to win and soon afterwards Anthony scored our first try. We followed up with some big tackles and at the end of the half, Josh scored to put Emanuel ahead. The second half began with a fantastic try, as Luke put in a beautiful chip over the defensive line, which was picked up by Anthony to score his second of the match. In quick succession, Anthony scored his hat trick. Despite a spirited comeback effort from Shiplake - scoring two more tries - Emanuel came through to win their second victory of the season. The team is now looking forward to the challenge of playing St Paul’s.

Rugby

U15B v ST DUNSTAN’S U15AFINAL SCORE: 38-28 (WIN)BY JOSIEIt was freezing cold outside but luckily we played inside, meaning the ground wasn’t so slippery. At the end of the first quarter the score was 7-11 to St Dunstan’s. In the second quarter we dug deep and not only caught up, but scored a whopping 13 goals compared to St Dunstan’s 5. This shows how intense and fast paced the game was since the quarters are only 12 minutes long. The remainder of the game continued in this fashion with Esme, Lara and Emily scoring. Anna and Edie played extremely well in the defensive circle, getting tip after tip, which prevented the opposition from shooting. Grace, Leah, Josie and Scarlett worked together in the centre court getting the ball down to the shooters. Scarlett played especially well and got player of the match. We look forward to our final game of the season next week against JAGs.

Netball

U14A v HIGHGATE SCHOOLFINAL SCORE: 37-26 (WIN)BY ROSIE VAN DER VLIETIt was a tight match. Ginevra scored some amazing shots and Libby was player of the match for her great movement and shooting. In defence Neve stayed with her player, winning the ball many times. It was a great win.

U12A: HARRODIAN TOURNAMENT (SECOND PLACE)BY LILYA very positive start put us at the top of Pool A, having won all of our matches. A tough match against Highgate in the semi-final saw us through to the final against Godolphin and Latymer. We fought hard but they were too strong and we finished in second place to take the silver medals. Overall, we were very pleased with the result.

U12B v BROOMWOOD HALL FINAL SCORE: 14-2 (WIN)BY MILLIEIn the first quarter we scored the majority of our goals and intercepted many passes. However, in the second two quarters we slowed down and didn't chase the ball as much. Broomwood chose Millie as player of the match. Well done to all the girls that played - it was a great match and win

U12B v ST DUNSTANS FINAL SCORE: 5-3 (WIN)BY MILLIEIt was a great match and the girls all showed great desire. We chased every ball and tried to intercept every pass. This did mean, however, that we sometimes chased the ball too much and forgot to mark the opposition player as much as we should have. St Dunstans chose Millie as player of the match.

U12C v BROOMWOOD HALLFINAL SCORE: 13-0 (WIN)BY ISLAHaving lost our previous matches, we improved massively by scoring more goals, intercepting the ball more and finding an area to capture the ball. Player of the match was Lily playing at GS/GA. Lily was very alert, always in a space ready to receive any pass and her shooting

U12D v ST DUNSTAN’S COLLEGEFINAL SCORE: 12-0 (WIN)BY DANIELADespite the freezing cold making it hard to grip the ball we still managed to work well and score 12 goals. Player of the match was Cara for her amazing shooting.

U12C v ST DUNSTAN’S COLLEGEFINAL SCORE: 13-0 (WIN)BY ISLAWe defended well and were very alert. However, we could have done less footwork and contact. Players of the match were Libby and Jess, who worked well together with their passing and shooting. Francesca did very well defending and intercepting the ball.

U12E v ST DUNSTAN’S FINAL SCORE: 11-0 (WIN)BY FLEUR WIRASINHAIt was a physical match and we defended well. Our two best defenders were Izzie and Sophie. We were strong in the first quarter, scoring six goals by Sophia L and Sophie W. We kept playing with confidence and our best attackers were Isabel and Fleur. Player of the match was Sophia L.

U12F v ST DUNSTAN’S FINAL SCORE: 29-0 (WIN)BY CHARLIEWe weren’t sure what to expect as it was the first time we had played together as a team. We started strongly scoring many of our goals in the first quarter. Our momentum continued until the last quarter when we switched positions - many of us were out of our comfort zone. Apart from that, we worked well together to move the ball up the court quickly. We did rush sometimes and lost the ball unnecessarily. Elisa was outstanding and shot the majority of our goals. We learned a lot and look forward to playing another match.

was accurate. Sara at WD was also very defensive, intercepting the ball from the opposition and getting into space.
